What’s the quickest way to the Task Manager?

All about speed, eh? Well, the quickest and easiest way to get to your Windows Task Manager is simply to right-clickan empty area of your Task Bar and choose “Start Task Manager”.

Gmail is the fastest growing choice for email, and its rapid development has attracted an ever-growing number of users. However, with this rise in usage, the number of different types of mails we receive has increased too. There are various mails like newsletters, deals and offers, chat and Facebook notifications and what not. With so many different categories filling up our inbox, it’s extremely crucial that we have a management strategy for our emails to prevent important ones from getting lost in the clutter.

Using Gmail Filters to Categorize Emails

Filters are an amazing way to take control of your incoming mails in Gmail. With filters, you can sort mail into different folders as and when they arrive. This sorting is done automatically, and creating a filter is just a one-time process.

Before we go ahead with the sorting, it is extremely important to formulate a strategy for dividing mails into categories.

Let us consider a scenario: I am an active social media user and blogger – I read newsletters, and I am subscribed to deals for my city. Therefore, my probable labels are Social Media, Blog comments, Newsletters and Deals.

Now that you have decided on your label names, it is time to create them.

I am using the new look on Gmail, which has the feature of creating filters without going to the settings page at all.

Step 1: Select some of the mails you want to filter into one label and select “Filter messages like these” from the drop-down menu.

Step 2: Test a search with the filters as applied by you, and make sure no irrelevant results get through. Now, we are ready to create a filter using this search. Click on the link saying, “Create a filter with this search”.

Step 3: Now that we have a number of emails matching this search, we will decide what to do with them. If you already have a label suitable for these emails, then simply create the filter. Or else, click on “Choose a label” as shown.

Step 4: If you click on choose a label, it will show you the following list. Click on “New label…” and a window will appear asking you to enter the name of the label.

As you can see, I am naming my label DB Backup.

Step 5: Select the checkbox beside the “Create a filter” button that says, “Also apply filter to (n) matching conversations”.

Click on “Create a filter” and we are done.

The Scale of the Universe 2

I remember being blown away when I brought you the visual cell size scale, but now I’ve discovered The Scale of the Universe 2!

When you arrive at the site, you’ll notice the instructions are right on the main page. You’ll use the slide bar to zoom in an out, and then you can click on objects to learn more about them. Click the black start button to begin your exploration of the universe.

The first thing I noticed was that there is nice background sound to the application, but if you are at work, you’ll want to click the music notes in the top right corner to turn off the sound. Now while your navigating the universe, I noticed that I can also use my mouse wheel to zoom in and out. I found that was way easier than moving the slider bar.

The other thing I noticed – probably because I love sparkle – is that when you get zoomed way out into the universe and are looking at nebulas – they sparkle! I found I wanted to click them and learn more about them. And when you zoom in to the universe past what you can see with the naked eye, the rays are animated. I like little touches like that because they’re unexpected and make the interface more fun to use.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. When I first installed it the aero snap feature worked, but now does not. Can you advise how to get it working again?

Aero Snap, the feature which automatically expands windows when you drag them near the edges of the screen, can easily be enabled/disabled.

Step 1.) Click on Start, then click Control Panel.

Step 2.) In the search box in the upper right hand corner type: accessibility. This should bring up the options for Ease of Access Center. Click on View current accessibility settings.

Step 3.) Click on Make it easier to focus on tasks, and then click Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen to disable aero snap. If you want to enable it, make sure the box is unchecked.

Step 4.) Click Apply, then OK.

That’s it! Aero Snap is now enabled. You can learn more about this feature at:

The same way that you reformat ANY drive, Pinky… BY TRYING TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!

Sorry, been watching too much “Pinky and the Brain” lately.

Actually, Bob, a flash drive can be reformatted the same way as any other drive. Start by going to “Computer”, right-click on the drive, and then click on “format”.

Once there, you have the choice of whether or not to choose a “quick” format. Unless you’re trying to seriously hide stuff from someone (in which case shame on you) then a quick format should be adequate. Click “start”.

Once it says “format complete”, you’re ready to go.

Android Text Response

With Android 4.0, a new feature was introduced that provides an option to personally respond to an inconvenient phone call. Now, along with the choices available in earlier Android versions–answering calls directly, or sending them to voice mail–calls can also be replied to quickly with a text response. Fortunately, if your Android phone isn’t built on the 4.0 operating system, recent updates may still include this feature.

As it was in earlier versions, to speak to the caller, just slide the white receiver icon to the green receiver.

Kurt Vonnegut's Home

My final English course is wrapping up this semester, and I was jesting that I’d never have to take another literature course ever again (I’m not sure what I’m doing for my graduate work yet), but it got me to thinking on all the interesting tidbits about authors I’ve learned over the years. Just a little glimpse into what their lives were like, where they lived, what they read, what they liked to do – that sort of thing. I’m bringing you today’s site with that feeling in mind.

Your Weekly Update In The World Of Technology

Kiss Your Unlimited Data Goodbye

Do you currently have an unlimited data plan through Verizon? Well, that most likely won’t be the case anymore the next time you upgrade. Verizon Wireless is planning on forcing customers into tiered data plans when they upgrade next. This will also be followed up with a plan to create “data shares” over a plan. Shared data will be accessible to all devices on a single account.

Up until now Verizon has allowed unlimited data users to keep their plan when they upgrade to a new phone. This was a big deal since they stopped offering new unlimited data plans nearly a year ago. This will come as a big shock to so-called “power users” that take full advantage of unlimited data. The previous unlimited plan cost $30 per month. The existing tiered plans only allow 2 GB a month of data for the exact same price. There’s no word yet what the pricing will be on shared data plans, but Verizon is starting to realize the demand and usage for data is increasing, especially with more and more devices using 4G-LTE.

Currently Sprint is the only national carrier that allows its new customers to have an unlimited data plan.

Facebook Thinks You’re Worth $1.21

How much does Facebook think you’re worth to them? Well, in purely financial terms, only a buck twenty-one. This number is based on Facebook’s sales of over $1 billion per quarter (three months) and its 900 million users.

Compared to other tech and communications companies, that number is extremely low. Companies such as Verizon Wireless ($160.98/quarter), AT&T ($507.00/quarter, and Comcast ($430.20/quarter) each bring in well over $100 per customer in a quarter. The big difference here is that Facebook makes money off its users via advertising, while the previously mentioned companies offer direct services we pay for.

It could be worse, however. Microsoft? You’re only worth $0.81. Twitter? $0.74. Think about that next time you fire up your Windows PC or send that tweet.

Let’s admit it, YouTube is the new Cable and we are all addicted to it. However there comes a time for everyone when we are out of ideas on what to watch. The recommendations seem all repeated, and the brain can’t come up with what to search for…

Well, how would you like to watch some videos that were shot near you instead? ‘Videos Near Me’ is a webapp which aggregates videos based on location using their Geo Tags.

You start with selecting your location on the google map. By default, Google Maps pre-determines a ballpark location for you – all you have to do is tweak it to make it precise. Once your location is set, the site pulls out all the videos on YouTube that were shot around where you live. It’s pretty fascinating, and you might even learn something new about where you live.

A pretty novel way to see what’s going on around you, indeed! I had no idea that there was a crazy carpet crawling Kitty living near me. How have I lived so long in the same area without knowing it, I simply can’t Fathom!

Since I learned to knit last summer, I’ve been obsessed with the craft. I love anything and everything knitting related, but the idea of mixing science (specifically in this case physics) with knitting makes me geek out!

Inverse Selections

Have you ever needed to select *most* of the files in a folder using Windows Explorer? Maybe you’re copying them to a floppy, moving them to new home, or doing some other type of exciting file management activity.

In any case, it can be a hassle since most of us just select up to the first file we don’t want, do whatever it was we were going to do with the files, then move on to the next section.

Here’s a better way!

First, select the files you DON’T want. If there are multiple files that you don’t want, hold down your Ctrl key as you select the files. I know, it sounds like I’ve finally lost it, but stick with me here.

Next, go to the Edit menu and select ” Invert Selection ” from the menu.

The files you selected previously are now deselected and everything else is selected. It’s almost like magic, isn’t it?

