Q:
When I visit certain Web sites, I often get the error message of "Done, but with errors on page." What does that mean and is there anything I can do to fix it? Please help!

A:
Well, to begin, this error usually only shows up in Internet Explorer and it mainly has to do with JavaScript. If the Web site you're trying to view uses JavaScript, you may run into a script related error, which triggers the "Done, but with errors on page" message. It is usually generated by an error in the site's code and unless you have access to that code, you probably won't be able to fix the error yourself. Once the problem hits a Web site's code, only the developers of the site can get in and fix it. It looks like this, by the way:



However, when that error pops up, you should still be able to see most of the site. Just keep in mind that some of its parts may not function correctly. You might have a missing image or animation here or there, but most of the site should still be visible. Now, I know some of you may be worried about the error affecting your computer. You may be thinking that it's going to harm your PC. Well, I assure you it won't. The problem lies within that Web site only and there's no way it could damage your computer. Plus, if you go and visit other sites, you'll see that they load up just fine. And once the creators of the other site fix their code, that one will be viewable again as well.

In addition, if you're a Web site designer or editor yourself, you'll want to keep an eye on your site and make sure the "Done, but with errors on page" message doesn't pop up at any time. If it does, just go in and look through your source code. The problem usually comes from an improper syntax, an incomplete code or a script that is placed in the wrong HTML section. Just take a look at those things and you should be able to fix the error rather quickly. Then your site will be back up and running the way it should be.

As you can see, this error message isn't one to panic about. It's unfortunate that it happens, but there's not really anything you can do about it yourself. If there's any way you can contact the designer of the Web site, do so. They may not even know there's a problem, but if you tell them, I'm sure they'll get it fixed right away. Otherwise, you'll just have to sit tight and keep checking back until the problem is solved. Luckily, it's not an error message that can ruin your whole day. At least it shouldn't!

Navigation Shortcuts for MS Word: The Keyboard

Picture this: You're working on the ultimate document. I mean, it's a masterpiece! Too bad the masterpiece is also a nightmare though. It's easily the longest document you've ever edited and the navigation through all those pages is just a huge headache. (Not to mention the back and forth, back and forth between the keyboard and the mouse). I bet you're looking for some help, huh?!

Well, never fear. I'm here to save the day! While these shortcuts won't make your document shorter, they will help to ease the pain as you try to navigate through your work and hopefully, without the need for aspirin.

Today, let's begin with some basic keyboard shortcuts:

• Arrow keys = moves one space or line in the arrow direction.

• Ctrl + Left or Right arrow = moves the cursor one word left or right.

• Home = moves the cursor to the beginning of the current line.

• Ctrl + Home = moves the cursor to the top of the document.

• End = moves the cursor to the end of the current line.

• Ctrl + End = moves the cursor to the bottom of the document.

• Page Up = moves the cursor up the length of one screen.

• Page Down = moves the cursor down the length of one screen.

• Ctrl + Page Up = moves the cursor to the previous page in your document.

• Ctrl + Page Down = moves the cursor to the next page down in your document.

If you're mouse dependent, give these a try. I'm sure you'll find them to be a great aid in your quest to be even more efficient!

EULAlyzer

Have you ever downloaded or installed a new program and clicked on "I accept the agreement" without actually reading the license agreement? We all have.
Unfortunately, it seems that all a company has to do is mention somewhere in the impenetrable text of their EULA what they may be installing or collecting in the background to meet legal disclosure requirements.

Some agreements are honest enough to list in plain language what they are going to do.

“In order for us to keep this software free we will open advertisements while you surf the web. ……. I further understand that a search tool bar will be added to my web browser which will remain visible as long as the software is installed and agree that XXXXXX web page will become my default Home page…”

Because some software providers do not have our best interests in mind, this article will show you how to install and use a powerful free tool to help you spot potential problems like pop up ads, unwanted tool bars and personal information collection software before they are installed..

Section A

Step 1: Download EULAlyzer from the Javacool Software web site

Step 2: To start the download to your PC, click on the Save File button (Figure 2)

Step 3: Locate the file “eulalyzersetup20.exe” Double click on it to start the installation process. Click the “Run” Button. (Figure 4)

Now that you have the EULAlyzer program installed there are only a few steps to checking an agreement for potential problems.

Before you install a program, subscribe to a service, or join a new Web site you will be asked to accept a user agreement. The agreements may have several different names, to be thorough consider looking at all of them before clicking on I agree…..

Some of the possible names are:

- Privacy Policy:

( Please note: Sometimes they offer "Privacy Policy Highlights" and you must click a link in that screen to see the “Complete Privacy Policy”.)

- Terms & Conditions

- Advertising Policy

- Legal Notices

Step 1 - Open the EULAlyzer program and click on Analyze on the left hand side of the screen. (Figure 5)

Step 2 - Drag and drop the Crosshair icon onto the window displaying the text you would like analyzed. This method may not always work depending on how the agreement is displayed on your computer. The way you can make it work every time is to copy the text from the document and paste it into the box labeled “License Agreement To Analyze” and then Left click on the “Analyze” button. (Figure 6)

Step 3 - The program provides a tremendous amount of detail, you can drill down to each potential problem word or phrase. Or if you prefer you can look at the “Details” box for a brief summary and a “calculated interest level”.

The: “Flagged text” is broken down into several categories:

Left click on a category to display each phrase that fits that group

Left click on the green arrow to highlight the specific words or phrases that may be a problem.

