Quick Folder Options

We've talked about hidden files before, right? Browse to the Control Panel, click folder options, blah, blah, blah. Practically drilled into our head by this point eh? Well, let's put the Windows Vista Search Bar to work then, shall we?

If you're switching back and forth between showing hidden files and re-hiding them, then taking a step out of the process should be welcome. So, instead of slogging through menus to get to the Folder Options, why not just type in “folder” in the Search Bar?

The very top selection that pops up will be “Folder Options”.

File Associations in Vista

Q:
How do I set my file type associations in Windows Vista? It was so easy in XP!

A:
This is a great question with a nice, easy answer! A lot of people lament the alternate routes they need to take to accomplish something that was once so easy in Windows XP. The biggest one I get has to do with file type associations. So, without any hesitation, here we go!

Go to Start>Control Panel>Default Programs>Associate a file type or protocol with a program

After a brief wait for the extension list to load you'll see this screen:

Just select a file type you'd like to associate and click "Change Program" at the top.

From here, all you have to do is choose a program to use when opening a file. If that desired program is not in the list, you can always browse to its location.

Rulers in Outlook 2007

When you're using MS Outlook 2007 to write a message that's more than just a bunch of text - maybe something more like a flyer announcement instead of a message - do you find yourself missing the ruler feature of Word or PowerPoint to help with the layout?

Never fear - that much desired ruler is closer than you think.

When you're working on the message take a quick look at the right side of the message window.

See it?

Yep - it's a little View Ruler button.

One click and the ruler is visible, another click and it's all put away.

Oh - and almost as a "bonus" - you'll find that same handy little button in Word 2007 as well.

Now that's what I call an easy way to make things measure up.

Restoring Previously Opened Folders

Are there folders you open up habitually every time you start up your computer? If so, did you know that you can set up your computer to open those folders automatically each time you boot up? Windows Vista users need only apply for this one!

Here's what you need to do to make it happen:

1.) First, open Windows Explorer or browse to any folder.

2.) Next, select "Organize" from the toolbar at the top of the window.

3.) Click on Folder and Search Options and the following window will open up on your screen:

4.) Now, click on the View tab.

5.) Check the option that says “Restore previous folder windows on log on."

6.) Click Apply and then OK.

Now, when you log off, restart or shut down Vista, it will automatically open the previously opened folders on the next boot. This is a great way to get a head start on what you were working on when you last left your system! Go forth and give it a shot!

Paint.net

From time to time, I have found myself needing a program for making graphics and pictures. I used to try and use the Paint program that comes with Windows, but I almost always find it to be lacking in features. Because of that, I have been looking for a paint program that has a lot more options and features. After looking for awhile, I came across a free program called Paint.NET. And let me tell you, this program has everything I could ever want! It's easy to use, it's easy to install and did I mention it's free? Let's check it out!

This is a very interesting health Web site! I suggest you start out by reading the preface to the newsletters, which you can find here or by clicking the “Please click here to read the instructions for proceeding to the Newsletters” link. Either way works!

Navigation is fairly straightforward. Just scroll down the page and click on the topic you would like to check out. You will find 107 articles (including the introduction) on various health topics.

I found that article 35 had some great tips on managing headaches. I’m prone to both migraines and tension headaches and the tips here were great. They seemed to really help, especially the warm shower where you use the warm water to ease the tension in your neck/shoulders.

You can also join the discussion forum. To do that, just click the giant link that says “Click Here to Join the Discussion Forum.” I bring this up, because I know a lot of you like to discuss this kind of information, as well as, ask questions and such. I'm also pointing this out, because the forum has a Recipes section, where you can share recipes and get healthy recipes to add your own collection!

I think there is a lot of great information here for you to take in. I, for one, like to gather as much information as I can before making decisions about diets, health care and even the things my doctor tells me to do. That way, I can choose what is best for me. Check it out today!

Where'd My Downloads Go?

Have you ever downloaded a file then couldn't find it? I usually download to my desktop or my downloads folder, but I do occasionally change folders when the files go over a certain size.

If you can't find a downloaded file in the usual place, try to download again and you'll see the location under the "Save in" field. Most browsers remember where your most recent download was saved. Hit "Cancel" once you know the location. In Firefox, all you need to do to find your recent download is go to Tools>Downloads (also accessible by pressing Ctrl+J) and right-click on the download in question and choose “Open Containing Folder”.

Blogs make a big impact these days and are fastly becoming a valid news outlet. For example, bloggers exposed forged documents used in a news story causing the demise of a prestigious network anchorman. Some bloggers are even being recognized by the news establishment as legitimate journalists. Priests and pastors encourage and inspire with daily devotional posts.

A Bar of a Different Color

When you create charts in MS Excel that have only one series of data, especially bar type charts, do you find yourself bored with it?

I mean… they always seem to be created in the same color.

Borrrring!

If you're looking to liven things up then why not do something about the color… or lack of it!