Want another one? OK, take this:

Go into the folder with the files you want, hit Ctrl+A (that will select the whole mess).

Next, hold down your Ctrl key and click the files you don’t want. That’ll deselect ‘em good.

Note: If you’re using Windows 7 you may not see a menu bar at the top of your explorer window. Press your ALT key to make it pop up.

I recently purchased a 32GB USB Flash Drive. Using Windows 7′s computer button to view all system connections, I selected the new drive and requested its properties via a right-click.

It indicated a capacity of 32,027,770,880 Bytes followed with 29.8GB.
Why is there a difference between these numbers, and actually how much available space is on the drive?

USB Flash Drives, along with hard drives and other types of computer storage, are measured in bytes. The problem is that the definition of a megabyte/gigabyte isn’t really the same between computers and storage manufactures. A computer says a kilobyte is 1024 bytes and a megabyte is 1024 kilobytes. So one megabyte (one million bytes) is actually 1,048,576 bytes. To get to 32 gigabytes you have to multiply 1024 (bytes) x 1024 (kilobytes) x 1024 (megabytes) x 32 (gigabytes) which gives you 34,359,738,268 bytes of information.

However, computer hard drive and storage makers had the clever idea that a gigabyte is defined as a “billion” bytes, so why do they need to give you extra bytes you didn’t pay for just because someone who made the PC decided 1024 bytes are in a kilobyte? So industry practice is to label things in even numbers, even though computers will see less space as measured in GB. You do get 32,000,000,000 bytes when you buy 32GB, but your PC isn’t counting the same way everyone else would!

Android 4.0 Home Screen Browser Shortcuts

There are many logical reasons for browser shortcuts; convenience, efficiency, etc. or, in my case–somewhat less logically–annoyance. Due to a sensitivity (paranoia?) to permissions required by Android apps, I decided that the most recent Facebook for Android app finally asked for one too many annoying and meddlesome permissions, when it required the ability to record audio and take pictures and videos.

OpenOffice: It’s All About The Keys

Many people much prefer using key combinations over the mouse when completing their work.

Some just find that it takes way too much time to keep removing their hand from the keyboard to accomplish something with the mouse. Mostly I agree, it seems that 9 times out of 10 things move faster when I know the key combinations to work with.

At any rate, if this is you then you may be wondering how you can find the key combinations that are used in OpenOffice.

Movie Review Query Engine

So, you’re thinking about going to the movies or maybe renting one, but you’re not sure what would be good to see. Well, on this Web site, you can find movie reviews that will help you decide if a film is worth seeing or not!

Registration is free and it will give you access to premium features, such as extra reviews and to see if the film you’re looking up is showing in your area. Only the blanks with “required” beneath them are necessary in order to register.

The easiest way to use this site is to search by the title of the movie. It’s awesome if you know what you are looking for. Don’t have a movie in mind? Well, that’s no problem either, because you can also search by Search Categories. This search engine is a drop down menu, so just choose what you want to search by and click Go.

My favorite option is Recent Releases, because it’s a great way to find out what’s in the theaters now and how they fared with other viewers.

You can also check out Upcoming Releases if you want to plan your movie trip ahead of time. Or, maybe do a search for “most popular title” for the last week, previous day, last 12 hours or last three hours.

No matter how you search, you are bound to find tons of reviews on the movie of your choice. Check it out today and have fun at the movies!

Custom Folder Picture

This tip is for our fans of folder customization. Take a look at one of the folder icons on your desktop and you’ll notice that there’s a picture sticking out of it. Like this:

It would appear that this is just a random picture, chosen by Windows, but we all know better – we know that there’s gotta be a way to change it.

And there is!

Just Right-Click the folder and choose Properties. From here, make sure the Customize tab is selected and under Folder Pictures, choose Choose File… (Might be “Choose Picture” under Windows XP)

Now simply browse to a location on your hard drive that’s got a picture you want to use, select it and choose Open. Click OK.

Now your folder has its own custom picture!

I have a web site that I use daily and have to type the www address every time. Is there a way to give it an icon and pin it to the toolbar? Thanks!

You can do this by creating a new shortcut on your desktop to the website address, then pin it to the task bar. It’s really easy!

Step 1) Right click on an empty area of your desktop and go down to New then left click create Shortcut.

Step 2) Type into the “Type the location of the item:” box the full website address begining with http://www. For example if you want to go to worldstart.com type in: http://www.worldstart.com and press Next

Step 3) Type in a name for the shortcut describing what it is in the “Type a name for this shortcut:” box and press Finish.

Step 4) The next step is to pin your web browser to your task bar if it’s not already there. Click Start > Programs > then go to your internet web browser icon, right click it and select Pin to Taskbar. (If you already have an internet browser icon always on your task bar (even when you close your web browser), you can skip this step.

Step 5) Click and hold the mouse button on the shortcut you made to the website and drag it over to your internet browser icon on your task bar. Once it is over it, let go of the mouse button.

Step 6) Now when you right click on internet explorer you should see your link at the top of the menu! You can add other pinned items to this the same way.

You can delete the shortcut from your desktop once you’ve dragged/dropped it. Internet explorer will remember it.

The same instructions work with Firefox. You can also drag the shortcut on to your start menu to put it there or just leave it on your desktop and click the desktop icon to go right to the website.

Clear Android Applications Cache to Improve Performance

In this tip, I’ll show you how to improve the performance of an Android phone by clearing the cache memory. I’ve used the most commonly found version of Android, 2.2, to illustrate the steps.

There are two ways of accessing Settings. The simplest is to press the menu key on the phone. Typically, it is the left corner key on Android phones. After you press this key, some options appear. Tap Settings.

My Dell computer, running Windows XP, cannot read CDs. When I put one in, I get the hourglass and nothing else. What could be wrong?

The first question; was it a commercial CD or a copied disc? Sometimes copies of CDs are not finalized correctly, and they won’t play in anything other than the machine in which they were burned.

The second question; is it a CD or an unmarked DVD? Not all computers have the capability to play DVDs. Most of the newer models can play almost any type of disc, but older Dells aren’t able to play certain discs. Make sure it’s a CD you are putting in the computer.

If you put in the CD and the hourglass shows up, try clicking on the hourglass symbol. This will often cause an error message to pop up and let you know what is going on. Sometimes the message will tell you to insert a disc. This message usually appears when a blank disc is inserted in a computer that isn’t equipped with a disc burner. While most computers can play CDs, not all are able to burn them. Due to this lack of disc-burning capability, these computers will not acknowledge a blank disc.

However, if you know for sure that your computer is able to play CDs, the cause may be your media player settings. Try the following steps:

Other than for security purposes, does shredding files gain back hard drive space? How does it work, exactly?

Hi, Joe. Thanks for the great question.

Whether you delete a file from your recycle bin or shred it, the space is made available for your computer to use. Although in either case it is still technically taking up the same amount of space on your hard drive, your computer can still overwrite the information. The big difference is that when you simply delete a file from your recycle bin, the file is still there and can be recovered using specialized forensic software.

Zip Decode

This Web site is a really fun application! What you see is a map of the U.S.A. and what you’re going to do is put in zip codes. Let’s check it out!

For example, type in my zip code: 43610

It will show you exactly where my zip code is on the map. Then if you click the Z key or click on the word Zoom, it will zoom in on that location. In the zoomed in mode, the other dots represent the zip codes near by.

If you hold down the Shift key and type in more numbers, it will change the location. So, let’s try 44052. That’s the zip code I grew up in.

The image of the map itself is all the dots of the zip codes. Isn’t it interesting that it still keeps the shape of the country?!

I like to put in random numbers and see where I end up. I found out where 72560, 81501 and 12345 were!

Missing Volume Control Icon?

Hey, Windows 7 users. Have you ever lost your volume icon? You go to change your volume by using the little icon that sits in the bottom right hand corner of your desktop (right next to your clock) and it’s nowhere to be found?

So aggravating!

Well, If you’re using Windows 7, the fix is easy! First, click the Start orb, and in the search box (which appears directly above), type System icons. This should populate a list. Click the one that says “Customize icons on the taskbar.”