The “Details:” box provides a summary of the analysis. (Figure 7)

“We collect personally identifiable information such as names, email addresses and demographic information such as age, gender and zip code. We also may collect your IP address, browser type, domain name, access times and referring Web site address. This information is collected both during registration on a site or in response to specific requests, for example when signing up for a newsletter, entering a sweepstakes or contest or answering a survey.”

“Information Posted on XXXXXXX Broadband Sites - By transmitting, uploading, posting or submitting any Information to XXXXXXX Broadband Sites you (a) declare such Information is not confidential, secret or proprietary information; (b) warrant that no other party has rights to the Information and that your transmission, posting, uploading or submission of the Information to XXXXXXX Broadband Sites does not violate any copyright or other laws; and (c) irrevocably grant XXXXXXX Broadband, a worldwide, royalty free, non-exclusive perpetual, worldwide license to use, display, perform, distribute, modify, reproduce and publish the Information in any form anywhere.”

While it can take some time to checkout these agreements, using the EULAlyzer program is much faster than reading each one and trying to analyze them by your self. I believe knowing about potential security leaks or annoying pop ups in advance is well worth the time invested.

Please note: While analyzing documents is a valuable practice. You should always have active and up to date Virus protection software and a Firewall running at all times.

Q:
In Windows Vista, I'm a little confused about the "gadgets" on the side of my desktop. What's the purpose of these and is there any way I can get rid of them? Please explain!

A:
When you install Vista on your computer, you will first see just a few of the gadgets Microsoft picked for you on the right hand side of your desktop. But, the good news is that you can change them and choose your own as you go along with the Vista experience. The gadgets you can choose from are: Calendar, Clock, Contacts, CPU Meter, Currency, Feed Headlines, Notes, Picture Puzzle, Slideshow, Stocks and Weather. They all do their own thing while being very helpful.

Just as an overview, I'm going to go over some of my favorites, but I think they will be popular among you all as well. If I don't cover one that you particularly like, you can always take this information and learn more about the others. The directions are pretty much the same for all of them. Here we go!

First up is the calendar. With this, you can see a full calendar for each month of the year. Of course, it will display the current month, but you can easily change it to see another month if you need to. You can also have it set to show you just the current day of the week, along with the date number. All you have to do is click the calendar once to change between the views.

Another of my favorites is the clock. This one is cool, because you can change the design of your clock to whatever you want it to be. There's a normal looking clock, a flower clock, a blue one, a red one and several others. You can even give your clock a name. I personally have the flower clock with my name written on it. I love it! To change the view of your clock, go to the clock gadget and click on the little wrench icon. With that, you can change whatever you want within any of the gadgets.

Another helpful gadget is the feed headlines. There are four different Microsoft feeds that you can choose from. There's Microsoft Feeds, Microsoft at Home, Microsoft at Work and MSNBC. You can either have a couple of them or all of them all at one time. Once you choose what you want, they will all be right there for you on your desktop. It doesn't get any more convenient than that! To pick your feeds, once again, just click on the wrench icon and make your selections. The slideshow gadget is also very cool. This one isn't really as necessary as some of the others might be, but it's neat to look at. If you pick this as one of your gadgets, you'll constantly have a picture slideshow on your desktop to view. Now, it won't fill up your whole desktop, but there's an array of beautiful pictures that will show up on your Vista sidebar. There's everything from flowers to animals and so on.

The last one I'm going to talk about is probably my most favorite out of all of them and it's the weather gadget. Yes, there are several other weather downloads you can get that will show the current weather conditions on your computer screen, but I like this one better. It's bigger and it shows you the temperature and the current conditions (sunny, cloudy, etc.) very clearly. For example, it's cloudy and 49 degrees in Toledo right now! To change the area you want to see the weather for, just click on the wrench icon and type your zip code or city and state in the search box. It will appear for you automatically and you'll never have to wonder about the weather again!

Okay, so those are just a few that really caught my eye right away. Like I said, there are several others to choose from and you can have at least up to five gadgets on your desktop at one time. You can interchange them every day if you want as well. To access all the gadgets, click on the plus sign (+) in the upper right hand corner of your desktop and click on the word Gadgets. Then, to select whichever one you'd like, just double click it and it will appear on your screen for you. Also, like I said before, to make any changes to any of the gadgets, just click on that little wrench icon and go to town. Here's an example of what your desktop may look like when you are all done.



There are also some gadgets that you can download from the Internet. To check those out, just click on the link that says "Get more gadgets online." You can search through all of the choices and customize your desktop just the way you want it. Now, if you want to get rid of all the gadgets, right click on the word Gadgets in the upper right hand corner and just choose Close Sidebar. That way, all of the gadgets will disappear and you will have your full desktop space back again.

You Call That A Superscript?

Ever use the trademark TM symbol in MS Word?

(FYI… you can insert it quickly using "(TM)" - AutoCorrect will switch it out for the superscript TM that we're looking to have.)

Anyway, back to business, my point is that when I've used this symbol I've always felt that even though it's in superscript form it's still too big.

If you felt that way then you may have looked for a solution. Most people I know would try making the font of the TM smaller. The problem with that "fix" is that the TM doesn't stay at the top of the character it is next to as it shrinks… instead it moves downward as the top of the new font size moves.

Definitely not what you were looking to accomplish.

Well, I have a suggestion that is easier and actually does what you're looking for it to do.