Now some of you may know that you can click on individual bars to change the colors manually but it sure would be nice if Excel would change them for us.

Fortunately, it will so let's take a look at how to make that happen.

Obviously, we need to have a chart created.

With that done you need to right-click on one of the bars and choose Format Data Series.

In older versions of Excel you'll see a dialog box like this:

Go to the Options tab and check the box for "Vary colors by point" and click OK.

If you don't care for the bar colors then you'll have to click on a single bar and change it manually. If you're going to end up doing this with a lot of them then you might as well go with the manual method from the beginning.

Should it be only one or two that you want to change this process combined with a few manual changes might be the way to go.

As for my Excel 2007 users when you choose Format Data Series your dialog box looks like this:

Go to the Fill category, check the box for "Vary colors by point" and then click Close.

If you don't care for the colors that the bars become then you'll have a bit more to do - but not much!

While you could choose to click on a single bar and manually change the color I'd like to recommend that you simply change the color scheme (Page Layout tab on the Ribbon, Colors button).

Using this method of color choices will ensure that the bars are color coordinated while still being different. You've just got to love those color schemes in Office 2007 - they can make life so much easier.

Anyway, regardless of your Excel version, multi-colored bars for a single data series really don't have to be that difficult to create… and it's so nice to have bars of a different color.

Signs of Infection

You all know there are millions of malware infections out there today. It seems as if there are tons of new infections that pop up everyday. In the past, I've written about how antivirus software and anti-spyware software don't always find all of the infections on your computer. After writing that article, I received several e-mails asking, "How do I know if I have a virus?" Well, today, I will cover some of the signs your computer will show if it's possibly infected with a virus or some other type of malware.

1.) Your computer slows down majorly. If your system slows down drastically, you may have an infection. Viruses and adware use resources on your computer. They can destroy files, send spam e-mail, redirect your browser and many other things that will slow your computer down.

2.) Internet browser crash. If your Internet browser stops working or shuts down often, you may be infected. Since most malware programs use the Internet to spread themselves, they will affect the performance of your browser. If your Internet browser just starts closing with no warning, you need to check for viruses.

3.) Random e-mails. Many viruses spread through e-mail. If you use an e-mail client, such as Outlook Express, MS Outlook or Thunderbird, a virus could infect it and start sending spam e-mail out to all your contacts. If you start to receive strange e-mails like "Message Undeliverable" or "Mailer Deamon," a virus may be sending e-mail with your address.

4.) Error messages at startup. If you start receiving error messages when you turn your computer on, you may have some type of malware infection. Malware programs usually turn on at startup and they sometimes cause errors, so you need to keep an eye out for that.

5.) Things look "strange." I know that seems a little vague, but sometimes you open something and it just looks funny. If you didn't install something or make a change to your system, there's no reason why something would change. Computers don't make decisions on their own. If something has changed and you didn't initiate it, you should scan for viruses and malware.

Those are the five most common signs of an infection. Many of them may indicate a virus, but that doesn't necessarily mean you're infected.

Some of the signs could indicate a hardware issue or a program conflict. As a general rule, if you know of a recent change that caused the actions, it's probably not a virus. If the signs happen for no reason at all, you should be concerned and get your computer checked. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!

Alzheimer’s Association – Brain Tour

Are you ready to go on a tour of your brain?

This site provides an amazing slideshow of how your brain works and then how
Alzheimer’s disease affects it.

There are seventeen slides in all. The first seven show how your brain works. I wish I had found those slides earlier so that I could have used them to study for my first psychology exam where we learned how the brain functions. I particularly liked the neuron forest; it’s such a great example of how neurons connect!

The next nine slides show you how Alzheimer’s changes the whole brain. They take you step by step through each part of the brain, and show the full scale of the damage that the disease does to the brain.

The seventeenth slide is the Act slide. Basically they’re trying to get five million people registered in the fight against Alzheimer’s. They’re not asking for money, they’re just asking you to step up and be counted as someone who wants to fight against this awful disease. When I was there they already had over a million champions.

The last slide is the credits/links slide. There you can find links that will take you to more sites where you can get information about Alzheimer’s, as well as, some interactive brain maps, and a whole brain atlas.

Alzheimer’s disease scares me, and I hope I never have to face it, but being educated on the subject helps take some of that fear away.

Autoresponders

An autoresponder for e-mail sends a message back every time a message is received. This is great for when you're going to be out of the office or away for awhile on vacation, but there are some risks associated with doing this, too.



See, when you have your e-mail program set to automatically respond to every message you get, you send back to everything, including spam messages. All a spammer needs to know is that your e-mail address is valid to open the floodgates for even more spam, and your autoresponse tells them that! In other words, be careful when using autoresponders, or better yet, avoid them altogether!

Q:
What do those version numbers, like 1.0.1 mean?

A:
To find the version number of a program, just click Help, then find "About..."

Now, let's say we have program with a version number of 6.1.2

The first number (6) represents the "major" version number. Normally these are only updated if there has been lots of major changes to a program.