In the next window, click Turn system icons on or off.

Now, in this final window, make sure the dropdown box next to Volume is set for On.

Click OK when you’re finished, and your volume icon should be restored!

Life Shouldn't Be So Dark...

Since hard drive failure is one of our greatest fears, does it make any sense to routinely replace a primary hard drive in an otherwise well functioning computer? If so, when and how?

Hard drive failure is a great fear, especially when you have thousands of photos, documents and songs that you can’t easily replace.

The first step to good hard drive maintenance is to use a S.M.A.R.T. (short for Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) reading program, which can give you an indication if your hard drive is experiencing errors or being exposed to very high heat – which is known to shorten the lifespan of the hard drive. Active@ makes a great utility calledHard Disk Monitor which allows you to read the S.M.A.R.T. status (and it even tells you what the numbers mean, and which numbers you want high or low). This utility is available as a 14 day free trial at http://disk-monitor.com/

The second step is to try to fix anything that may be shortening your hard drive’s lifespan.The big enemies of a hard drive, outside of inherit mechanical failure, are heat and power loss. Heat can be a result of a case that’s filled with dust, animal hair and other things that have built up over the years.

The easiest way to clean your system out is to use compressed air and spray the fans, boards and components off. If you’re doing this, make sure not to spray any of the liquid compressed air, and take care to discharge any static on your body before touching computer components.

You can fix the power loss issue by owning a high quality battery backup power protector (available in most office superstores starting at $50), which will prevent a power loss from causing a read/writer operating to fail – or worse, a hard drive to not return its write head to the resting position. Most modern hard drives automatically return to rest when there is a power loss, but why tempt fate?

The third step is to replace your hard drive before it dies. This is easier than you might think, and you can use modern drive cloning programs (such as Laplink Diskimage ) to make an exact copy of your hard drive. On a desktop computer, it is as easy as plugging in the second hard drive into your machine, making a copy, then removing the old hard drive. The process is much the same for a laptop, except that you would need an external USB adapter to load the second hard drive to make the copy.

Also, make sure you buy the right type of hard drive. To tell what type of hard drive you have (IDE or Sata) see the picture below.

Once the copy is done, you remove the old hard drive and connect only the new one and your computer should be none the wiser happy with a brand new hard drive in it.

Note: Upgrading your hard drive is a great time to consider faster/bigger hard drives. Many desktops come with 5400 RPM drives, and while being cheaper they do not offer the performance of 7200 RPM drives or 10,000 RPM drives.

MS OneNote: Transferring Your Notes to Another MS Program

There are times when we need our OneNote notes transferred to MS Word, PowerPoint or Excel.

Maybe we’re sending them to someone who doesn’t have OneNote or maybe we need to incorporate them into a document.

Whatever the reason, we’ve got information in OneNote and we want it in a different format… the question is how do we accomplish our goal?

Clear Your Firefox Downloads List

If you’re anything like me, you have quite a few files you’ve downloaded via Firefox. How do I know this? Well, on my computer all I have to do is open up Firefox and click Tools>Downloads and this window pops up.

It looks pretty cluttered – and in need of a good clear-out, but I’d still like to keep a few select files listed here, just in case I need to find them at a later date.

So, to delete singular downloads from your Firefox queue, simply right-click the download you’d like to delete from the list and select Remove From List.

It’s that easy!

Remember, you can also clear the entire list by clicking the Clear List button at the bottom of the download window, too.

Note: This doesn’t delete the physical file from your computer; just the listing in the Firefox downloads window.

With Thunderbird (or any other client based email), once it is downloaded to your computer from the mail server is it then deleted and no longer in existence?

E-Mail Clients like Outlook, Windows Live Mail and Thunderbird (along with others) offer a vast array of extra features, but can pose problems if you want to keep your e-mails portable. This is why there are a few different kinds of e-mail systems companies can use – and which one you have access to will determine whether your messages get erased from the server once you download them, or kept accessible for other devices/computers.

POP/POP3: (Post Office Protocol) This is the e-mail method most companies used years ago and many still offer. It will store your e-mails on the server until you download them. In most cases, once you download them they are deleted.

IMAP: (Internet Message Access Protocol) This is the e-mail method prefered by most e-mail providers today and lets your e-mail client sync up to the server and download copies of the messages. This method also lets you access messages on multiple devices and allows them to sync so that e-mails deleted on one device delete on the other and e-mails downloaded on a phone (for example) will automatically download on your other devices next time they connect.

Exchange/Blackberry/Other Corporate E-mail Systems: These e-mail systems most often work very much like IMAP, but support various corporate security systems which prevent access and can control (very specifically) what and how things are sent. They often also support automatic archiving of messages for legal compliance, so even “Deleted” e-mail is often kept for months, sometimes years, based on the company’s requirements. These systems offer multiple device sync and store messages on the server also, and usually require access either through a company IT department or by special request.

What’s the best one to use? IMAP if you have personal e-mail, and Exchange if your using company e-mail – but check with your company as individual configurations can vary greatly.

P.S. Your web based e-mail clients (like Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail and iCloud all support IMAP as the preferred connection type. You only need to set the connection type if your using these e-mail providers in a dedicated e-mail application the website will automatically save and store your information on the server.

Thanks for the question Andy and, yes there is. Apps installed from the Android market generally create a home screen shortcut. But, whether using pre-installed or downloaded apps for which shortcuts are not created, when you find yourself returning to the same one frequently, it’s easier to get at it from a shortcut on the home screen.

I need to update my PC processor. I have an old Dell Dimension 4600 Pentium 4 2.66GHz-1.5GB RAM-AGP card slot. Can I just buy a better/faster processor like a Duo or quad core or something for my PC?

First, you’ll need to find out how many pins your processor has. You won’t be able to purchase just any old processor and plug it into your computer if the pins don’t match up. The Dell Dimension 4600 uses a Socket 478 processor. Since this type of processor is no longer being produced, finding a new one might be rather difficult. They also might be expensive. However, you may be able to locate a suitable processor on eBay.

The Dell Dimension 4600 is supposed to be able to support up to as much as a 3.4 GHz Pentium 4 with an 800 MHz FSB. Of course, the max limit will depend on which type of Dimension 4600 you own. Since you currently have a 2.66 GHz in the computer, you should be able to upgrade to a microprocessor that runs at 2.8 – 3.06 GHz internally and 533 MHz externally.

Due to the age of the Dell Dimension 4600, it may be less expensive to purchase a computer, rather than investing a lot of money into upgrading your current system. However, if you are serious about keeping the Dimension 4600 and doing some upgrading, then you will be better off to change out a few components.

Don't Highlight That!

Have you ever noticed that Windows XP always highlights the new programs you install on your computer in the Start menu? I mean, it's helpful if you're new to computers and you're not sure where to go after installing a new program, but sometimes Windows will also highlight multiple aspects of the installed programs that aren't really necessary, such as the "Read Me" files and so on. Plus, those items remain highlighted until you actually run them. That can get quite annoying, especially once you become more experienced with your computer and know where the items go once they're installed. Talk about frustrating!

If you let it continue, your Start menu will start to look like an orange striped zebra! That is, unless you go through and run every program you install at least once (and many times more often than that, because for some unknown reason, some programs will be rehighlighted after restarting your computer). Who has time for all that?! So, if you would prefer not to have to go through all of that, there is a way you can get back to normal. Here's how you can turn the highlighting feature off in Windows XP. Let's go!

Welcome to Namepedia, an encyclopedia for names! Have you ever wondered what your first name means? Would you like to find out how your last name originated? Maybe you’d like to find a baby name. Well, you can do all of that and more right here!

In the center of the main page, you’ll find a search engine. It has four tabs above it: First Name, Family Name (last name/surname), Full Name and Real People. There’s also a More option, but I didn’t use it.

Type in a first name if you just want to try it out. You can use your own name or you could use my name. I put in Amanda and clicked on Search.

After you search and choose the entry you want, you’ll find the origin, meaning, relations, pronunciation and even a rating for the name on the page. It was really neat to listen to the different pronunciations of my name.