Highlight the TM symbol (which is already a superscript symbol) and superscript it again.

I know, I know, how can we superscript what already is superscripted?

Well, in this case we can because the TM is inserted as a symbol - not two superscripted characters of text. Technically the TM is not superscripted text at all so, you're definitely able to superscript it.



See the difference?

With that one quick trick you've managed to reduce the size of the TM while keeping it in its correct place.

Clear Type

Do you ever find that the characters on your screen are difficult to read. They are either not dark enough or a little fuzzy. So, is there anything you can do?

Indeed there is. There is a very simple process you can undertake so that the fonts on your screen are readable. And the best part? The price is free!

Browse over to the Microsoft site here and click on the ClearType Tuner PowerToy download to the right (see picture below).



Once it has downloaded, click on Setup and let Windows install it automatically for you.

The final installation screen looks like the screenshot below. Just make sure you tick the “Launch the program” box before you finish.



Thereafter, you will see this picture:



(You will notice there are two tabs at the top: Introduction and Advanced. We will stick with Introduction here and return to Advanced at the end of the article).

The first thing to do is make sure the box Turn on Clear Type is selected.

Then click on Start Wizard to walk you through the rest of the process.

This screen will then present itself:



Have a look at the two samples displayed there and click on the one that looks the nicest to you and then click Next.



And you will now see that you can fine tune that a little more with this screen where you have six choices. Again, choose the one you like best and click Next.



On this screen, you will see the final result previewed for you. If you like it, click Finished. If you don’t, click Back and select another option from the previous screen.

Basically, that’s it! Easy and free! It doesn't get any better than that!

Now, I did mention the Advanced tab on the earlier screen. You might want to look at this if you are still not happy with your finished results. This enables you to accomplish some even finer fine tuning.

Have a look at the screen that is revealed:



And you will see you have four actions you may like to take and those are:

Enable Font Smoothing - Use this to get rid of the jagged edges on fonts.

Apply all the settings to the defaults for new users or a new system - In other words, do you want to keep these changes for everyone who uses the computer and for any messages that Windows gives you?

Set Sample Font - Maybe the font that has been used to show you the options is not the one you regularly use. Well, you can change it here (click on the button to get the font selection) and select what you like.

Clear Type Contrast Settings - Anything you want between dark and light can be set here. Work your way to the "perfect" display for yourself.

So, as you can see, all you need is a couple of minutes to work and you will have your screen looking just as you want it to look with no problems anymore!

Convert old cassettes and LPs into MP3 or CD in a flash

Q: Is there a program out there that will convert my old cassette tapes or vinyl records to CD?

A: The short answer is yes. There is a program out there that will record cassette tapes or vinyl records to CD. Today, I will show you how. If you have the right software and the right cords, getting your cassettes and Vinyl onto your computer, then onto CDs, is a pretty easy task. Just follow the steps below and you will be on your way to bringing your audio into the 21st century!

What you need: To make the conversion, you will need a (free) audio recording program, a tape or record player and a cord to connect the device to your computer. Here's a breakdown:

1. Audacity. This is the program that will record your audio to your computer.

2. LAME-encoder. This is a file that will convert your audio to MP3.

3. A record player or cassette player. Hopefully you already have one of these.

4. A cord to connect the player to your computer. We have them available in our store. I'll provide links to them later on.

Let's get started.

OK. The first step is to install Audacity and LAME. Click here to download Audacity. After completing the download, run the file that you just downloaded. This will install the program. Next, download the LAME MP3 encoder by clicking here. After downloading this file, do the same thing. Run the file and click next through the steps.

Now that we have the software installed, we can look at connecting your tape player, or record player, to your computer.

Your player will have one of two types of outputs. You will either have a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, or RCA audio output jacks. (Pictures below).

  or  

If your device has RCA outputs (left image), you will need this cable to connect to your computer.

If your device has a 3.5mm jack (right image), you will need this cable to connect to your computer.

The other end of the cable will connect to the line in jack on your computer(image below).

So far, so good. Right?

Now that we have the software installed and the cassette/record player connected to the computer, let's record something!

Put a cassette or LP into your player. Get the player to the place where you want to start recording and pause or stop the player.

Now, let's stop messing with all this hardware and get the computer set up. First, go to your control panel and open your audio settings.

In XP, go to the audio tab and click "volume" under sound recording. Place a check next to "line in". If you don't see a "line in" option go to options and click advanced. Place a check next to "line in" there.

In Vista/7 go to the recording tab. find your line in, select it then choose "set default". Click on "properties", go to the levels tab and turn up the level to 80 or 100. (This varies depending on what you are recording so you may need to adjust this to get it right).

Now let's open Audacity. (screen shot below).

As you can see, Audacity is pretty much a more advanced sound recorder. To begin recording, press the play button on your record/cassette player then click the red "record" circle on audacity. You are now recording to your computer! When you are done, click stop on audacity and press stop on your player.

After recording, you can now export your audio as an MP3. Go to the file menu and click "Export as MP3". You can now choose the name of the file and save to wherever you want. You are done recording!

NOTE: The first time you export as MP3, you will see the warning below. Click yes, then navigate in the window to C:\program files\lame for audacity\lame_enc.dll and click OK. You will only get this warning once.