The next number (1) represents a minor update. Maybe a feature or two was added to the program, but the overall program remained the same.

The third number (2) represents a bug fix. Our example shows that version

6.1.2 has had 2 bug fixes so far.

That's the gist of it. Some programs use letters rather than numbers, especially for minor update and bug fixes.

Additionally, it's open to interpretation by the programmer (or the marketing department ;-) as to whether the current update constitutes a major version change or just a minor enhancement.

Please Don't Reply to Me

Have you ever been asked to send an e-mail message out on behalf of someone else?

Maybe a boss, colleague or friend who just aren't in the right place, don't have the time or access to the information and you do.

So they ask and you'd like to (or in the case of your boss, have to) help out.

The problem is that when the message goes out since you sent it you'll get the replies. You did a favor and now you've got a clogged Inbox that you have to redirect to the correct person.

Not exactly a great outcome for you.

Is there any way to still be a Good Samaritan without the extra work it causes down the road?

Why yes, there is - you just need to know how to set the message "Reply To" address to the correct person - and that's exactly what we're going to look at right now.

To begin, regardless of your version of Outlook, we need either a new or forwarded message opened for editing.

If you're using an older version of Outlook then you need to locate the Options button on the Standard toolbar. (You can also find it in the View menu.)

For my Outlook 2007 people you need the Direct Replies to button located in the More Options section of the Options tab of the Ribbon.

Once you've clicked the button for your program you should all be looking at the Message Options dialog box.

About halfway down you'll find the Delivery Options section.

Select the "Have replies sent to" checkbox and enter the appropriate address in the field. (The Select Names button will get you into your address book for a quick address entry.)

Click Close.

Compose your message and send.

It's that easy - the message is sent out and whenever a recipient replies it will go straight to the person who actually needs to see it!

Setup An Ad-hoc Wifi Network for File and Internet Connection Sharing

Are you one of those people who does not want to invest in a Wifi router unnecessarily just for the luxury of being able to carry the laptop around the house? Do you have a desktop and a laptop and would like to have a Wifi network to connect to? Are you a fellow gamer, who would like to play a round of Counter Strike without the need for cables or an already existing wi-fi network?

Well, rest assured, you have come to the right place.

This guide will teach you how to go about creating an ad-hoc wifi network using Windows Vista. Such a network can be utilized for file sharing, internet connection sharing, multiplayer gaming etc.

Steps to Create the Ad-Hoc Network

1.) Open the “Network and Sharing Center” from the Control Panel. Alternatively right click on the Network icon in the System Tray and open it.



2.) Click on “Setup a Connection or Network”

Select “Setup a Wireless Ad Hoc (Computer to Computer) Network.

3.) The following screen explains what an Ad Hoc Wireless Network is. It provides some information about the network. Read (if interested) and then click on “Next”



4.) Choose a suitable name for the network. (And make sure its a name which you will easily recognize)

Choose a security type. I normally leave it on WPA2-Personal which is considered an advanced version of WEP. Although there is an option to use “No Authentication (Open)”, an Unsecured Wi-Fi Network is an invitation for trouble and should be avoided if possible. (Ideally, the only occasion where it should be utilized if authentication cannot be performed for some unknown reason and a network is absolutely essential.)



5.) Choose a suitable password. Again, ensure that your password is a strong one and avoid obvious choices. There are too many instances of people utilizing an unsuspecting person’s wi-fi network to commit cyber crimes on the internet without leaving a digital trail.

6.) Click on “Display Characters” (to verify password) and “Save Network” (So that the computer retains these settings)

7.) Finally, click on “Turn on Internet Connection Sharing” if you would like to have that option.



Connecting to the Ad-Hoc Network

Connecting to the Ad-Hoc network is very simple, and the process is almost identical to connecting to any wi-fi network.

Once the target computers are in the range of the network (within 30 feet), the network would be visible.

1.Open Network and Sharing Center,
2.Click on Connect to a Network,
3.Obtain list of Available Networks,
4.Select the above created Adhoc Network,
5.Enter the security code, and finally
6.Save the Network for future use.

Capturing Young Family Portraits



Having a photo session with a family? Get them together, place them right, and hit the button when they are all ready to stay in resonance with each other for that single fraction of a second.

1.Generate ideas impromptu.

Go for the photo-shoot with just overall structures and plans, and not with a step by step procedure. Be open-minded. You do not know the sort of people you will be handling during the session. So you do not require a rigid plan. Flow with the course of events and intersperse your ideas in them. You cannot always forecast the scenario.

2.Reach-out to the kids. Give them their niche.



Get across to the kids and ascertain that they are relaxed and hearty. Crack jokes and keep them entertained. When a child gets a little difficult, get the parents to follow them till they calm down and come back to a light mood. A series of shots now with the parent and the child will feel more natural. If you show up at the photo session with a bunch of balloons and chocolates, they will be overjoyed. They will become easier to handle and you can prepare them for the photo-shoot. Ask the parents to keep snacks and interesting food handy, too. They will instantly cheer the kids up.