Along the top of the page, there are more tabs. Some correlate with the search engine and some don’t. They are: First Names, Family Names, Real People, Baby, Interactive and More.

I really liked the baby section. You can even create your own list of baby names. To do so, you’ll need to register for the Web site. All you need to do is click on the Create an Account link at the top of the page, put in an e-mail address, a password and then log in. You should then get a confirmation e-mail. Now, choose how you’d like it to appear: public, friends only, private, whether the child is male or female, where they’ll live, what language they’ll speak and the 10 names you like.

People can then vote on the names you picked. That would be a great way to get your friends’ and family’s opinion on baby names you’ve chosen. Check out the list I created as an example here. They can then rate the names you picked and offer you three more ideas of their own. They can also leave a comment and then click on the Send My Opinion button.

If you’re into celebrities, the Real Name section is for you! Here you can search for famous people by name. For example, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Emmy Rossum. If you search, they’ll give you the full name of the celebrity, their nationality and what their profession is. Also, at the bottom, you’ll find articles about them.

This Web site is definitely worth bookmarking for all your naming needs!

Smartphones Are Taking Over The Social World

We all knew that Facebook use was increasing across mobile devices, but did we know by how much? According to a report by comScore, smartphones spent more time accessing Facebook than computers in March. Of course, anyone with any experience with a slow wi-fi or wireless data connection on their mobile device could easily argue why that’s true…

According to the Mobile Metrix 2.0 report, users spent an average of 441 minutes accessing Facebook during the month. In comparison, users spent an average of 391 minutes using the social network on PCs. These numbers help to solidify the idea that mobile use is the future of computing – at least in the social networking world. The report also states that Facebook was number one amongst all other social networks, taking the top spot over Twitter, Foursquare, and LinkedIn.

Bionic Suit, Meet Marathon.

It’s a story of cutting edge technology and unbeatable human spirit – and the 26.2 miles they smashed together. After 16 days, 32-year-old Claire Lomas finished the London Marathon. So what makes that so remarkable? She did it in a bionic suit. After a horse riding accident back in 2007, Lomas was paralyzed from the chest down. The suit she donned was the ReWalk and was invented by Amit Goffer. It allows parapalegics to both stand and walk.

Lomas is the first person in history to complete a marathon in a full bionic suit. The marathon was part of a fundraising project that has so far raised $125,000 towards paralysis treatment and research.

Moving Files from Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail

Outlook Express has been a mainstay of email clients since it came bundled with Internet Explorer since 1997. With Windows Vista and 7, users have to move to the rebranded version, Windows Live Mail.

This would be a good opportunity for users to clean up old email and addresses, but moving files from an old machine with Outlook Express 6 to a new one running Windows Live Mail is fairly easy. You will need a thumb drive (also called a flash drive or USB drive) that is available at any electronics or office supply store for a few dollars.

On the old computer, place the USB drive into the computer. There will be slots available on the front and/or back of most computers and laptops. There is a right way up, so don’t force it. Once the computer has accepted it, a window will pop up in the lower right saying the device is ready for use.

Right-click on the “Start” button in the lower left corner of the screen and then click on “Explore.”

In the folder list on the left, click the “+” signs next to the folders to drill down to your Outlook Express files. They will be located under “Documents and Settings” and then the folder with your user name for the computer. Under that, click on “Application Data” then “Local Settings” and then “Identities.” Under that will be a folder with a bunch of letters and numbers on it. Click on that, then “Microsoft” and finally, “Outlook Express.”

In the window on the right, click on the first file in the list. Then move the cursor down and hold down the “Shift” key while you click on the last file in the list. (You may have more files than shown.

This will highlight all of the files in the list. Then right-click (Click the right mouse button) and select “Copy” from the menu.

Next, go back to the window on the left and scroll down to the bottom. The Thumb drive you inserted will be called “Removable Disk” with a drive letter most likely of “E:” or “F:” Click on that in the left window. The right window will be blank if this is a new thumb drive.

Right-click anywhere in the right way and select “Paste” from the drop down window. If the paste option is greyed out, or you can’t click on it, you didn’t complete the copy procedure correctly. Go back and try to copy until you can paste the files here. Once you click paste, all the files you highlighted above will now be in the right window.

Next, you need to get the address book. Follow the same procedure as above, but this time under the user directory, click on “Application Data” then “Microsoft” and finally, “Address Book.” The address book will be in the right window with your user name and an extension of WAB (Windows Address Book). Right-click to copy and then paste it to the thumb drive the same way you did the Outlook Express files.

Remove the thumb drive from the old computer and insert it into the new computer. Start Windows Live Mail by clicking the Start icon in the lower-left of the screen and selecting “Windows Live Mail” on the menu.

Tap the “Alt” key to bring up the traditional “File, Edit View…” menu. Click on “File” and then “Import” and finally “Messages.”

This will bring up a “Select Program” window. Select “Microsoft Outlook Express 6” and click “Next”

It will then ask for the location of the messages. Click on “Computer” to expand the device list if necessary and choose “Removable Disk” again. Note that the drive letter may be different on this machine than it was on the old one. Click “OK”

A “Select Folders” window will pop up. Accept the default of “All folders” and click “Next.”

This will import all of your old mail into your new Windows Live mail system. Next, you need to import your address book.

In the lower left of your Windows Live Mail window, click “Contacts.”

Tap the “Alt” key again and then click on “File,” “Import” and “Windows address book (.WAB).”

In the file dialog that pops up, scroll back down to your thumb drive and select the “.wab” file from the list. Click “Open” and the program will import all your contacts into the new Windows Live Mail contact list.

Yes, you can turn this feature off (disable the password), and no, it’s probably not a good idea to delete your password all together. As a user, your account is much more secure if it has a password. So keep the password; you don’t have to log on with it just because it’s there! And here’s how.

#1. Point to Start, then Run, and then click on Run.

The Speed Trap Exchange

We all know they’re out there, waiting to catch speeders as they go by. Whether they are in plain view or hidden, speed traps exist all over the place. You’re probably familiar with the ones in your local area, but what if you’re on an out of state trip? I think we all know drivers with out of state plates are often targeted for speeding tickets, because they are more likely to pay than come back and fight their ticket in court. I know it’s true in Ohio!

This Web site is devoted to helping you avoid speed traps during your travels. You can also help out by reporting the speed traps you know about. The site’s navigation is pretty simple. You can get started by using the side menu to browse the following sections:

Add a Speed Trap – Here is where you can add a speed trap to the site’s listings. Notice that it may take several days for your submission to be reviewed and please make sure to follow the six guidelines posted when you fill out the form.

Speed Trap Listings – Here you will find speed traps in alphabetical order by location. The locations are: the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. These are speed traps that have been reported by local residents of those places. I, of course, went to Ohio and checked out the speed traps not only for Toledo, but for Lorain. The ones for Lorain (which is my hometown) I already knew about, but there were some listed for Toledo that I wouldn’t have thought of and I am very grateful to know about them now!

Fight a Speeding Ticket – This will take you to a page where you can go through 10 steps on how to fight a traffic ticket. There is an FAQ section here that is also a good read, along with a great tip section on how to avoid getting ticketed. The tip section on avoiding tickets has some great advice I think all drivers should know. For example, check your lights, keep your car clean, don’t stand out and many more.

Speed Trap Laws – The states listed in blue are linked so that you can click them and find out what the speed trap laws are for that particular location. Only a handful of states appear to have speed trap laws.

How to Eliminate Speed Traps – This section points out several ways you can work to eliminate the speed traps in your area. You’ll learn how to contact the right authorities to get the information on speed limits in your area, as well as, a letter you can send to your legislators.

Speed Limits: Fact & Fiction – In this section, the link I found most useful was the State Speed Limit Chart. Here you can see the speed limits for both day and night for all 50 states. You’ll also find links to research, models and explanations of speed limits.

Of course, the best way to avoid a speeding ticket is to not go over the posted limit, but sometimes that makes you a hazard to traffic that is moving faster than you and you have to go with the flow. Be careful out there and remember to buckle up!

