I’m sure most of you have heard this term before, one way or another, but do you have any idea what it means? FireWire is fairly new to the computer world, so it’s understandable if you’ve never really been given a definition of it. Either way, that ends today. I’m going to do my best to give you the information you want to know, so here we go!
FireWire is basically a new serial bus interface standard that supports high-speed communication for personal computers. It is also used with digital audio and digital video formats. A lot of new computers these days are coming with a FireWire port installed. These new ports are located right next to the standard USB ports and they are used in a very similar way. Most FireWire devices come with a four or six pin cord and those fit into the computer ports as needed.
The Apple company actually owns the FireWire name, but it is known under other terms for other companies (for example, Sony’s name for it is i.Link). As I said before, FireWire ports are now being used with many computers, but it is also very common with other devices, such as digital cameras, camcorders, media players and so on. So, if you come across a FireWire port on one of your devices, at least you now know a little more behind the story. Yes!