3.Expert illumination is a must.



There is a time during each day when we are in the best moods and are completely relieved of all the stresses and worries. The best time to click portraits is either early in the morning or in the evening. Afternoons must be avoided because the sun is at its zenith, and it scorches us directly making us partially jittery and inactive; we may not be able to open our eyes completely to look into the camera, and might narrow our eyes or even squint instead. It causes sweat and can cause dark circles and reddened skin. A cloudy day with only a few rays of the sun reaching you could also be a superlative concept. The brightness of the sun in its optimum extent can be made use of as soon as it rises or when it is just about to set. The warmth radiating from the sun will bring out glow in the faces of the people, and more importantly the children will be happy to come out in the open and might even yield to most of the things you suggest.

4.Tidy the place up.

A spotless surrounding will make your pictures look absolutely delightful. But that doesn’t mean it should be so clean and perfect that it must end up looking like a doctors office. At the same time, you don’t want a dirty clothes, socks or a strewn shirt lurking around in the photo. Clean up the place.

5.Freshen the faces.

Tell the family members to look fresh during the shoot especially the children. You don’t want their hair all unkempt or them wearing just one shoe and the other gone missing. Wipe the faces clean and bright. You don’t want shirts hanging out loose or faces with dried up tears.

6.Pick diverse locations. Keep the films rolling.



You need not always get the first shot right. You have to keep clicking pictures and only some of them will actually have all the faces caught in that immaculate grin. Take a few hundred pictures in just a one hour session with a family. Getting them to sit at their respective places and clicking a few photos every time you make the slightest change, can be one of the few adjustments. Keep changing the location of the shoot. You can click pictures in the lawn or by the fountain or also in front of the house as it is an imposing building. A change of location also keeps the children happy and interested so they won’t get restless so soon. Grab the right expressions. They shouldn’t close their eyes in the photo. Take a series of pictures and pick out the best ones.

7.Keep it candid and easy.



Subject the kids toa change in locale. They tend to be obedient during the initial part of the shoot and they become difficult later on if the surroundings get boring. Encourage the children to stay happy and make the shoot interesting for them. Don’t assert too much. You will fail to get the priceless smiles from them. Don’t compel them to give some particular pose. Not just the children, but adults, too. Posing looks artificial. A portrait looks more real when the smiles and body language aren’t feigned. Keep the atmosphere relaxed. Try and get the compulsory shots during the start of the shoot.

8. Smile please!



Asking them to say ‘cheese’ is boring. It is a cliché. Instead of that, ask them a question to which they will say an answer and you can snap the grin. Like you can ask them ‘Who is going to get an ice-cream now?’, and they will say ‘Me!’ Or you can pick the name of a person in the family whose name has the ‘ee’ sound and ask them to shout the name, like say, ‘Billy!’ or ‘Melissa!’.

This site saved my life during a group project I had to do for one of my classes where we had to make a group presentation. It was impossible to make our schedules coincide so instead I went hunting for a solution. We were able to drop off each of our portions of the presentation so that I could put it together.
 
I recommend that you start by checking out the video on the main page, as it explains all about the site and how it works.
 
To get started creating a drop, just type in a drop name at the end of the drop link in the choose a new name field.
 
For example it will look like:

When you click it the “abc123df” will disappear and you can type in your own name for your drop location.  
 
Once you’ve input a name it will look like:
 
http://drop.io/yournamehere
 
The nice thing is that as soon as you type in a name for your drop it will let you know if that name is already taken. If it is taken you can do one of two things; you can add a number to the end of what you’ve already typed, or you can completely change what you’ve named it.
 
Next you’ll click the Select Files button, to choose what you want to upload to the drop point you’re creating. Once you’ve done that click the green Create a Drop button.
 
It will then ask you to create a password and provide a recovery e-mail address. Once you’ve done that click the Save Settings button. It will let you know if it was successful and then start uploading the files that you’ve selected.
 
For your group members to access the drop they’ll need the URL you created for the drop, with that they should be able to get the file and add more files to the drop.

Instead of right-clicking and going to “properties” to get the skinny on a file or folder, try this:

Hit Alt + Enter on a highlighted object to see its Properties, like file size, date created or last modified, and what program is associated with the file. You can also just hold the Alt key down and double-click the item.

OK, today's title is a little different than our normal fare - but something everyone really needs. It's called Quicken's Willmaker Plus 2008 and it's a great way to make sure your wishes are followed when the time comes. I know, no one wants to think about going to the information superhighway in the sky, but everyone's time does indeed come. We all have a responsibility to make sure our loved ones don't need to go through any more grief than necessary, and this software can really help.