Now that you are done recording, you have your MP3 files on your computer. You can stop here if you want or you can burn them to CD. I know there has to be some “format freaks” out there like me. If something minor goes wrong with my PC, I format and re-install Windows. Although this might sound a little extreme, I just love that new installation feeling! Q:
Is there a way to print my Favorites?

A:
Yes and No. You don't have an option where you can right click your favorites and choose "Print" or anything like that, but there is a procedure whereby you can create a printable HTML document.

First we need to create the HTML list. With Internet Explorer go to File / Import and Export to bring up the "Import/Export Wizard". Check "Export to a File" and click Next.

In the next screen, select "Favorites" and click Next.

If your favorites are organized into folders you can choose to save all (that would be the top folder "Favorites", or just a specific folder.)



Now you're going to choose a place for the file to export to. Select the "Browse" button and save it to your desktop for easy finding.

Click "Export" and you're done with the first part.

Now, what to do with this file.

Browse to and double click your exported file. It will open up in Internet Explorer. Notice that it is just a page of names with clickable links. Don't panic, we can print the URLs—stay with me.

Go to File>Print and under the "Options" tab check the "Print table of links" box then OK.



Push the "Print" button and you'll have a list with addresses!

You can export a list of Firefox bookmarks too: Go to Bookmarks>Organize Bookmarks then Import and Backup. Choose a location and name (again, I suggest the desktop) then Save. The only trick here for printing is that you'll need to open the HTML file with Internet Explorer and print using the method above.

Where Did I File That Message?

Ever find yourself searching for a message from a specific sender?

How did that go?

Unless you actually sort saved messages into folders based on the sender you could have messages from a single person all over the place.

So… needless to say, when you go to search for a specific one the question becomes "Where did I put it?"

Or, you're finding yourself busy trying to run searches for keywords and it just gets to be quite a headache.

Therefore, today I offer an alternative to the aspirin you were considering for that headache.

MS Outlook has a handy little feature that will locate all messages from a single sender regardless of where you have them stored.

Sounds like a plan to me so let's take a look.

To make this as easy as possible, start by highlighting a message from the sender we seek.

Now we're off to the Tools menu.



In the Tools menu we need either Instant Search or Find (depends upon your version of Outlook… big surprise, I know) then we need to choose Messages from Sender.

An Advanced Find dialog box will open that is already busy populating the bottom portion with all the messages it can find from that sender.



At this point you only need to look through that list to locate the message you seek.

If you need to narrow it down some more then use the top portion of the Messages tab to refine your search.



At the top you'll find a field labeled "Search for word(s)" and just below that a drop-down list to choose where Outlook should look.

As you can see, my initial search came up with 779 Computer Tips messages from Steve and after doing a keyword search for Outlook in the body of the message I now have 294.

OK - so maybe that's not a great example since there are still so many but then again how many people send you that many messages? It has taken me years to save that many Computer Tips issues so a search for messages from anyone else would never yield that many to start with.

Chances are your initial search would never come up with this many so, obviously, a more refined search should give you even less.

At any rate, double-click on any message in the list to open it and when you've found what you need close the dialog box and go on with your day.

Hidden Drives

If you share your computer with other people, you know privacy and security are very important. Thankfully, Windows XP allows you to have different user accounts for all the people using the same computer. These accounts can be password protected, but passwords alone do not always provide the best security and privacy.

You can encrypt and protect your My Documents folder and other personal folders with NTFS security options, but a curious user can still see your folders, their size and name -even if he can’t access them.

An extra layer of protection is never a bad idea if you share your computer with other people and you have private data stored on it.

One way to keep curious people from spying on your protected files and folders is to hide all the drives on your computer and make them invisible in Windows Explorer and My Computer. A quick simple change to the Windows Registry will allow you to protect your drives from prying eyes.

This Registry change only works in Windows XP, Windows Vista and the new Windows 7 have a modified Registry structure that prohibits these kinds of changes.

NOTE: Worldstart advises contacting a professional before you go pokin' around in the registry. There's some sensitive stuff in there!

To change a Registry setting we must first open the Registry Editor.

Go to the Start Menu and click on the Run command, situated above the Turn off Computer button. Then type the command "regedit" in the Open box and click the OK button.



The Registry Editor will now open.

The setting we need to change is located in the Registry structure, at the following address: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer



You must first click the plus sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, to reveal Software.

Then click the plus sign, next to Software, to reveal Microsoft.

Next click the plus sign, next to Microsoft, to reveal Windows.

Now click the plus sign, next to Windows, to reveal CurrentVersion.

Then click the plus sign, next to CurrentVersion, to reveal Policies.

Finally click the plus sign, next to Policies, to reveal Explorer.

Left click on the Explorer key and then right click on an empty spot on the right side of the Registry Editor window.

Click New, and from the menu, select and click on DWORD Value.

Type NoDrives and press Enter from the keyboard.

Right click on the NoDrives value and from the menu select Modify.

In the dialog box, type 3ffffff (a 3 followed by six f’s) and click the OK button.

Now exit the Registry Editor by clicking File and then Exit from the menu.

The last step requires you restart the computer to make your drives invisible in Windows Explorer and My Computer.

Although your drives seem to be invisible, they are still there and can be accessed from within programs such as Microsoft Word.



If you wish to open an invisible drive in Windows Explorer, open My Computer and in the Address field type the path to the drive you want to access (for example C:\ ).



To make all your drives visible, open the Registry Editor. Follow the steps above to reach the Explorer key and right click on the NoDrives value. From the menu select Delete and click Yes when the confirmation box appears.

