Email Read Receipts

Alright, your first question probably is “What is a read receipt anyway?” Well, you can request a read receipt when you send an e-mail. When the receiver of your e-mail opens it you will be sent a message telling you it has been read (at their option). This message is the read receipt.

Your next question might be “How do I send a read receipt?”

Outlook Express

There are two ways to do this using Outlook Express. The first way I will show you will request a read receipt for every message you send (this is not usually necessary). The second way will allow you to request a read receipt for an individual message.

Open Outlook Express and sign in if necessary. Once everything has loaded, click ” Tools ” on the main tool bar. In the drop down menu that opens click on ” Options ” (it’s near the bottom of the list). This will open a new window where you can change a ton of things in Outlook Express.

We want to be in the ” Receipts ” area so click that tab. The first checkbox will allow you to request read receipts for all messages. Some of the other ones might be of interest as well. In the middle is an area for sending read receipts. If you check the box to never send a read receipt then if anyone requests one from you they will not receive one even if you have read the message. I would recommend checking the middle box so that you will be asked to send the read receipt whenever one is requested.

After you have the “Request a read receipt for all sent messages” box checked you can click ” OK “. Now, every message you send will send you a message when the recipient has opened your message. But remember, if you can block the read receipts, so can the person receiving your e-mail.

To request a read receipt for only one e-mail you must first start the message. Click ” Create Mail ” or open a new message in some other way. Then click on Tools and click ” Request read receipt ” so that it is checked. Easy enough.

Netscape Mail

Open Netscape Mail and sign in if necessary. Once everything has loaded, click ” Edit ” on the main tool bar. In the drop down menu that opens click on ” Preferences ” (it’s at the bottom of the list). This will open a new window where you can change a ton of things in Netscape Mail.

We want to be in the ” Mail and Newsgroups ” area so click the arrow to expand the menu. Click ” Return Receipts ” and you will see several options.

At the top you want to check the box that says, “When sending messages, always request a return receipt”. This will allow you to request read receipts for all messages, and you can direct where you want the receipt to go (In Box or Sent Mail box). Some of the other ones might be of interest as well. If you check the box to never send a read receipt then if anyone requests one from you they will not receive one even if you have read the message.

After you have the “…Request a return receipt” box checked you can click ” OK “. Now, every message you send will send you a message when the recipient has opened your message. But remember, if you can block the read receipts, so can the person receiving your e-mail.

To request a read receipt for only one e-mail you must first start the message. Click ” Compose ” or open a new message in some other way. Then click on Options and click ” Return receipt “. That’s all there is to it.

This is nice for several things. First, if you are sending an important e-mail you want to make sure it is received. Also you can have fun seeing how long it takes people to write back to you after they have read your message.