We all know what happens. Getting a lawyer is sometimes way too expensive, so many people are left without any type of will when the inevitable time comes. This software not only covers standard wills, but also has extensive living will documentation. When I was only 30 years old, my wife and I had a will drawn up by a lawyer, and it was a solid $600 just for a basic "who-gets-what" type of will. Q: What does the term “Pinned” mean?

A:
In the world of computers, the term “Pinned” is a lot like the physical act of pinning something up on a cork board. In our case, it refers to items within a window that are kept in the same place for easy access. Programs, applications, web sites, etc. can all be stuck up in a menu and accessed at your leisure depending on the program.

For Example:

The Windows Vista Start Menu is divided into two sections. The top half of the menu is reserved for pinned items. Because I use Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver almost every day, I keep them pinned; making them accessible at the click of a mouse at any time.


How does one do this? Simply right-click on an icon on your desktop and choose "Pin to Start Menu". It's just that easy!



The bottom section of the Start Menu is reserved for frequently used programs, or programs that I use on a regular basis. Though this may sound the same as a pinned menu, the items on the list change dynamically based on what I've been apt to do lately. So if I've been using the calculator a lot, it's icon will show up, but if I stop using it for awhile and make use of something else, that icon will show up.

Right Here, Right Now, Really Quickly

If you're a person who uses PowerPoint for presentations on a regular basis then I'm sure that at some time it's been necessary to start a show (or restart a show) from a slide that isn't the first one.

Whether it's just where this particular discussion should start of it something happened to put you back into the program window instead of the slide show itself… the problem is that you've got people looking at the display and they're seeing the slide in the Normal view.

You can just feel the disconnect happening. They see this as a break and being to fidget and a few quiet discussions begin around the room.

The question is… How do we get back to the presentation from where we are as fast as possible?

The answer is simply Shift + F5.

Yep that's it… if you quickly use Shift + F5 the show will begin again from the current position - without delay.

No fumbling with the mouse to find a tiny button, menu or tab of the Ribbon to restart the show.

Shift + F5 will put your presentation back on track from right here, right now and really quickly.

Lost Documents

Have you changed your Internet Service Provider (ISP) lately? If so, during the transition, did you happen to lose some e-mails you wanted to keep? Or, how about this: you downloaded or saved a document and for the life of you, you can’t find it on your PC. Either way, don't panic, because all is not lost! Actually, nothing is lost, because your documents are there somewhere. It’s just a matter of knowing how and where to look for them.

Awhile back, my daughter did not come home from school at her usual time. I called the school, which called her bus and they reported that she had never gotten on the bus. She was missing. So, in working with the school and the local police department, we started looking for her in the places where she ought to be (for example, the school, our street, etc). We then expanded our search to places she was not expected to be, but might have wound up for some odd reason (like the recreation center). Now, please note that I only use her as an example here, because she did in fact arrive home safe and sound later on.

This relates back to your documents (be it an e-mail, a document you downloaded from the Internet or an e-mail you received) in that neither my child nor your documents have vanished off the face of the earth. Sometimes documents (and people) just wind up in odd places!

Unless you're using a Web based e-mail account (like Google, Hotmail or Yahoo!, for example), you probably have a POP (Post Office Protocol) e-mail account. There are tons of wonderful technical explanations in books and on the Web about how this works, but all you really need to know for our purposes here is that if you use a Web based account, your messages are stored on the Web, whereas with a POP account, they are probably stored on your PC. That way, you can still view them offline.

This also means that they are still somewhere on your PC, even if you change your service provider. For example, when I switched from Infinet to Time Warner Cable, I wasn't readily able to see my old e-mails from the Infinet account anymore. And that became a big problem when years later, I needed something from them.

The method for recovering lost POP e-mails is the same as the method for recovering missing documents, so let’s address that first. I used this method when a spreadsheet a co-worker had created for tracking certain statistics at work was saved, but no one could find it.

Now, when my daughter went missing, we started looking in the places we thought she ought to be and you do much the same with a missing document. Did you save it in your My Documents folder? Did you save it on your desktop? Did you save it on the C: drive? Is it on an auxiliary storage device, like a flash drive or CD ROM? Once you’ve ruled out the places it could have gone, you’ll have to expand your search, but just like it wasn’t practical for the people looking for my daughter to ask every single girl in every single business in town if she was my daughter, you don’t want to start opening every single folder on your hard drive. Some of them aren’t even easy to find. They’re just in strange places, like subfolders of subfolders and with names like “XZH67FGHY.” Don’t ask me why!

I had to give the police a description of my daughter (height, hair color) so that they would know what to look for. You also have to give your computer a description of what you’re looking for. Luckily, there’s a place to do that and an easy way to do that. Let's check it out!

Click on Start and choose Find (or it might say Search).

Next, choose Files or Folders. You should then get a screen that looks like this:

Patience will be a virtue here. Unless you remember the exact name of your document, you’re going to have to employ a few ways of describing your document. Let’s start by assuming you are looking for a Word document. First, check the Look in field to make sure it’s set to search the entire hard drive (C:), just like above. If it’s set for the A: drive (floppy) or Documents, for example, your computer will only look in those places and you’ve already looked there, so it would just be wasting your time.

