Exporting Your Google Reader Subscriptions To A New Service

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013 by | Filed Under: Using The Internet

Like many Google Reader users, you were likely shocked to see a notification that the entire service will be shut down on July 1st, 2013 when you recently logged in to check your latest news updates. So what should you do now to be prepared for the abrupt ending? It’s unfortunately time to transfer to a different RSS feed reading service, but you don’t have to lose all your current subscriptions in the process, or even manually re-subscribe to all of them. Instead, Google allows you to export your subscription data and then import it to a different program all at once.

To get started, log into Google Reader and click the “Settings” icon at the upper-right end of the screen (the box marked with a gear symbol), and then select the “Reader Settings” option.

Google Reader Settings

Open the “Import/Export” heading near the top of the screen to bring up a new list of options.

The Import/Export Screen

Click the link at the bottom of the screen labeled “Download your data through takeout.” Using the “Takeout” feature makes transferring your data a much quicker process than individually exporting all your subscriptions.

Google Takeout

Scroll down to the bottom of the window and click the red “Create Archive” button.

Creating An Archvie

Click the blue “Download” button at the left side of the window. You will also be prompted to re-enter your Google password as an extra security measure to prevent unauthorized users from downloading your subscription data without your permission.

Downloading The Archive

Navigate to your computer’s download folder and locate the zip you downloaded from Google Reader. Right-click the folder and select the “Extract All” option to extract the zip archive.

Extracting the Zip Folder

Return to your web browser and access your new RSS program. If you don’t already have an account, you’ll first need to sign up for one like you originally did with Google Reader. There are many cheap or even free RSS feed readers readily available online, such as The Old Reader or Feedly.

The option for uploading your subscription data will differ between different readers, but will usually be a button labeled “Import” on the top or side of the screen.

Importing Subscriptions

Click the “Choose File” button to open a window letting you select your subscriptions from Google Reader.

Choosing a File

Navigate to the folder you extracted earlier and open each sub-folder until you find a list of files. Double-click the XML file labeled “Subscriptions.”

Selecting Your Subscriptions

Click the “Import” button to transfer all your subscriptions from Google Reader to your new RSS feed and get on to reading your daily news!
