Dropbox Kills Mail, Photo Apps

Dropbox, the popular cloud storage service is making a major course correction and dropping two services it rolled out with a lot of fanfare.

Dropbox hoped to boost its number of users by adding two apps to its services: Mailbox, for managing your e-mail, and Carousel, an app for managing your photos in the cloud.

dropbox feature

Mailbox was a very well-reviewed app, and so popular at first that you needed reservation to use it. It featured mobile-friendly options like swiping to delete messages and allowing you to put a snooze on messages you wanted to get back to later.

But many other mobile apps added similar features and Mailbox wasn’t able to keep up the momentum. Mailbox will shut down on February 26, 2016.  Your e-mail will still be available in your e-mail account. However, any drafts in your mailbox will be deleted. Users will need to manually delete the app from their phones and tablets.

Carousel wasn’t quite as big a hit as mailbox with reviewers, and apparently not so popular with users. In a statement on the Carousel blog, the developers said, “Over the past year and a half, we’ve learned the vast majority of our users prefer the convenience and simplicity of interacting with their photos directly inside of Dropbox. With this in mind, we’ve had to make a difficult decision.”

Many Carousel users expressed disappointment, saying the app was the only reason they’d upgraded to paid Dropbox services.

The photos stored in Dropbox cloud storage will not be affected and Dropbox says they plan on adding some of the features of Carousel into the main DropBox app.  Carousel will shut down on March 31, 2016.

Dropbox says it wants to focus on collaboration instead of offering its own apps. The core Dropbox cloud storage service won’t be affected by these changes.