Restart your computer and all your drives will return to normal.

AxCrypt

For the longest time, I've been looking for a free program that would allow me to safely encrypt certain files on my computer. I have tried many different freeware options, but none were as secure or as easy to use as the program I'm going to show you today. It's called AxCrypt and it's bursting with magnificent features. Let's check it out, shall we?!

1.) If you want to begin encrypting or password protecting your files, you’ll get some good use out of AxCrypt. Here's the download link.

2.) Follow the setup instructions and after it has completed, exit out of the setup wizard.

3.) If you already have a folder with all of the files you want to encrypt, that’s great! If not, create a folder and then continue to step 4.

4.) Right click on the folder and scroll down to AxCrypt. Next, select Encrypt and a box will prompt you to enter and confirm a password.

Do that and then click OK.

5.) Now, open your folder and you'll notice that the icons have changed. Double click on one of the files and once again, you'll be asked for your password. The file will only open if the password is entered.

6.) While using a password to secure your files is a good idea, a key-file is even more secure. A key-file is a special text file containing a random string of characters, which is your key. The file is placed on a USB drive, which means the encrypted folder can only be opened if the USB drive is plugged in and AxCrypt is pointed to the correct key-file. If that sounds a little too complicated, don’t worry! It will all make sense once you're finished.

7.) So, go ahead and plug in your USB drive (flash drive) if you have one. You can also use a floppy disk if you'd like. Right click on your encrypted folder, click AxCrypt, then Make Key-File.

8.) Find the directory for your USB drive and click Save. Open the Encrypt dialogue box again and enter your password twice. Also, where it says Key-File, choose the one you just saved on your USB drive and click OK.

9.) Now, when you try to open a file in the encrypted folder, you will be prompted to select the key-file. Someone who doesn’t have access to your USB drive will not be able to open the files, even if they do know your password.

10.) You feel safer already, don’t you?! It’s good to know that all of your private documents can only be accessed if the USB drive is present. It’s very important for you to never accidentally delete the key-file. It’s actually a good idea to make a copy of it and keep it on another disk somewhere safe.

11.) Finally, I have one last feature to show you! Have you ever felt a little leery about deleting files with sensitive information? You wouldn’t want that information to reach the wrong hands, now would you? Luckily, AxCrypt contains a shredding feature that overwrites the deleted files with random information.

12.) If you want to “shred” a file, right click on it, choose AxCrypt and then select Shred and Delete. That's it!

One of my favorite features so far in Windows 7 is the ability to take a look at what's going on in the taskbar without actually having to click on or maximize anything. Want to know how? Great!

When you have programs present in the taksbar, just take your mouse pointer and hold it over the program you'd like to take a look at.



It's a mini-preview!

It comes in especially handy when you have multiple windows in a program group and you want to access something quickly.

Q:
I was looking around in my Add/Remove Programs area in the Control Panel and I found something on the side that said "Set Program Access and Defaults." What does this mean and should I even mess with it?

A:
You can use this feature to change the default programs you use for certain activities you do while on your computer. For example, such activities as simply surfing the Web, sending e-mails, playing CDs or using instant messaging programs.

Now, before I go into any more detail, I need to tell you that you must have Administrator rights to use this feature. Otherwise, you won't be able to change any of your default programs and that will just defeat the whole purpose of this tip. If you're not sure how to get Administrator rights, you can read this article for some help. Also, if you use a computer that is part of a network, you must be logged in as the Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to be able to do this. The same goes for those of you who use computers that are not part of a network. You still need to be signed in as the computer's Administrator in order to change the default program settings.

Okay, once you're all set with that, go to Start, All Programs and then find the choice that says "Set Program Access and Defaults." (You can also get there by going to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. On the left hand side, you'll see the choice for "Set Program Access and Defaults"). Once you're there, you have four options to choose from. They are:

1.) You can restore your program settings to what they were when established by the manufacturer of your computer. If you want to do that, click on the Computer Manufacturer choice. Now, this option is only available if the actual manufacturer put Service Pack 1 on your computer and set allowances for those settings. (If you're not sure on that, you may want to contact your manufacturer or look for some information about it in your computer's manual).

2.) If you want to set your program defaults to fit the needs of the activities you do on your computer (like the ones I mentioned above), click on the Microsoft Windows choice. With this option, you will be able to access both Microsoft and non-Microsoft programs from your Start menu, your desktop or any other location you may choose on your computer.

3.) Now, if you want to use non-Microsoft programs as your defaults, click the Non-Microsoft choice. You can then just select the options that you want. Now, keep in mind: This configuration does remove your available access to other specified Windows programs.

4.) The last choice is to combine the non-Microsoft and Microsoft Windows options. This one is under the name of Custom, so if you'd like to do this, click it. You can then select the options you want to set for your computer. By doing a custom setting, you can pretty much do a combination of all the above choices. That includes being able to access your programs from your Start menu, your desktop and any other location you choose.

Once you have all your settings in place, click the OK button and everything will be ready. In case you were wondering, my computer is set to Custom, because with that, I have the most control over the way my programs act on my computer. You can (and should) choose for yourself, but that's my opinion. Alright, now that you know what this feature is, go and get your programs to do what you want them to do, all in a few easy clicks!

Outlook Can Do Templates Too!

Do you find yourself sending the same or very similar messages over and over again?

I know I have… still do and it gets rather frustrating knowing that I'm repeating my work.