In the Named field, you really don’t have to have the exact name of your document. For example, I’ve called this document “Wherefore Art Thou,” so let’s look for anything with “Wherefore” in the title. But, and this next part is important, since you’re not searching for an exact title, you want the computer to find anything that has that word in the name. This is critical when you’re looking for a document with a name you’re unsure of. You do this by adding *.* at the end of your search term. This tells the computer to search for anything that has this word anywhere in the document name. Let’s try to find this document.

Notice how I’ve typed the description into the Named field. Next, click Find Now.

Looky there! It found it. You can now open that document by double clicking on its name.

Now, what if you don’t know the name of the file? What if you're looking for an Excel spreadsheet that was saved before it got a proper name or maybe it was downloaded from an e-mail and you don’t know where it went?

Well, you can find types of files by using the same Named field, but instead of putting in a description of the document name, you can put in a description of the document type. You can do this by clicking on the Advanced tab in the Find All Files box and choosing your file type from the drop down menu.

Let’s see if I have any kicking around.

Quite a few, it turns out! It’s just a matter of checking the most likely ones out to see where the one you want is.

Now, it’s time to find a lost e-mail. Let’s say I was looking for an old Infinet e-mail (which had the extension of “infi.net” from my friend Sam).

This time I’ve chosen E-mail File from the drop down list:

I’ve also gone back to the Name and Location tab and entered “Sam” into the Containing Text field, because more than likely, the e-mail is probably not named “Sam,” but it will have his name in it.

Let’s see what we get!

I got nothing! Okay, I know they’re on there somewhere, so it's time to expand the search some more.

To make a long story short, you will need to keep expanding your search until you start getting some hits. They are there, I promise! I finally just searched all file types for my old Infinet e-mail username “nealshaw” and take a look at what I found:

Seventy files! Most of them are cookies, but several are folders in which the e-mail I'm looking for probably lies. Here’s what I found in my Netscape Users folder:

Mail files, including the Sent ones, the Trash ones (the ones I thought were gone!) and of course, my old Inbox. When I double click on one of those, it will ask me which program I want to use to open them. There are a ton of e-mails stacked in there, it turns out, so I chose to use WordPad or Word. Please keep in mind that this can be a time consuming process, especially if you have a lot of files, etc. on your PC and have been using it for years, like I have. But, all in all, the files are there. If I still haven’t found “Sam” at this point, I can wait until the e-mails are all converted to a Word or text file and search the document with Ctrl + F. (They were in there, by the way!)

One final note: With all the stuff you’ve found in your search, it might also have occurred to you that there are some files you really want, but are gone. I’m sure you’ve heard by now that deleted files don’t just disappear, they get relegated to some far corner of your PC until they are overwritten. It’s sort of like if you have a CD ROM of embarrassing pictures you can’t stand, but your kids think are hilarious. You can’t just throw it away and hope they don’t find it before the trash pick-up day. You need to drive over it with your car a few times until it’s broken into small pieces!

If you find a file of old e-mails or other items you want to be truly gone, you will need to ensure that it gets overwritten multiple times. If that's what you're looking for, check out this Web site. A program called Scar 5 will overwrite your specified files about 25 times. It’s pretty near impossible to recover them after that! Do use this with caution, however. This is a case where you need to be very specific, because carelessness here could wipe out your hard drive.

My daughter was safe and sound on the bus she was supposed to be on. (The driver just hadn’t seen her). She didn’t drop off the face of the earth and neither did your files or e-mails. We found the Excel file at my job by doing a search for all Excel files and it tuned up in a folder with some name none of us had ever heard of before!

When you do download or save files, it pays to really pay attention where you are putting them. Downloads often wind up in temporary folders, which you can track down by searching files with “Temp*.*”, but it's good to be a little more specific. You can also practice by trying to find all the pictures on your PC sometime by using the File Type drop down for JPEGs. Just a thought.

Volume Control

Ever lost your volume icon? You go to change your volume by using the little icon that sits in the bottom right hand corner of your desktop (right next to your clock) and the icon was somehow missing? What are you supposed to do now?

If you're using Windows Vista, then right-click on a blank area of your task bar and select "Properties". Under system icons, make sure there's a check next to "Volume". Click OK and you're done!



If you have XP, to get the icon back, go to Start, Control Panel and click on the Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices link. Next, click on Sounds and Audio Devices. A box will appear that has different tabs. Make sure the Volume tab is selected and under the Device volume section, make sure the box that says "Place volume control icon in the taskbar" is checked. Then when you want to change your volume, you can just click on that little icon and perfect your sound.

While in this screen, you can also change up your speaker volumes and experiment with your Sounds, Audio, Voice and Hardware settings.

Q:
I know this is a little silly, but can you give me some tips on cleaning a mousepad? Mine is awful looking, but I don't want to ruin it in the process. Please help!