To understand why defragmentation (or defrag) is necessary, let’s go over how a hard drive stores files. Your hard drive is made up of sectors and blocks, which are like file folders and filing cabinets in an office. When a document, picture or other file wants to save to your hard drive the drive needs to find space to put it. To make most efficient use of the space on your hard drive (and allow you to easily delete/move files), the hard drive breaks up the files into little pieces and stores them where there is available space on the drive. The result of this is a file that may exist as a single, but pieces of it may be in 3 different parts of the hard drive. When you go to open the picture the hard drive knows to look in those 3 separate areas to get the complete file.

So why do you need to defragment if the hard drive knows where to look? Two reasons: Speed and wear-and-tear.

Speed: Every time the hard drive needs to move the read head to a new location it takes a certain amount of time to move. If the file is in one single area of the hard drive, the head only needs to move once to read the file. If the file is contained in 3 different places, the head needs to move 3 times to get the same file, making the time it takes to load longer.

Wear-and-tear: As a mechanical device, your hard drive read head moves a lot as it accesses files. Limiting the amount of times it has to move is going to increase the drives lifespan.

By defragmenting the hard drive all the files that can be lined up together are moved so that the hard drive reads files faster, has less movement needed, and lasts longer. Win/Win!

Is there a way to make Firefox remember passwords like it used to? At some point, one of the updates dropped this feature.

If you frequently access the same websites over and over, it can become tedious to type the same passwords repeatedly. By default, the Mozilla Firefox web browser should automatically ask if you want to save a password anytime you enter one at any given web page – but this feature can be turned off. Whether the password memory setting was removed due to upgrading to another version of the browser, or someone accidentally clicked the wrong box in the options screen, it’s a very simple process to get Firefox remembering your passwords again.

To open the main Firefox menu containing all the browser’s various settings, click the orange “Firefox” button at the upper-left corner of the window.

Click the “Options” heading inside the “Firefox” menu, and then click the second “Options” button to bring up a new window containing a series of tabs. If you have your browser set to the classic menu layout without the “Firefox” button, instead click the “Tools” button at the top of the screen and then select “Options.”

Navigate to the tab labeled “Security,” which is positioned between the “Sync” and “Privacy” tabs at the top of the window.

Locate the “Remember Passwords for Sites” box underneath the “Passwords” heading. Click the box if it isn’t currently checked to turn the password memory feature back on. Leave the box as-is if it’s already checked.

If the box was already checked but Firefox hasn’t been asking you to remember passwords, you may have an exception in place that stops the browser from asking about passwords for specific sites. Click the “Exceptions” button located to the right of the “Remember Passwords for Sites” box.

Scroll through the list of sites and find the specific web page where you need to enter in your password frequently. Click the name of the site and then select “Remove” to remove the password memory exception. If you instead want to remove all the sites and have Firefox ask about saving passwords for every website you visit, click the “Remove All” button. Click “Close” and then “OK” to save the changes and restore the web browser’s password memory feature.

Access any web page where you normally need a password and type your username and password in the appropriate text boxes. Tap “Enter”, or click the “Log In” button and wait for Firefox to bring up a new prompt asking if you want to save your password. Click the “Save Password” button to store the password for future use.

iMessage for iOS 5

With the debut of iOS 5, Apple released an innovate new feature called iMessage. Basically, iMessage is a built-in messaging platform that can be used between any iOS devices, that is, iPhones, iPod touches, or iPads. Along with the usual ability to send texts, iMessage boasts some pretty nifty features which I’d like to explore with you today.

iMessage comes enabled on iPhones by default. However, if you own an iPod touch or iPad you’ll need to activate it by selecting the Settings icon, followed by Messages, and turning on iMessage. Just follow the on-screen instructions and sign in with your Apple ID.

I tend to save a lot of websites to my Favorites folder. I looked today and there are tons that are out of date. How can I get rid of my old Favorites without having to go through every single one?

Hi, Alanna! I, too, save lots of websites (too many!) in my Favorites folder (they are technically called bookmarks).

The only way to do it within your Windows operating system is outlined here.

The way I do it is by using a program called AM-DeadLink (v.4.4). It is seriously the best program out there for removing all of your dead links and any that you have put in twice (or three times … or four times …).This is from the Publisher:

AM-DeadLink detects dead links and duplicates in your Browser Bookmarks. If a Bookmark has become unavailable you can verify it in the internal preview and delete it from your Browser. Additionally you can download FavIcons for all your Favorites and Bookmarks. AM-Deadlink works with Internet Explorer, Opera, Mozilla and Firefox.

Geek and Sundry

I have been a long time fan of the web series The Guild, so when Felicia Day announced that she was producing a Google channel called Geek and Sundry, I waited in anticipation of its launch. Now that it has launched, and I’ve watched all the shows, I’m so happy to share this bastion of geekery with you.

The main menu is smack dab in the middle of the page, with each image representing the landing pad of one of the shows.

The shows are:

The Guild – here you can find the past four seasons of The Guild, as well as the weekly re-release of episodes of season five. You’ll also find bonus content, cast interviews and more. The Guild is a web series that centers on the adventures of Sid Sherman and her “Knights of Good” guild-mates interactions both online in a fictional MMO that is vaguely reminiscent of World of Warcraft, and offline in face to face encounters. If you’re a gamer, or know one, you’re sure to find this web series hilarious.

The Flog – this is Felicia Day’s show. It’s called The Flog as a combination of Felicia and Vlog. It’s dedicated to anything she wants to do. So far she’s tried her hand at blacksmithing, cooking, as well as shown off her talent with the violin. My favorite portion of the show is usually the Fave Five where she lists five of her favorite things for the week.

Written by a Kid – this show premieres on July 18^th and looks like it is going to be awesome. The premise is that they asked kids ages 5-10 to tell an original sci-fi, fantasy, or horror story and then they turn the kid’s ideas over to a different director every week to bring to life.

Sword and Laser – if you like to read sci-fi or fantasy, you’re going to want to watch this show. For me this is a must watch. Based on the very successful, internet book club of the same name that had a pod cast where people could tune in. Now, Veronica Belmont and Tom Merritt have used this opportunity to extend Sword and Laser to a show. You’ll get to see author interviews, book previews, stay up to date with new releases, as well as dish about the book being focused on by the book club for the month. Check this out every other Friday!

Dark Horse Motion Comics – each week Dark Horse Comics puts out a motion comic. Some are presented in their entirety like The Secret, others are introduction to a series, or a one off. Either way, you’ll find comic book goodness here!

TableTop – This is my favorite show (followed closely by The Flog)! I love games, period. It doesn’t matter if they are video games, roleplaying games, or tabletop games! Here you can join Wil Wheaton and a different ensemble of players every other Friday who get together to play tabletop games! So far they’ve played Small World and Settlers of Catan. (I love, love, love Settlers of Catan!) They also include interviews with the cast, and the occasional gag reel. So far the players have been: Grant Imahara, Jenna Busch, Sean Plott, James Kyson, Jane Espenson, and Neil Grayston. This show can give you great ideas on games you can pick up to play with your friends and family.

Learning Town – doesn’t arrive until the Fall of 2012! But I’m looking forward to it because it’s going to be musical comedy that centers on learning!

I hope you can find a show or two that you like and want to tune into every week (or every other week), because these shows are awesome, and are paving the way for how we can watch our favorite programming in the future!

Spotify – Back Up Those Playlists!

Anyone who uses Spotify knows that they keep an online database of your playlists on the cloud so you can access them from anywhere simply by logging into your Spotify account.

But what if there’s a catastrophic server failure and the database gets wiped? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a backup of your beloved playlists?

It’s a simple procedure and also a pretty good idea. You never know what’ll happen, after all. So, open up Spotify, select the first song in your playlist and hit Ctrl-A to select all.

…now just drag them into an open Word or Open Office Writer document window and save the file somewhere safe.

Note: You’ll have to do this for each playlist you want to back up.

Each line is a link to the Spotify URL containing that particular track so you can re-add later!

I am almost ashamed to admit it, but I don’t know how to cut and paste or even what it means. I do know how to copy and paste, though, if that helps.