To avoid the repetition I'm sure that most of us have resorted to searching out an already sent message then editing a forward copy.

The method works but it can be time consuming to locate what you need and let's just hope that when you were editing you got everything changed so the new recipient isn't confused by "mismatched" information.

Instead, let's try a template. If we could have the basic message saved as a template then we could eliminate the search time and we won't have to worry about information from someone else's message being left behind.

So, here's what you need to know in order to create and use your own MS Outlook Templates.

First, we'll need a new message where we will create our template. Enter the body of the message, subject, change the font, whatever…

Once it's all set we will next need to save our template.

For people with Outlook 2007 you need the Office Button, Save As choice located in the message window.

Users of the older versions of Outlook need to use the File menu, Save As choice located in the message window.

When you go to save the file make sure to set the file type to Outlook Template.



Outlook will navigate to the correct location for saving templates so you're ready to give the template a meaningful name and click Save.

Now that you've got the template we need to know how to find it so that it can actually save us some time.

We start in Outlook's Tools menu.



From there we need the Forms submenu then the Choose Form choice.

This will open the Choose Form dialog box.



Use the drop-down list for the "Look in" field to choose User Templates in File System.

Select the template you need and click Open.

At this point I need to add an extra bit of info... if you have a signature set for every message you create then you will find that it is in the template message too. So - don't put it into the template - you'll end up with two of them and I know that's not your plan.

Anyway, with no searching, no fuss and no extra frustration the template opens as a message ready for you to finish it up and send it off.

Net Guardian II – Great Service, but Is It User Friendly?

This is a follow-up to my first article on Net Guardian, which can be found here.

How can you be sure that Net Guardian will not become obsolete?

Since there are many thousands of new Web sites added to the World Wide Web everyday, Net Guardian is able to update accordingly. Net Guardian uses high-speed computers called “Mudcrawlers”, R3000 Servers, that are powerfully arrayed to ‘crawl’ sites under specific criteria. With such capability, Net Guardian is able to easily and quickly find domain and server details for specific sites/domains. Once such sites meet the criteria, a team of real people decide whether each site should be blocked or not.



Other Features of Net Guardian

Net Guardian has a profile system which is able to change the level of filtering that you will receive. When you have a profile, you will experience a temporary change of filtering level in your Internet compared to that of Net Guardian’s default filtering system.

You will have a profile name and password to authenticate your Net Guardian filtering system to temporarily unblock the unwanted sites. As long as the profile window is left open, the level of filtering can be temporarily changed so that you will be able to view blocked sites.

Upon closing the profile window, Net Guardian’s filtering system will be back to block all unwanted categories.

Note: Having a profile does not allow any access to pornographic sites at any given time.

The account name holder will be the only one who can request a profile through email at review@netguardian.co.nz.

Why Are Some of My Wanted Sites Blocked?

A Review Team decides whether or not a site should be blocked. This way, it ensures that the sites that are of relevant use and are not supposed to be blocked come through. For example, any legitimate site like a medical site will not be blocked. There would be very few cases when wanted sites are blocked, hampering you surfing experience.

There are several reasons why pages that should not be blocked could be blocked by Net Guardian. Among such include Virtual Hosting, which could possibly block a site that is hosted on a server which has too many hosted sites that are legitimately blocked. Another reason is when the site is classified in a category that is based on your Net Guardian service level.

Why Are Some Sites Not Blocked?

Sites that should be blocked might be very new sites running on the World Wide Web, or might be an older blocked site but changed its IP address or domain name.

What to Do If Wanted Sites Are Blocked or If Unwanted Sites Are Not Blocked?

There is a way that you can unblock such sites which are not supposed to be blocked by Net Guardian or block the sites which are no longer blocked. You can submit a request for review by the Net Guardian Block Review Team so that such sites will be reviewed. They will correspond with you as soon as possible.

Summary…

It would appear that the only down side to a completely web based service like Net Guardian, when compared to other advisory services like Net Nanny or more robust services such as Cyber Patrol or Cyber Sitter, is that it would seem to only be popularly offered via www.maxnet.co.nz and that none of the subscription levels are unlimited. Therefore, as the most qualified person to decide what is best for your children, I fervently suggest that you do your own research on these, and other such programs, by visiting The Coalition for Independent Ratings Services (www.independentratings.org/ratings) and other such sites to thoroughly review your options. Yes, it may take a little time but your children are worth every minute of it!

How to Achieve Balance in Photography

Is it possible to take a photograph concentrating on just the subject that has to be captured and forgetting the evenness and poise that goes along with it?

The question was intended to be rhetorical because it but an implicit rule in photography to have what we call ‘equipoise’ or ‘balance’.

Open the closet in your house where you store old photographs in their greying albums; shredded with time due to changes in weather and hapless handling. Pick up the worst possible photograph that you find. What are you looking for? A photograph in which there is an imposing and prominent point of interest on one side, with the rest of the field void or unfilled. In other words, an unbalanced photograph.

A good photograph doesn’t imperatively mean one in which there is equal importance given to the point of focus and the vicinity. Click a picture only when you decide on a primary target and a secondary one. The rest qualify as the background or fillers. Don’t let any space go waste in your photograph; make sure that it looks full. The entities you try and capture must fill up the photograph. If there is empty ground or skies, then change the angle at which you are taking the picture. Balance essentially means to have the background, foreground and the subject in equilibrium.



