File Extensions

Q:
There certainly are a lot of file extensions out there! Is there a place where I can get familiarized with some of the more obscure ones?

A:
No matter how much computers seem to change over the years, you can always count on there being file extensions. Now, you may already be familiar with some file extensions, such as: .jpeg, .gif, .html and .doc. but here’s a Web site that’s perfect for those times when you run across one you don’t know, like: .bat, .otf, .xml or .sqm!

Just go to:http://www.file-extensions.org/

There are several ways to navigate this site. You can use the search engine to look up an extension you don’t know, you can use the alphabetical listing at the top of the page to choose by letter, you can browse by symbol, number and unknown extensions or you could use the categories on the side menu.

On the main page, you will see the definition of what a file extension is, how to best search for an unknown file extension, the file extension of the day and the most recently updated file extensions throughout the whole site.

My favorite way to use this site is to use the search engine when I run across a file extension I don’t know and I don’t have the program to run. This site is wonderful, because it explains the extension and provides information on the program that uses it. It also sometimes includes a link to get the program.

For example, I ran across a .rar file for an add on to a game I play. Having never seen this before, I was puzzled. So, I came to this site, looked it up and found out it can be opened by a program called WinRAR. I also learned that .rar files are compressed files like .zip files and you can use WinRAR to decompress them. How cool!

There are two categories on the side menu I want to tell you about too, because the rest are rather self-explanatory. They are: Most Visited File Extensions and Common File Extensions.

Most Visited File Extensions – This section will show you which file extensions are most frequently visited. This is also a good area to check to see the file extensions that baffle people. When I was there, .rar was eighth on the list, so I know I’m not the only one who didn’t know what it meant!

Common File Extensions – I wanted to mention this section, because these are the most used file extensions on your computer, so you may want to familiarize yourself with them.

From now on, file extensions never have to be a mystery to you. Go explore them today!

File Extensions

Q:
How can I change file extensions?

A:
That’s an excellent question and I’m sure many of you have wondered how to do this in the past. File extensions are a big part of our computer activities, because every file we work with has its own special extension and format. So, if you’ve ever needed to change an extension and you’re not sure how to do that, keep reading and find out!

First, let’s go over some examples. You may have even experienced these before. Maybe you have a document that is in an .htm (HTML) format, but you’d like to view it under a .txt (text) extension. Or maybe one of your friends e-mailed you a picture, but instead of it being a JPEG format like you’re used to, it was sent as a GIF or maybe even as a PDF. So, how can you change these to the formats you want? It’s pretty easy, so let’s go!

First, you need to make sure your system is set up to allow file extension changes. To check this out, go to your Start menu, choose Run and type in “explorer” (without the quotes). Once the new window opens, go to the Tools menu and click on Folder Options. (If you’re a Vista user, go to Start>Control Panel>Folder Options instead of using explorer.) Next, choose the View tab and find the option that says “Hide extensions for known file types.” Make sure this is unchecked. Now, you’re all set.

Once you receive an item that you want to change, just right click on it and choose Rename. You can then rename the file with the new extension that you prefer. Once you’re done, just hit Enter on your keyboard and it will be saved. Then you can just open the file again, but this time, it will be the way you want it.

Don’t settle for other extension names, do it your way from now on!