A long time ago, I got to talking to a representative from my local phone company about computers and copy and paste came up. I had no idea what it was, and she was speechless, dumbfounded, flabbergasted… well, she was surprised, anyway. “What do you mean? That’s the very first thing I did when I began to learn about computers!” Well, I apologize, ma’am, maybe it is. I thought the very first thing you did was take it out of the box…I digress. The point, is, Claire, there are many (sometimes it feels like too many!) things to learn about a computer; don’t ever be ashamed because you don’t know something, because I guarantee that there is something you know that a neighbor doesn’t, and vice-versa. You know what I mean?

Let’s start with concept. In fact, let’s integrate Copy and Paste and Cut and Paste and call all of it Cut, Copy, and Paste. That will help me not to have to type paste nine thousand times in a paragraph, and besides, they are basically the same thing, with only one difference between them.

It’s all about moving data, or pictures, or anything you want from one place to another.

Let’s say that you are typing a letter to your Aunt Abigail in Nottingham, England. (Aunt Abigail is 73 and set in her ways and will not have one of those “new-fangled computers” in her house, thus you write her by snail-mail.) A friend of yours has sent you an e-mail with a picture of his puppies in it (there are ten of them!) that you think that she would love, and you want her to have a copy of it. Thus, you copy the picture from the e-mail and paste the picture into your letter. Since you only copied it, you still have the picture in your e-mail, and Aunt Abigail is going to have a copy of it, too.

Now let’s say you are typing a letter to your Aunt Abigail (in Nottingham, England, blah blah blah) and you want to send her that same picture, only this time you don’t need to keep the picture and would just as soon cut it out of the e-mail; the e-mail (text) itself was the most important thing. You do the same thing as before; you go to the picture and copy it, and then paste it into your letter. This time, however, you cut the original picture out of your e-mail. Now you don’t have the picture any more, but Aunt Abigail is still going to get it because you copied the picture and pasted it before you cut it out of your e-mail.

Does this make sense? Let me make a point here: In the example above, when you copied and pasted the picture, you simply made a copy of it. You can always go get the picture again because you didn’t cut it out.

Claire, I’ll tell you something that I was ashamed to admit for a long time: I didn’t know that you copied something when you were cutting and pasting. I mean, why wouldn’t you put the word copy in there somewhere? This is why it is also called Cut, Copy, and Paste.

To Cut and Paste

Let’s take the picture that Aunt Abigail is going to be enjoying 2 months from now when she finally gets your letter.

Click anywhere in the picture and then go up to the top of your screen where it says File, Edit, View, etc. and click on Edit, and then click on Copy.

Now go to the place where you want to put the picture, put your cursor where you want it to go, and click onPaste.

Your picture will appear where you put your cursor.

You will follow this same process to Cut and Paste. This time, instead of clicking on Copy in the Edit menu, click on Cut.

Your first picture has disappeared because you have cut it, but it can now be pasted wherever you’d like it to be placed.

Let’s sum it up:

Copy and Paste: Take something from somewhere, make a copy of it and put it somewhere else.

Cut and Paste: Take something from somewhere, and a copy will be created that can be pasted somewhere else. But, what you take will also be removed from its original source.

That’s it!

I lost my icon in bottom right hand corner that shows I’m connected to the Internet. How do I get it back?

Good question, Winston!

Sometimes your Internet connectivity icon (located in the bottom right hand corner of your screen) can seem to disappear as if by magic. This is annoying when you want to find out information about your Internet connection like speed, packets sent and received or even just which provider you are connected too.

It’s solved quite simply, though. It’s different depending on which version of Windows you are currently running.

Windows XP:

– Click Start icon
– Scroll up to Settings
– Then click on Control Panel
– When the screen has loaded, click on the Globe icon called Network Connections

Now this part might be a little tricky if you use several Internet providers, but should not be a problem for most users.

- Right click on your preferred network then click Properties (It will be the one which has “Connected” status)
– When the new screen loads, make sure you are in the General tab.
– At the bottom, make sure the box is ticked which says “Show icon in notification area when connected”. While you are here, you can also choose to get your computer to start or stop informing you about limited Internet connectivity by ticking the other box.
– Click OK and the icon should now appear.

If your friend has a Windows 7 PC that is still connecting to the Wifi, she can view the stored password by left clicking on the wireless connection on the taskbar, right clicking on the network name she is connected to and then left clicking properties.

All About Birds: Great Blue Herons

One of the reasons I love spring and early summer is that there are hatchings…and baby birds to watch on bird cams all over the web!

The Great Blue Heron cam just had three eggs hatch, with an unconfirmed fourth (when I was there last), so hopefully there will be at least one more hatching to see.

What I love about this cam is that they offer a view of the nest from two angles. There is the main cam (the one with the chat area next to it) and then beneath it there is a second cam so you can check on the nest from another angle.

If you scroll down past the cams and the twitter feed, you’ll find information all about the Great Blue Heron. On the chat section, you’ll see a tab labeled Videos, if you click that you can watch the videos of the nest, egg laying, and highlights from the nighttime feed.

How does my computer send out e-mails to several names on my address list, saying it’s from me, when I am not on the computer or not even at home? It’s always just a link to something – don’t know what it is, because I’ve never clicked on the link. Is this a virus? What can I do to stop it from happening again?

Uh oh, Polly! It sounds to me like you have a Virus on your computer. Many viruses use this kind of technique because people are far more likely to open up e-mail from people they know. The links that are being sent out sometimes are as innocent as advertisements for products, but often are intended to infect other computers with the same virus.

I would recommend using an antivirus program, such as Panda Cloud antivirus, to clean your system. Panda can be downloaded at http://download.cloudantivirus.com/, and you should run it and do a full system scan. I would recommend after running it also running TrendMicro Housecall (It’s always good to run two different scans, as no antivirus is 100% effective) available at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Hi, Alex. Thanks for the excellent question.

Well, there are a couple of ways to do this. One, if you already have a record player, is to get what’s called a “dongle” to hook your record player to your computer via USB.

These will typically run you $10 or $20. Many of them, like the one pictured here, come with audio and video inputs (so that you can also transfer your old VHS tapes), as well as a 3.5 mm input jack so that you can hook your earphone output from a Walkman or other portable audio device, plus software so that your computer can communicate with it. You simply install the software, hook your record player’s audio output or headphone output (as long as it has the 3.5 mm headphone output) to the dongle and you’re good to go. If you need a 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm cable, or an adapter to change the larger headphone output to 3.5 mm, you can pick those up at any electronics store for a couple of bucks.

If, like many of us, you don’t have a record player, then you can get a record player that hooks directly to your computer via USB.

These will run you anywhere from about $60 to $100 and most include a 3.5 mm jack to plug your Walkman or headphone jack into so that you can also transfer your tapes.

Once you’ve got the music on your computer, you can then use your computer’s CD burner to transfer these to disc if you want.

Whether you’re trying to lose weight or someone just trying to keep up a healthy diet, MyFitnessPal is an app that you may consider trying out. The app, available for Android, iOS devices, and Blackberry, is a calorie counting program at its very core. You start out by setting up a profile, which includes entering current weight, goal weight, and other bits of vital stats that’ll help in determining accurate results. It will let you choose how many pounds you want to lose or gain per week, then calculate a daily calorie total based on the information you give the app. There are also tutorial videos and an FAQ included to help you get started.

Windows 7 Taskbar Hotkeys

I love hotkeys! In fact, I’m pretty sure that If I could assign one for every Windows 7 action, I definitely would! With that said, here are some quick hotkey combinations I stumbled across for the Windows 7 Taskbar.

Ctrl + Click on a grouped taskbar item
Cycles through the various windows of the group.

Shift + Right-click on a taskbar item
Show the window menu for the program.

iPad for photo editing on the fly

Sometimes, you want to finish your photos and upload them online immediately. This is particularly true of sporting events, functions, or even travelogues. With social networking getting increasingly addictive, uploading photos is the next big thing. However, not all photos are picture perfect. You need to adjust the exposure, brightness, contrast, color saturation, and maybe even crop out stuff you don’t want. But how can you do this on the fly without going back home and powering up your PC? Well, if you have an iPad, help is at hand. Smitten Kitchen

Besides video games, or lately, solitaire on my smart phone, there is nothing I like to procrastinate with like a food blog. It’s the end of the semester for me, and it’s also crunch time. To be honest, I was ready for summer break a month ago – but it’s finally almost here! (Two weeks to go!) And I’ve been doing a healthy amount of procrastinating. Hey, sometimes you need a break after writing a paper for eight hours straight, and when you forgot to eat during that time, there is nothing like a gorgeous food blog to remind you.

