We’ve talked before about Facebook’s “other” message inbox. It’s a mysterious place where messages that Facebook isn’t sure you want to see go to hide, only to be discovered months later.
Now Facebook is replacing the “other” inbox with Message Requests. If someone tries to message you and they aren’t a friend or a friend of a friend, you’ll get a Message Request at the top of your inbox. You’ll have to option to ignore the request or to check it out. Anything Facebook flags as spam will be completely filtered out.
It will also now be possible for someone to attempt to contact you via messenger with only your name or your phone number. However, you have the choice as to whether or not you want to communicate with them.