It is easy to understand the concept of balance, but you can gain expertise only with practice and time. Look for photographs that lack this evenness, and also for those that could have been a wee bit more balanced. Analyze what could have been changed when the photograph was being clicked.

This is how you must acquire the right balance in your snaps:

* Chop off the edges: Use the ‘crop’ tool and remove the unnecessary field around the main image. This processing is done only later but you can learn how you could have taken a better spot to position yourself while clicking or the angle changes. Imagine the final image before you press the button! You will save a lot of post-production review.



* Shoot from the right spot: By the trial and error method, make sure -even though that means taking several trials- that you stand at the right spot. Go closer to the object or farther. Go up or down and finally find the correct position.



* Zoom your way: Make good use of the zooming option. Obtain the exact tightness around the entity of focus without diluting its importance in the final image. Zoom out for a wide-angle shot. Do it before you open the shutter.

* Shuffle and experiment: Interchange the positions of the elements you are photographing. Rearrange and create a different scene.



Visiting photography exhibitions are a great way of exposing yourself to the various abilities that people have in this magnificent art. You will see a wide range of exceptional and outstanding photography, about which you will wonder how the judges will have to pick out just one, and also some pictures that are not good enough, and you will start thinking of what you would have done to turn it into one of those sensational ones.



Learn from mistakes that have been made before. Find as many photographs as possible with a mixture of the best ones and the bad ones. Criticize and appreciate them. Say what could have been changed at the time of photography. List out the missing elements and the ones to be altered. Get more proficient at that ‘balance’ you were looking for.

Make your own rules from seeing the best snaps, and your ‘forbidden actions’ from the bad ones! And you will be on your way!

This is a super fun, highly addictive game which of course means I have to share it with all of you!

The object of the game is to collect as many planets as you can without running into any of your replicas; as time passes more and more replicas spawn for you to avoid until a portal spawns to whisk you off to the next level.

The quicker you collect the planets the more points they are worth. The more points you collect the faster the portal spawns to take you to the next level.

The second level adds a bonus objective of collecting message fragments. Once you’ve collected all the fragments you have the option to save the ship they’re coming from. The second level also adds the difficulty of navigating around stationary asteroids as you avoid your replicas.

When you get to level three you find out that not only do you have to avoid the replicas but that the ship you saved is now also tailing you adding to the difficulty.

But you also learn that there is some sort of countermeasure against replicas that you can obtain through diligent navigation of the third level.

As you can tell I’m clearly hooked. This game is so much fun, and that you can replay the levels if you fail is fantastic. Check it out today, but be warned! It’s addictive!

SWF Files

Do you have the Adobe Flash program installed on your computer? If you do, you've probably seen some .swf files on your computer at some point. Have you seen them, but you're not sure what they are exactly? That's a fair scenario. Well, I'm here to tell you all about them today, so here we go!

SWF files always come in a graphics file format and they are all produced by the Flash program. They are the files that contain the animations and the applets for all the interaction functions that come along with the material you can view with the Flash player. They are also used for different display graphics for DVD menus and TV commercials.

There have been a couple known meanings for the SWF letters, including Small Web Format and ShockWave Flash. Some people pronounce the file format as individual letters (S W F), while others call them "swiff" files. SWF files are the "top dog" when it comes to vector graphics on the Web today. So, if you ever see one of these file names on your computer, you'll know exactly where it came from and what it is used for.

What's the difference between Save and Save As?

A:
Fantastic question! Here you go:

When you use the Save command, you save your work under it's current file name. If you've never saved whatever it is you're working on before, then you'll get an opportunity to name it.

When you use Save As , you get a chance to save what you're working on as a new file.

Here's an example. Let's say you're working on a word processing document. It's a new document and you decide to save it. A box comes up that lets you give it a name. Now, let's say you add something to it. If you use the Save command again, it simply saves it with no questions asked under the existing file name.



OK, now let's say you make a modification to the file, but you want to keep the original version as well. This is where you use Save As. When you use the Save As command, it allows you to save your current file as a new file with a new name. Now when you go to open your files, you'll find you have both the original version and the new, Saved As version.

You didn't know computers could be so much fun, did you??

Putting It All Together

When we choose to store text data in MS Excel it's very common that we will create a column for each piece… such as First Name, Last Name, Middle Initial… you get the idea.

Unfortunately, there's also times when we look back upon our choice to keep the information separate and regret it. In this form the data just isn't as useful as we thought it would when we first set it all up.

Wishing the decision could be changed without a lot of work?

Or, maybe you find that you do need them separate but also together… now what?

Well, I suppose that you could re-enter the data into a single cell so that you have it both ways… but I never recommend extra work and that would be a lot of extra work!

Since we're working in Excel you've got to be wondering if there isn't a formula that can be used to combine it for you.

It's a good thought and fortunately for all of us, there is one.

The basic setup of the formula looks like this:

=cell address&" "&cell address&" "&cell address

The spaces between the quotations will be placed between the cell contents and as you can create a formula that combines more than three cells… just keep going with the pattern to combine them to your heart's content.

Here's an example:

In the first column I have 4 words that I would like combined into a single sentence.



As you can see I have a formula designed to combine them (which I duplicated below to show you the result).

And that's all there is to it. A few &'s, quotes and cell addresses and you've got yourself data combined without a lot of invested time.