I am smitten with Smitten Kitchen! I feel like the author and I would get on fabulously. Deb writes with wit, knowledge, and the understanding that sometimes cooking is a the last thing you want to do (see herawesome recipe for pasta with garlicky broccoli rabe, if you want to understand what I’m talking about) and yet, you still manage to make something simple and scrumptious.

There are a couple of things about this food blog that are unique and make me love it more than freshly baked bread – okay not more, but close.

First, each recipe also links you back to the recipe that was posted on that day – going as far as five years back. So if you took a gander at the pasta recipe I linked above, scrolled all the way past the lovely photos, you’d find links for the previous years’ recipes. You could plan an entire week of meals just from those links sometimes. The pasta recipe links back to a dessert, a salad, another pasta dish, and then an Asian noodle dish.

Second, I adore that Deb lures you in with multiple images before offering a link to head to the recipe. Usually there’s an image of the finished product, and an image or two of the steps to get there.

And Last, but not least, on the main page if you scroll down you’ll come to Browse By section on the left side menu. It offers categories of recipes: spring, summer, fall, winter, vegetable, and fruit – all with pretty images that make you want to click into those categories to see what recipes lay in store for you.

I hope you’ll love Smitten Kitchen as much as I do. I can’t wait for break to start and the weather to get warm again so I can try her ice cream sandwich recipe!

Like many others, I use Google for searches, but it’s often difficult to find a result among the thousands of returns. Are there any ways to add more focus to a Google search?

Five Advanced Google Operators

We all use Google (well the majority of us do) more or less every time we sit down at our computer or browse the net on our phones. For many it’s an involuntary action, using Google as a step to finding sites they visit every day, after all, it’s much easier and quicker to type ‘Facebook’ into Google and click the top result than to manually type the full www address into the address bar.

But what about those times when you want to use Google to actually find something new? Sure, typing keywords into the search box is the obvious place to start, but if you want to be more specific and drill down into the results, there is also the option to append your search queries and keywords with operators that will filter the results more to what you want to see.

Here are 5 operators you may find useful when researching information on Google and don’t worry they’re not as technical or complicated as they sound!

1 The site: command

This command allows you to specify one particular site that you would like to search. So for the query above, we have specified the www.worldstart.com site and by appending the search string with ‘tips’ we will get results that are just from this site and only mention tips.

2 The inurl:command

This is a great command if you want to search a particular type of site, for example if you wanted to search for computing resources on educational domains you could use a query such as:

3 The define:command

This operator does exactly what it says, which is to define a term. If there is a word or service you’re not sure about, let Google offer you some suggested definitions from the web pages in its index.

4 The intext: command

The intext: operator is for those times when you want to find a specific phrase in the text of a website. Useful for searching for author’s names, or for very specific information about a particular subject. With this operator, Google will only return pages that have that exact phrase in the text of the site.

The above query returns results soup recipes, but only those that have the word ‘chicken’ in them.

5 The Convert operator (Not strictly an operator, but pretty cool all the same!)

Finally, this last one is more of a useful tool you may not know about than a useful operator for information retrieval. The ‘convert’ function will convert currency and give a result at the top of the search results. For example:

Hopefully these tips have opened up an area of search you never knew existed and possibly stoked the fires of curiosity with regards to what else can be achieved. Have fun combining operators and one final tip, if there is a query you find useful, make sure you save it as chances are you will be able to make use of it again.

MS Word: What Happened to the Normal View

If you’re using either Word 2007 or 2010 and preferred working in the Normal view, then you’re probably wondering what happened to it.

I’m sure you’ve investigated the View tab of the Ribbon and this is what you found:

While on the surface it seems that they’ve done away with the Normal view, the truth is that they just renamed it. Try the Draft view.

Feeling better?

Yeah, I though you might.

Of course the happiness will be short-lived when you save a file in the Draft view and then find that later it opens in the Print Layout view again.

Must...Have...Control

Do you use your Control Panel a lot? Are you the kind of person who is constantly “adjusting” things? Well, if you are, then you and I have a lot in common. Here’s a tip that will save us both some time.

Rather than clicking Start>Settings>Control Panel and then hunting for the appropriate icon in the control panel folder, why not put a cascading control panel right on your Start menu? Then, you just click Start, Control Panel, and select the appropriate utility from a menu. Much faster and much neater.

Xbox AND Kinect For $99?! (With A Contract!)

For awhile now phones and other mobile devices have tried to be more and more like gaming systems, providing better and faster games and graphics. Now it looks as if Microsoft is turning the tables and trying to make gaming systems more like phones. Microsoft, the creator of the popular Xbox, announced earlier this week it would sell its gaming system and the motion-sensor add on Kinect together for only $99. The bundle would include a 4GB Xbox 360 and Kinect sensor BUT only for those that commit to a 2 year, $15 per month, contract. The current retail price for the 4GB Xbox is $199.99 and the retail price for the Kinect is $149.99, bringing the total retail value to around $350. The retail price for the bundle when bought together is only $300.

The two year contract and subsidized bundle, which is something we often see in the mobile device market, is expected to be available as early as next week. The monthly subscription will most likely include Xbox Live Gold as well as potential content from cable and sports providers. The move by Microsoft is seen as a strategic move to put more Xbox’s in living rooms and have them serve as a full-fledged family entertainment system as opposed to just a gaming system.

So is the new deal worth it? The total cost with the two year contract and bundle would come to $459. The retail cost of the bundle by itself ($300) and a two year Xbox Live Gold subscription ($59/year) would come to $418. The big question will be if the extras included in the subsidized contract will be enough to justify the higher overall price tag.

The Kindle’s Disappearing Act

Target is giving the Amazon Kindle the boot. The popular retailer confirmed this past Wednesday that they will be phasing out Kindles and Kindle-branded products by the end of spring. Target released a statement regarding the move, stating that “we typically don’t discuss our relationships with vendor partners.”

The phasing out of the Kindle comes as a surprise, especially since the Kindle Fire was Target’s best selling tablet on last year’s Black Friday. One potential reason is the recent plan to include Apple mini-stores within various Target locations. These mini-stores will sell both iPhones and the Kindle Fire’s direct competitor, the iPad. It’s merely speculation but many believe that Apple’s new presence was putting pressure on Target to remove the Amazon products.

I just purchased a 50GB flash drive. I have Vista for an OS on a HP laptop. I always leave my thumb drive plugged in. After shutting down and doing a restart I cannot get the OS to fire up. All I get in the top left corner is a flashing dash. When I use the flash drive in my daughter’s laptop it works perfectly. Any ideas?

The answer is deceptively simple. Your computer is setup to be able to boot off external devices such as USB devices, and this is causing your computer to try to load an operating system from the USB flash drive. The way to fix this is to go into your computers BIOS and change the boot options to either not include USB devices or place them after the hard drive in the boot order.

How to access the bios will vary manufacturer to manufacturer, but usually when you first turn on the PC you will either hit F10, F2, Delete or F12 to access the BIOS configuration. Once in there, you want to change your boot order and make sure booting from USB devices is not selected or that it’s lower on the list than your hard drive.

When I went to use the Send-to option on a desktop file the other day, it was gone! Can I get it back?

Hi, Hal! Yes, you can get it back. First off, let’s go through a couple of things for the folks out there who are unfamiliar with the Send To option.

When you right-click a file or folder on your desktop, a menu pops up. This menu is called a context menu. In that menu, you have the option to send that particular file to a number of different places; it depends on your computer. Sometimes the Send To option disappears for some reason.

Below is an example of what mine looks like when Send To is in the menu and when it isn’t:

Stormtroopers 365

When I ran across this Flickr set I knew I had to share it with you. The photographer snapped a photo a day of stormtrooper action figures for a whole year. The images start on April 3 of 2009 and go to April 4^th of 2010. A friend of mine who knows I’m a knitter (and a Star Wars fan) sent me this picture of stormtroopers knitting via Facebook, and then I investigated the whole stream.

