Edit and Customize Your Homepage

Are you ready for another FrontPage lesson? I sure hope so, because today, we’re going to talk about editing and customizing your homepage. So far, we’ve talked about the basics of getting your page started and about creating and changing the templates within your site.

By now, you probably have most of your homepage in the layout that you like and you may have some other things in place (such as headings, font, colors, etc). If you’re beyond that, you’re doing a great job! Okay, here we go.

First, we’re going to talk about changing your page banner. The page banner is the main heading at the top of your homepage. For example, you may want to name your banner “My Web Site” or maybe “My Family.” Whatever it may be, here’s how you can do some editing and customizing with it.

1.) Right click on your page banner and from the menu that comes up, choose Page Banner Properties.

2.) Type in the words that you want displayed in your page banner and click OK. The banner is now changed to what you have specified. If you ever want to change it to something else, you can always do that as well.

3.) Now, we’re going to talk about some customizations you can make. To help simplify the process of getting your site to look the way you want, it may be easier to delete some of the tables. They may be in your way and it might be easier for you if they’re gone. If you want to keep them, feel free to do that as well. To delete a table, just highlight it, right click and select Delete or Cut. This will remove them from your page.

4.) I also decided to remove the date and counter that is located on the left side pane. You really don’t have any use for it, but if you like it, you can surely keep it. To get rid of it, highlight it, right click and select Delete.

Once you have those two things done, you have a more simplified page and you’re probably better able to see what your layout is going to end up like. You can now personalize this page by adding your own personal content (text, photos, etc).

5.) Before you go any further, you can use the preview button to see how your homepage looks. It will give you a view of how your page will look as an actual Internet Web site. This is a really cool feature, so you can see what everyone else will see when you’re all done.

At this point, you can change your template again if you’ve decided you like a different one. You can change your banner again, change fonts, colors or anything else. It’s good to get all of those things done before you start adding more items onto your page. Once you have all the beginning items set the way you want, click OK and then Save.

Keep in mind that you can go back and change things at any time while you’re working on your site. Also, don’t forget to frequently save your work, so you won’t lose any of it or lose any time. Keep an eye out for a few more FrontPage tutorials coming soon!

Note: I am using Windows XP, so if you are working with FrontPage on an older version of Windows, things may just look a little different to you than what you see in my screenshots. It’s nothing to worry about though!
