I would like to sell some things on Ebay, but I’m not sure how to present myself. Do you have any suggestions?
That is a very interesting question and it’s one we haven’t touched much on before at all. I know Ebay is a very popular thing these days and it seems like everyone you talk to has sold or bought something from the Web site at one point or another. If you go to Ebay’s Web site to sell something, they have very detailed step by step instructions on how to start and complete the process, but what about presenting yourself? You want to look good to any potential buyers, so how can you get your point across in a polite manner? Keep reading for some tips.
When looking to buy something on Ebay, buyers look for products that are well defined, have detailed information about them, look good, have a fair price, etc. So, that’s what you want to focus on. Make sure your sales pitch relates to something you would consider if you were in the buyer’s shoes. The main things you may want to focus on are the payment methods, the shipping methods and the packaging. You want all of those to be convenient for both yourself and the buyer.
Payment - The most popular way to accept payment is probably through a PayPal account. It is the easiest way to get payment from people and it’s the fastest transaction you can do. You receive the money quickly and you can therefore, send the item out faster as well. When you sign up for an account, make sure you get verified, because buyers will see that as a reliable source. You can of course accept credit card payments and checks by mail. Just be careful with either of these payment options. If for some reason a credit card is maxed out or a check is bad, you may get stuck with overcharge fees in the end. Also, checks or money orders take longer to process and it will take longer for the item to be shipped and received. You always want to try and make the transaction as fast as possible for both you and the buyer.
Shipping - When weighing an item for a shipping price, you’ll want to be as accurate as possible. It’s smart to maybe have a shipping scale to use, especially if you are going to be selling several items. You should also familiarize yourself with the different shipping plans that Ebay offers. You can send it by regular mail, Priority, etc. Choose one that will be a fair price for yourself and the buyer. If you tack on a huge shipping charge to an item, buyers may stray away from your item and look elsewhere. You also want to be fair to yourself and charge enough to the customer to cover the actual shipping costs that you’ll have to handle. This is where the accuracy in weight and the different shipping options come into play.
Some people on Ebay like to make extra money by jacking up the shipping cost, but if you think about it, that’s not really fair. Always be honest in what you’re selling and you will gain respect back.
Packaging - You should always be prepared and have several shipping boxes, labels, tape, etc. handy for whenever you sell an item on Ebay. If you sell multiple things at once, you never know when a sale will go through, so you should always have enough supplies to handle it all. If you have a lot of different sized items, be sure you have the right boxes, etc. for all of them as well. Once again, the type of packaging you use plays a hand in the shipping cost. Make sure you use the appropriate sizes and don’t cheat yourself out of any money by having to pay for a little extra weight on a box.
Okay, now that we’ve talked about how you should handle the money aspect of selling on Ebay, let’s discuss a little about the “look” value. When entering your item on Ebay, you should make it look and sound as good as possible, obviously. The better it sounds, the more people will be interested in buying it. For your description, highlight the good aspects with a positive energy. People will be able to sense how you feel about the product you’re selling. If you describe it in a boring way, buyers will pass you by. It’s also a good idea to use photos with your description. Buyers always like to see what they’re getting, so be truthful and put a real picture of the item there. It’s said that people are more likely to buy an item with a picture than without. That will help your selling efforts by quite a bit!
Ebay also lets you change some colors of your text and bold print the text. You should do that if you’re willing to pay the extra service charge. Create something that will catch a buyer’s eye and something that will make them want to start bidding on your item right away. And that’s the whole point, right?
If you follow these tips, you won’t have any trouble selling your items, because you’re being fair, eye catching and truthful and there’s nobody that doesn’t appreciate that!
