Fix Android Sync Problems with Google Calendar

Gaby from Las Vegas, NV writes:

I have a Samsung Galaxy SIII. I love using an Android. I’m having a problem with syncing my phone google calendar to my desktop calendar. It will sync PC to phone but not phone to PC. Very inconvenient seeing how I schedule my appointments using my phone when I’m out. Is this an issue with Samsung and I’m out of luck? Thank You!

Fear not Gaby. This is a common issue that many Android users have to work through at some point or another. However, the good news is that there is nothing wrong with your phone. The news gets better still when you hear that it is not a hard problems to solve!

So here’s the deal. The reason why your phone’s calendar events are not syncing with your Google Calendar is because the events you are creating on your phone are being added to your phone’s calendar instead of your Google Calendar.

Confused? Well, when you use the stock Android calendar app, your phone has a local calendar – a calendar that is saved to the device itself and not synced with anything. Unfortunately, this is also often the default calendar, so unless you change it to your Google Calendar when adding a new event, there is no way that these events will end up on your Google Calendar. Here’s how to fix it:

1. Open the Calendar app and click the plus sign to create an event like you normally would.

Add Calendar Event

2. Fill in the details you need for the calendar event you want to add.

Enter Event Details

3. This is the important part. At the top of the screen, under the title Calendar, you should see the words My Calendar. Tap to select it.

Select My Calendar

4. At this point you should see the email address for your Google account. Tap that to select your Google Calendar.

Select Gmail account

5. Tap Save to store your calendar event. It should sync to your Google Calendar within a few seconds.

Save to Google Account

So is there a way to avoid having to do this every time? Absolutely. The stock calendar app on Samsung phones should remember the last calendar you entered an event into. If you followed the instructions above, then that should now be your Google Calendar. The next time you go to add a new event, you should see your Google email address listed at the top of the event.

If, for whatever reason, this is not the case, and you are still seeing My Calendar when you go to add a new event, you may want to consider switching to another Calendar app like the Google Calendar app, because it only saves to a Google Calendar.

What about existing calendar events on your phone that you still need to transfer over to your Google Calendar? All you need to do is tap on the event to open it, and change the calendar it is assigned to by tapping on Calendar to bring up your list of calendars, and then tapping on your Google account. Tap Save to start the sync to Google.

From now on, you should be able to add events to your phone quickly and have no problems syncing to your Google Calendar!

Thank you. Like so many others, this was driving me crazy. On my Huawei Ascend Mate 2 it looks very different, but the principle is the same. In the very first field (looks like a button with a down-arrow) you can choose phone or your email account.

Again, thank you a million times a million!

What if I have like a year of unsynced events! I can’t go from one event to the other, they are too many!

Perfect, couldn’t figure out why my phone calendar events weren’t syncing to the computer.

Glad to find this site, spend several hours going around the Google infosites.
    Many, many thanks.

Why can’t they fix this issue permanently?? Also, with the current version of Google Calendar, there isn’t a way to change the the calendar for an existing event. This is SO frustrating! ! ! !

Is there a calendar that just simply WORKS with PC and android devices without this hassle?

This site was soooooo very helpful. I am so glad I found it and the fix worked perfectly.

This is false, they are not syncing for other reasons, I have added them to my google calendar and not the local one, it doesn’t sync because some event has broken data and it crashes the sync adapter. Your blog post title is misleading and I was looking for a fix for this problem, while your blog post is only a tutorial on how to pick the right calendar to put events on when the sync is already in a working state.

I completely agree. I can’t get my Google calendar on Samsung S7 to sync the events with Google on tab or PC.

Not my issue but will not sync. The events are created on my phone to the google calendar, and have worked for a few years. But stopped working a couple of weeks ago and will not sync.

  15. Buzzy says:

The same happened to me. PC works ok. Samsung tablet works ok, but Samsung phone doesn’t:
    1. I can’t see appointment created using PC or tablet in phone.
    2. Appointment created using phone is visible in PC and tablet.

This worked earlier this summer ok, but I guess some update to phone broke it. I tried to install google calendar to phone, but no luck with it. Syncing phone takes ages…

    Any help?
