MS Excel: Format Cells Dialog Box

MS Excel: Finding a Long Lost Friend… the Format Cells Dialog Box

Let’s be honest, there are times when faced with the Ribbon and all its tabs, groups and buttons, that we miss our old friend the Format Cells dialog box.

It was our “one-stop” formatting source.

From within that one dialog box, we could find the options for fonts, cell borders & shading, alignment within the cells, text direction as well as the biggie… the actual formatting type for the cell data.

Don’t get me wrong, those things are available in the newest versions of Excel, but they are a bit spread out across the Ribbon leaving some people missing the Format Cells dialog box.

The truth of the matter is that the Format Cells dialog box still exists and you don’t have to miss your old friend any longer!

You can still access the Format Cells dialog box – it’s just not as obvious.

Let me suggest the following methods for opening the dialog box:

Ctrl + 1

Right-click on a cell (or select multiple cells before the right-click) and choose Format Cells from the list.

Use the dialog launcher arrow in the bottom right corner of the Font, Alignment or Number groups on the Home tab of the Ribbon.

Who knew that it could be that easy to say “Hello” to your old friend?

Who cares because now you know too!
