Feedly – An Awesome Replacement For Google Reader

Saturday, April 6th, 2013 by | Filed Under: Cool Sites

I don’t know if you heard, but Google Reader (a feed reader) is being shut down this summer (July 1st).  I know I used it as a convenient way to follow my favorite blogs all in one place and I’m sad it’s going away. While I can’t stop it from going away, I can look for a better alternative.

As of right now, Feedly seems to be a good replacement for me, so I thought I’d share it with you as an alternative reader. I use Chrome to browse, so when I arrive at the site, there is a button that reads Get Feedly for Chrome, I clicked that and then clicked the Add button. It then whisks me off to proper. It came up with the same response in Internet Explorer and Firefox. However, if you want to learn more about Feedly before you take the plunge, just scroll down the main page and check out all the information they have to share with you about it and what you can do with it.

If you have Google Reader, you can connect Feedly to it and manage your feed from Feedly instead of Reader, a helpful step in making the switch from Reader to Feedly.

Your other option after Feedly is installed, is to click the Start button that will allow you to search for more things to follow. You can either use the search field to look for something specific, or you can browse one of the categories that pop up. The categories are Tech, News, Business, Gaming, Design, Photography,  Fashion, Cooking, Do It Yourself, Sports, Cinema, YouTube, Vimeo, and Etsy. ( Heavens to Betsy, I’m in trouble now that I know about the Etsy feed! ) You can also choose what language you want to search in from the bottom of the category area.

If you need help with Feedly, check out their Customer Feedback & Knowledge Base section. You can get there with the link I provided or by clicking Help on the page. I know the first thing I wanted to know was what I needed to do to make sure I migrated completely from Google Reader, the answer was waiting for me in the knowledge base. In theory, I won’t have to do anything now that I’ve connected to Google Reader through their interface. When Reader disappears everything should already have migrated without having to do anything else. The help section is an amazing resource for acclimatizing to this new reader, I highly recommend you spend some time in their knowledge database getting familiar with how everything works.

For me at least the July 1st Google Reader panic has been averted! Check it out today!

There is a glaring omission with Feedly. Nowhere is there any mention of compatability with IE outside a passing reference in the article. Feedly mentions nothing. I hope a lot of people are not getting themselves in a future bind when they come across things that do not work properly. I hope I missed something.

Nothing is mentioned about support for IE other than a passing reference in the article. Looking at the Feedly site brings no references at all to IE that I can see. Kind of mysterious considering the number of IE users.
