Four Ways To Make Your Phone Last Longer & Work Better

You paid a lot for your mobile device – you’ like it to last a long time and work right. These tips don’t even require you to have an ounce of technical know-how — just some common sense.

1. Don’t get it wet.  Just like Gremlins, bad things happen when you get phones or tablets wet. (Yes, I know that some devices are waterproof, but I’d still suggest being careful).  One of the most common causes of deaths for phones is being dropped in a toilet. (Hey, they’re a great way to pass the time.) But a good splash of coffee can also kill your phone, especially if it gets right into a charging port. If you have a cup on the desk, move your phone to the other side or to your pocket. Cups with lids are a great idea around electronics. I once saw an engineer drop a can of soda on a floor in an edit suite. It began to spin and spew Dr. Pepper, wiping out several thousand dollars worth of electronics in about twenty seconds. When it comes to mobile devices. Dry is best. And that includes putting your phone away in the rain. I know you may think that was obvious but to a generation unaccustomed to being without their phones, it’s not.

2. Keep it clean. Stick touch screens don’t work very well. Sticky buttons don’t react as they should. So many of us use our phones and tablets while we eat or snack that we don’t realize how gunky we get the screens. Get some of that gunk into a port and shove in the power cord and you can start having problems charging. Wipe your device down daily with a microfiber cloth. A spray designed for cleaning electronics is good, too. But don’t spray it on the device. Spritz a light mist onto the cloth and then wipe down your device. If you’ve got some canned airs, spritz any ports as well. Or you could just blow in the ports, but be careful not to spit into them.

3. Keep it cool. Heat is another enemy of electronics. Most electronics are going to get hot sometimes. They do have a fairly high heat tolerance, but you don’t want your device running hot for a long period of time. So be careful about leaving your mobile device in a hot car or sitting out in the blazing sun, especially while in use. Some activities heat up devices more than others. Playing an active game or streaming a video can get your device pretty hot. If you notice that your phone or tablet is hot, don’t just drop it back in a drawer or purse when you’re finished with it. Let is sit for a minute or two and allow some of that heat to dissipate. On the other side, if it’s going to be below zero, make sure not to leave your phone in the car overnight.

4. Be careful.  These days, most mobile devices are fairly sturdy. So you might not shatter the screen the first time you drop it. But that doesn’t mean that repeated falls to the floor won’t shake something loose inside. I strongly suggest a good case. Also, be very careful plugging in those power cables. The charging and sync port is the most delicate part of your device. It’s easy to bend the tip of the cord or, even worse, damage the actual charging port. And a phone or tablet that you can’t charge is what we call a paperweight.  Keep in mind that you little device is actually an expensive computer. So before you leave it sitting on the arm of a couch or the edge of a picnic table, try to picture an expensive desktop PC perched there. Is that a place you’d feel comfortable leaving your iMac? Then think twice about leaving your iPhone there.