A:
Just like a mouse, the mousepad can easily collect dirt, dead skin and oil. After all of that sits in place for awhile, it can start to make your mousepad look a little grimy and gross. Listed below are the steps you need to follow to keep your mousepad looking spic and span!

1.) Most of the mousepads out there today have a spongy, foamy material in them. Then on top of that, they are usually covered in a thin fabric or a plastic top. Investigate as to which material yours is made out of before you go any further. That will determine which way you can clean the mousepad.

2.) Now, if the material is a fabric, you can use a slightly moist washcloth and a little bit of shampoo. (Make sure you're using a cloth that you don't mind getting dirty). This works out well, because chances are, you already have shampoo on hand and it's a gentle cleaner that works perfectly on different fabrics.

3.) On the other hand, if your mousepad has a plastic top, spray a bit of your household cleaner on it. Make sure it's a mild kind and you only need to use a small amount. Use a piece of cloth or a sponge to then clean the pad. Even dish soap or some shampoo would work for this type of mousepad too.

4.) Once you choose which method you'd like to use, go ahead and clean the mousepad as best you can. When you're done, make sure all of the cleaners are rinsed off.

5.) When the whole thing is rinsed, use a towel to dry the mousepad. Just pat the towel gently until the surface feels dry.

6.) Now, even though it may feel dry, there's probably still some water soaked in, so let it sit overnight or as long as you need to. Make sure it is completely dry (even all the way into the foam) before you start using it again. Also, if your desk is wooden, you'll want the mousepad to be 100 percent dry, because the water could ruin the surface of your desk as well.

The only other thing you want to be careful of when you're cleaning your mousepad is the color of it. If you think the water might ruin the colors, test it out first. Just moisten a corner of the mousepad to see what it does. It's better to ruin just a corner, rather than the whole thing. Also, if your mousepad is coming apart at the seams or if it is stained pretty badly, you may just want to go out and purchase a new one. They're relatively inexpensive and it's better to have a good place for your mouse to sit than to keep an old mousepad hanging around.

From Beginning to End and Back Again

Editing a PowerPoint presentation? Need to move quickly from one end to the other? Maybe a way that doesn't involve a bunch of scroll bar and mouse work?

No problem...

Provided you do not have the cursor actively in a text box, the Home key will move you to the first slide of the presentation.

As you can now guess, the End key will zip you off to the last slide of the presentation.

It's important to note that if you use the Home or End keys while in a text box, you'll simply move to the beginning or end of the current line of text. Combine them with the Ctrl key and you'll simply move to the beginning or the end of the text box.

So, the question becomes what do you do if you are in a text box and want to make one of these quick moves?

Here's a quick answer: Use the Esc key. With my cursor actually in the text for editing purposes I had to use the Esc key twice. The first pulled the focus from the text to the text box and the second time moved the focus from the text box to the slide itself.

Once the slide is the selected element you can then use either the Home or End keys to finish.

There you have it. A quick way to go from the beginning to the end and back again!

Make the Most of Your Wireless Router



When it comes to connecting to the Internet, three options are the most popular. You can use a dialup connection, which is the slowest kind. A wired broadband connection will let you browse the web faster but it still means that you’ll be plugged into a cable in the wall. In other words, you’re bound to a laptop or PC in a fixed location -you can’t move around while you work. Wireless networks, on the other hand, allow you to be mobile. Set up a router in your workspace and you’re free to move around and access the Internet within the coverage area. But maximizing or optimizing that coverage area is where most people make mistakes, limiting their mobility. Follow these simple steps to help with a greater coverage area and better wireless connectivity.

It’s just a matter of understanding the simple mechanics behind the system. A router emits a signal that enables you to connect to the Internet. Often, people associate a poor signal with a faulty router, when that may not be the case. A signal will not improve if you’re trying to fix something that isn’t broken!



Location, location, location!

If a wireless connection throughout your home or office is what you're going for, placing a router in the corner of a room may not be the best thing to do. Instead, place the wireless router at the center of the workspace for maximum coverage area at an even signal strength. Metal objects tend to hamper signal strength. So don’t put your router on a filing cabinet! Also, keep your router away from thick brick walls or large objects that could interfere with a wireless signal. The simple rule: don’t place obstacles in the path of a signal that it needs to penetrate before reaching you. By the time the signal makes it past those hurdles, what you have is a weak signal that isn’t much help.

An add-on for a router

Sometimes, your router may need some help -that extra “picker upper”, especially if it’s an omnidirectional antenna. This is the most common kind of antennae that come with wireless routers and true to their name, emit wireless signals in all directions. “Omni” means “all” in Latin. But if you’re only going to be working in one direction of the router, placing it at the center won’t make much sense because much of the signal will be lost to the surroundings. Instead, what you might try doing is getting an HGA antenna that emits a narrow, focussed signal in one direction. That way, you ensure that the complete signal is used. But be sure to check that the router you use comes with a removable antenna before you make this switch.