If you want to view the photo set in chronological order, you’ll need to start on page five and work your way back to the first page. If you don’t care about the order they were posted, you can just start right on the first page with any photo that strikes your fancy.

Besides the photo set, you can also find a video made with the action figures, and extra photos, by clicking More Details About Stormtroopers 365. By checking out Stormtrooper 365 Extras you can find deleted scenes, alternate versions, and behind the scenes photos from the Stormtrooper 365 series. The cool thing about the behind the scenes images is that they have detailed captions and even areas of the images that when you mouse over them show even more information about the shot like this image.

Navigating through the images is easy. Just select the image you want to start with and then you can use the Prev and Next buttons to flip through them.

I hope you’ll enjoy this whimsical stormtrooper themed photo set as much as I did!

I have been told that running a single program on a Core i5 system and a Core i7 system will result in negligible differences in speed. It was said that a core i7 system only really improves performance when running multiple tasks simultaneously. Is that true?

The difference between most core i5 and i7 systems (along with various other CPU lines) is the number of threads the processor can work on at the same time. The term “CPU Core” or “processors” is often used to mean the amount of threads a CPU can process, as some CPUs may have 4 real CPU cores inside of them, but are able to process 2 threads at the same time for each core, thus giving your computer the same power as a 8 core cpu.

Intel’s highest end i7 “Sandy Bridge” processors can handle 8 threads of information at the same time, while most i5 processors can only handle 4. AMD’s highest end processors support 8 threads of information at the same time, while the A6 and A8 processors support 4.

Older software (and even some more recent software) may not be designed to take advantage of multiple threads, and will function speed-wise very similar on the same Ghz rated core i5 and core i7 processor. On applications that are multi-threaded, there can be a small to very large performance increase, depending on how many threads the application can use. For example, Adobe Photoshop – which can utilize many threads – runs complex filters almost twice as fast on a core i7 than a core i5 processor.

Keep in mind that while you may only be running one application on the screen, you may also have a virus scanner, chat client, e-mail program and other system utilities taking up CPU time, and limiting how much is left over for your main application to use.

My existing computer is running Win XP Home Edition SP3, and I would like to transfer the data from this computer to a new computer running Win7. Is there any successful method for doing this?

Ted, the best way to do this that involves the least amount of effort is to use the Windows Easy Transfer tool. This is already preloaded on your Windows 7 computer, but you will need to download and install a copy of this utility for your Windows XP computer. You can find it here.

The Windows Easy Transfer tool will walk you through the steps needed to transfer your documents, photos, emails, internet favorites and more. In fact, about the only thing you can’t transfer are the programs that are installed on your XP computer. These will need to be installed again on your Windows 7 machine.

To make the physical transfer of data you will need an external hard drive, an easy transfer data cable, or a network that both computers can access. Once you have one of these ready, you can start to make your data transfer. Here’s how you do it.

Open the Windows Easy Transfer tool on your Windows 7 computer. You can find it by clicking Start, and typing easy transfer in the search box.

The welcome screen gives you a summary of what you can expect to transfer and reassures you that you are copying the data from one computer to another, and not deleting anything. So, click Next.

At this point, you need to choose your transfer method. As discussed before, you can use a hard drive, transfer cable, or a network to do this. For the purpose of this tutorial, I will go through the options for a hard drive transfer.

Once you select the hard drive option, (or any other for that matter), you need to tell Windows which computer you are working on. Seeing as we started on the Windows 7 computer, you will click This is my new computer.

The transfer tool will now ask if you have already performed the backup on your XP computer. As we have not yet done this, you will click No.

On the next screen, you will be prompted to install the Windows Easy Transfer tool on your source computer. We did that earlier, so you can click I already installed it on my old computer.

The final screen asks you to go back to your old computer and run the Windows Easy Transfer tool, so don’tclick Next, because you need to back up the files on your XP computer first.

On your Windows XP computer, launch the Windows Easy Transfer tool. You do this by clicking Start, thenAll Programs, and click Windows Easy Transfer for Windows 7.

The first couple of screens are basically identical to what you just went through, so click Next on the welcome menu, and select An external hard drive or USB flash drive as your medium of transfer. Windows will then ask you to choose which computer you are using. Be default this will only have one option as the transfer tool is for moving files from XP to Windows 7. Click This is my old computer.

At this point, the Windows Easy Transfer tool will scan the contents of the hard drive on your XP computer.

When the scan is finished, pay close attention to the results because they include the total size of the data you are transferring. When using a hard drive to transfer your data, you need to make sure that you have enough space for the files you want to move over. Then click Next.

The next menu gives you the option of password protecting your backup file. If you choose to do this, enter a password, and then confirm it by entering it again.

All you need to do now is select the location of the external hard drive that you want to save your XP data to. Click Open on the drive you want to save it to, and then Save to start the backup process.

When the backup is complete, you can unplug your external hard drive from your XP machine, and plug it into your Windows 7 machine. Now, click Next on the menu you still have up on your Windows 7 computer.

On the following screen, click Yes to confirm that you have your data backed up on the external hard drive, plugged in, and ready to transfer.

Now it is just a case of locating the backup file on your external hard drive so that Windows 7 can transfer your data onto your new computer. Select your external drive from the column on the left, click on the Windows Easy Transfer file, and then click Open.

Depending on the size of your data, the actual transfer could take a little while, but once it is done, your files will be safely transferred to your new Windows 7 computer.

CamScanner Mobile Phone Scanner

CamScanner turns your mobile phone into a portable scanner by using the camera to snap pictures of paper articles or documents (receipts, bills, etc.), and converting them to PDFs. It also includes an editor that offers crop and enhance features and–once the editing is complete–the document can quickly be sent via email or SMS, or uploaded to cloud storage.

My first thought, upon hearing about mobile scanners, was, “I can already photograph documents with my phone, why do I need a scanner?” However, in addition to the ease of conversion to PDF, the CamScanner editor creates a clear, crisp, and very readable image of text. Listening to the radio online is one of the most convenient features of the Web. Now, finding those radio stations has become even easier. How would you like to listen to any available radio station across the country? Do you have a favorite radio station that is just out of reach? Well for Internet Explorer users, I have found a great new tool. It is called the ALOT Radio App, and it is 100% FREE.

When I first read about this app I was a bit skeptical as to what it says it can do. Once I downloaded it, though, I was pleasantly surprised. With a simple click of the button I was able to listen to any local or nation wide radio station available on the web.

Do you want to create a fan page, but don’t know how? Well all you need to do is visit this site where you can set up a fan page for your favorite band, event, club, book, and more in minutes! All you need to do is create a Facebook fan page, and then head on over to Lujure to start customizing it today.

I suggest that you start by viewing the video on the main page. It shows you how the site works and how you can use it to make your fan site awesome in no time at all. This is a great solution for building a fan site because it doesn’t require you to learn code! All you have to do is drag and drop the items you want and then publish them to your fan page.

After watching the video, you’ll need to register an account so that you can save your changes. To do so, just fill out the form on the main page, click the green Create My Account button and you’ll be whisked away to the fan site creation area. It will want to F-Connect to your Facebook account, so you should probably register with e-mail account that you made the fan page with. If you haven’t made the fan page yet, it will f-connect you and then walk you through the page creation.

After you have a fan page set up, you can then start creating your tab. (I had to log in and then back out for it find the page I created through it, though.) Once it finds the page, click continue, then name the tab, and click continue. If it times out while creating the tab (this happened to me), log in again and it will be there. Click edit tab, and you can now drag and drop any of the features you want to have on your tab, as shown in the video. When you’re done click publish!

What I really like, as you’re adding widgets to your fan page, is that when you select each one it brings up the form you need to fill in to add the widget. I also like that hey also have a link to View the Tutorial, which will open a tutorial video that walks you through what you need to do for the current step. It’s very helpful!

This site does make it incredibly easy to make a fan page for your favorite bands, products, artists, etc. Go check it out today!
