Imagine a library without a single book on the shelves. The Bexar County Public Library in San Antonio is opening the first paperless public library in the U.S.
The new “BiblioTech” will offer thousands of e-book titles and access to desktop and tablet computers. Patrons will also be able to use their library cards to check out e-readers to take home with them for a few days. Library cardholders who already own e-readers or tablets will be able to download books remotely. The space will feature meetings rooms, study space and an interactive children’s area.
County leaders said that literacy is no longer about picking up a physical book and being able to comprehend words. The new library is expected to open this summer.