Wireless interference

Thick brick walls and large objects aren't the only culprits of signal interference. Other wireless gadgets commonly found around a home or office like cordless phones, garage door openers and television remotes function through radio signals that most likely emit the same frequency as your wireless router. This can interfere with the strength of your wireless signal. Place your router away from such wireless equipment or adjust the frequency of the wireless router so that these signals don't interfere with each other.

Similar but not the same

Just like figuring out why you’re signal strength may not be as good as it should depends on factors like location and the kind of antenna you use, rather than a fault with the router, so does signal strength as distance increases between your computer and the wireless router. As you move your computer further away from the wireless router, the signal will inevitably weaken. To boost signal strength at the periphery, a repeater, or Wireless Access Point (WAP), and not another router, may just be the answer.



Stay within the family

Familiarity doesn’t always breed contempt. At least not in the case of wireless routers. Although this is not a fixed rule or guaranteed to affect a router's performance, buying a router and network adapter of the same brand may be a good idea. Often, manufacturers produce routers and network adapters that are compatible and may increase signal strength. Alternatively, routers and adapters of different brands may (though not always) conflict and result in weakened signal strength.

It’s time for an update

Something old or in less than working condition will cost more to maintain than just buy a new one. Almost always. The same applies for a wireless router. That’s not to say that you need to border on the brink of bankruptcy buying the latest technology. But it couldn’t hurt to visit the website of your router’s manufacturer from time to time. Downloadable firmware can fix old problems, improve your router’s performance and increase signal strength. Also, update the firmware of your network adapter. More serious problems however, may require more serious solutions.

Don’t always blame the router

As mentioned earlier, the less than satisfactory performance of your wireless connectivity may not be because of the router at all. Replacing or upgrading the router will not solve an unrelated issue. In addition to all of the above, you’re computer should also be well-equipped to receive these signals. Here, a reflector or wireless USB network adapter may help.



Do It Yourself Reflector

Treat this as a very useful craft project. Like a high gain antenna, a reflector can direct the existing signal, allowing you to take advantage of the signal the router is providing. Unlike an antenna, a reflector actually reflects an emitted signal in the desired direction. A tinfoil reflector acts like a mirror and is something that you can make easily. All you’ll need is some tinfoil, cardboard and sticky tape.

1. Cut a piece of cardboard into a 15 x 10 cm rectangle and wrap it completely in tinfoil.

2. Cut an additional piece of cardboard (or paper) into a circle. Bend the shape slightly.

3. Slip the antenna into the paper figure. The mechanism will serve as a dish to receive signals as well as reflect and redirect them.

IE Favorites Center Shortcut

I throw a little too much love towards Mozilla Firefox, so today I'm going to include some Internet Explorer goodness to try and balance stuff out. So, let's talk a little bit about favorites, shall we? Internet Explorer has something called the Favorites Center, where all of your most loved and cherished websites can be stored and accessed. Perhaps you knew about that already, eh? Great! That means that these Favorites Center shortcuts will add to your repertoire and your browsing prowess will be upgraded, indeed!

Is there a way to make my Desktop icons bigger?

A:
You can use this tip to make them bigger or smaller. I'll also show you how to change the label font and its size.

Windows XP:

Right-click the desktop and choose "Properties" Select the "Appearance" tab then click the "Advanced" button.

Under "Item", pick "Icon" from the drop down list. Under "Size" use the arrow keys to make the icons bigger or smaller (you could also type in a number).



Click "Apply" to make changes. If you don't like how it looks, follow the procedure again.

You'll also notice "Font" and "Size". This is where you can change these settings. If you make large fonts, you may need to use a smaller font to prevent overlapping.

If you don't like the way the icons are spaced you can always change that too. Under "Item" select "Icon Spacing (Horizontal)" or "Icon Spacing (Vertical). Choose a number slightly bigger than your icon size and it will adjust the space.

Windows Vista:

For all of you Vista users out there, making your desktop icons bigger is as easy as...well, this is really easy.

Go to your desktop, hold the CTRL key and use the scroll wheel on your mouse. This will make the icons bigger and smaller at the flick of a finger! You can also just right-click your desktop, and under "View" there are options for small, medium and large icons.

Back Up Your AutoCorrect

Have you invested a lot of time tweaking the AutoCorrect lists in your MS Office programs?

Are you looking for a way to back up those lists?

Well, the trick is to know what type of file it is you're looking for.

The "secret" is to know that AutoCorrect files have an .acl file extension.

With that information, you'll need to run a search in Windows for these files. I searched on my system and found several of them in a variety of locations, so you too will need to run a search. My latest search found my newly saved files - therefore the custom list I had created - at this location C:\Users\April\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office. While I can't guarantee the location of yours, it's a place to start.

Once found, you can include them in whatever backup routine you usually follow hopefully saving some time and energy later... should you need them again!
