Fixing “Security Center Service Cannot Be Started” Message

An icon on Windows tray (next to clock) says Solve PC issues: One Important Message. When I click on the icon, a dialog box opens with the message Turn on Windows Security Service Center Service (Important). To turn on the service I clicked on the message only to get the message (in a window) The Windows Security Service Center cannot be started.

Also, every time I run maintenance software, I get the message “a system restore point could not be created because that feature is currently disabled.”

How do I turn on the Security Service Center service? I am using Windows 7.

I’ve heard this question before, but don’t worry. The solution is pretty easy, so let’s get started.

1. These directions are for Windows 7. (which is also applicable for Windows Vista)  Let’s get started.

  • Click Start.
  • In the Start search box, type services.
  • In the Programs list, click Services.

2. In the details pane, right-click (or tap and hold) Security Center, and then tap or click Properties.

3. In the Startup, type list, tap or click Automatic (Delayed Start).

4. In the Service Status area, tap or click Start.

If everything starts without issue,  tap or click Apply, tap or click OK, and then close the Services window.

If you receive this error message when you click start: 

“Windows could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer. Error 1079: The account specified for this service differs from the account specified for other services running in the same process.”

Skip to step 6 to reconfigure the log on user for the service.

5. In the Security Center Properties dialog box, tap or click the Log On tab, and then tap or click Browse.

6. In the Enter the object name to select box, type your computer name.


7. Tap or click Check Names, and then tap or click OK when the name is authenticated.

8. In the Password box, type the administrator password.

9. In the Confirm password box, retype the administrator password.

10. Tap or click Apply, and then tap or click OK.

11. Close the Services window.

If you’re still getting the Security Center error after making these changes, you could have one of these issues:

1. Your computer is infected by malware.

2. Your registry key is corrupted.

To fix your registry key, go to Microsoft Support and click the Fix it button or link. Then click Run in the File Download dialog box, and follow the steps in the Fix it wizard.

You might also want to activate your PC’s Action Center. Action Center replaces Windows Security Center in this version of Windows. It manages firewall settings, Windows Update, antispyware software settings, Internet security, and User Account control settings. Action Center also monitors computer maintenance settings and provides links to troubleshooters and other tools that can help fix problems.

You can open Action Center by doing the following:

1. Click the start button.

2. Go to Control Panel.

3. Under System and Security click Review your computer’s status.

    I have same problem on my win7. I opened the services window, but “Security Center” is not on the list of services. But there is something called “Security Accounts” on the list but it indicates that it has been started