Windows 7 – Connectify – Wi-Fi Hotspot

A group of developers have unlocked the hidden features in Windows 7. They have exploited this element to turn any PC running the OS to a Wi-Fi hotspot with this application called “Connectify”. Nomadio, who are the consultants for Military Networks have developed Connectify and we shall see to the features of this software with Windows 7 in this article.

Requirements:

- A PC with Windows 7

- Wireless adapter

- Software from ‘Connectify Me’ website – http://connectify.me”

- 15 Minutes of your time





Setting up Connectify:

When you log on into the website the Connectify icon will be seen in the notification area. If you can't see it then click the up arrow pointer to display additional icons. Click the Connectify icon as seen above. An error message is displayed the first time you start Connectify, since you need to enter the passphrase. We need to enter a minimum of 8 characters up to a maximum of 32 for this field. You can enter the name you prefer in the ‘Wi-Fi Name’ field.

Sharing connections:





If we have more than one connection we can share them and select the connection from the Internet pull-down menu as you can see in the above image. We can also share a wired or wireless connection and you need only one wireless adaper for the same.

When you click the ‘Hotspot Off’ button you can turn on the Connecify access point as seen above.

Connecting to the Connectify access point:

We can use Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, MAC OS, or even Linux for connecting to the Connectify software access point. We can also obtain the list of computers connected to it with the network names and IP addresses as seen in the above images. Even when we shut down the system Connectify remembers the users listing them as disconnected clients.

Windows 7 to Wi-Fi Hotspot:



Connectify uses the feature ‘Virtual Wi-Fi’ that lets the laptop tether other wireless devices to a single Internet connection by effectively turning it into a Software-based wireless router. Windows 7 is available on the notebook that acts as a wireless hotspot and any wireless-equipped device including handhelds and notebooks running any operating system can be linked online without any additional software.

Common Sense Media

In a world where technology surrounds and is racing forward in a hurry it can be hard to stay on top of all the choices that are available for your kids. This site puts it all into perspective by offering parents advice and reviews of the media that is floating around in your kid’s stratosphere.

This section talks about how you as an educator can help parents be media savvy, and aware of threats like cyber bullying and their children’s internet activities. Have you ever been doing something in Windows that involved multiple files? If so, you've probably come across a message similar to this at one time or another:



Notice how there's an option for “Yes to All”, but no button for “No to All”? What gives? I'm not going to be sitting here rapidly clicking “No” all night, am I?

Well, the good news is that if you find yourself in this situation, all you need to do to get “No to All” is hold the Shift key when you click “No”.

It's that easy! Just make sure you know what you're saying no to in the first place!

Q:
My keyboard needs to be cleaned badly! Can you give me a guide on how to get the job done?

A:
Just follow these four steps for basic keyboard cleaning.

First of all, you'll want to turn off your computer and unplug your keyboard.

1.) Turn your keyboard over and try to shake out any loose particles. This part can be pretty gross, especially if you tend to eat at your desk.

2.) It is suggested to get a can of compressed air and spray it over the keys to remove any extra debris that may be lying in between the cracks. Compressed air is available at any supermarket or computer store.

3.) Take a slightly damp cloth and run it over the keys to remove any fingerprints and any other dirt that might be settling in on your keys.

4.) Take your vacuum's dusting brush attachment and set it on a low mode. Just run it over the keyboard to make sure all remaining particles of dust, dirt, food, etc. are removed.

Now, if you need to do a more serious cleaning because you have sticky keys or your keyboard is just so filthy you can't stand it, take caution and follow the rest of these steps (continued from the steps mentioned above).

Make sure you keep track of where the keys are placed on your keyboard so you're able to put them back on in the right order. You may want to draw yourself a picture of some sort to keep track of them.

Now, using a small screwdriver, carefully remove all of the smaller keys. You're not going to want to take off the larger keys like the space bar, Shift, Enter or Tab, because those are extremely difficult to get back on.

Go back to using your compressed air to get all of that left over dirt that is refusing to come out. If you have any stains underneath the keys, use the damp cloth like before to get rid of those. Once you've got it all clean like you want it, put the keys back in their place. Each of them should snap right back on, but be careful while doing this. Also, test each key as you go, just to make sure they're working. When you're all finished, plug your keyboard back in and try out all of the keys to make sure everything is back to normal and working the way you want it to.

Please remember that the second set of steps should only be used if your keyboard is extremely dirty or clogged, and you should take special precaution when using those methods.

A Quick AutoFit Solution

Have you ever been working in MS Excel and found yourself spending all kinds of extra time trying to manually adjust column width or row heights? Or are you one of the many people who simply skip a column whenever text gets too long? (By the way, that last one can really turn into a nighmare while editing!)

Well, here's one of the many solutions to these time consuming problems that doesn't require headache medication if you need to go back and edit things later.

AutoFit.

What's AutoFit, you ask?

Well, it's exactly what it sounds like. It's a tool in MS Excel that will automatically adjust a column width or row height to accommodate the longest piece of data.

To AutoFit an entire column, go to the column labels (A, B, C, etc.) and double-click on the divider line to the right hand side. (For example, to AutoFit column B, double click on the divider line between B and C, as opposed to the divider line between A and B).



Poof! Column B has been resized to fit the largest piece of data in the column. Yeah!

Need a row height adjusted to match the data?

No problem. Simply move your mouse pointer to the row number on the left and then double-click on the bottom divider line. (This picture shows an AutoFit height adjustment for row 3).



Click, click and it all fits!
