The Food and Drug Administration has okayed the use of a telemedicine robot in hospitals.

It’s called the RP-VITA, and manufacturers iRobot and InTouch Health promise that it will allow doctors to communicate with and treat patients from thousands of miles away. The robot uses sophisticated sensors to move around in busy medical situations without bumping into people or equipment. The physician controls the robot using an iPad.

The FDA says the RP-VITA can be used for monitoring patients before, during and after surgery, childbirth or during psychological and critical care assessments.
