Foxit Reader

Q:
Since you’ve talked about the Adobe Reader program, can you say a few things about the Foxit Reader? I’ve heard of it, but would like to learn more.

A:
I surely can. First of all, for those who may not know, the reason you mentioned the Adobe Reader program in the question is because the Foxit Reader is also a PDF file reader, which offers similar services. The Foxit Reader is also a free program and it can be downloaded at any time. I’ll get more into that information in a bit. Now, let me tell you about Foxit and you can see what you think!

The most recent version of Foxit Reader is 2.0 and it is available for Windows 98/ME/2000/ XP and the 2003 version. It is mainly compatible with the PDF Standard 1.6 program as well. Also, like I said above, it is a free PDF document viewer and printer. There’s not much information on the Web about the earlier version of Foxit, so I’m just going to focus on 2.0. (That’s the version you will probably be downloading anyway!) Okay, here I go.

To begin, the Foxit Reader is very small in size. The download is only 1.5 MB. Now, I don’t want to downsize the Adobe Reader, because I like that program as well, but its download size is 20 MB. That’s quite a difference! Foxit is also very fast. When you open the program, it launches in a matter of seconds and without any delays. You no longer have to deal with a company logo, display names, etc. It just plainly opens faster than you could ever imagine.

Some of the other more popular features in Foxit are an annotation tool and a text converter. The annotation tool allows you to annotate on your PDF documents. You can write comments in the margins or wherever you need to. This is helpful if you need to highlight a certain point to refer back to later, etc. You can draw graphics with this, highlight the text, type more text and just make any notes you deem necessary. The text converter lets you transfer a whole document into a text file. There is also very high security and privacy with the Foxit Reader. It does not have any spyware or adware and it will never automatically connect you to the Internet unless you specify otherwise. How cool is that?!

Now, with the new version of Foxit, several new features have come along with it. These don’t even include what I’ve gone over with you already. Here are just some of them:

  • Interactive form filler
  • Multi-language UI (user interface) that can be dynamically switched
  • On-demand download of add on
  • Self-upgrade options
  • Javascript support
  • Improved printing speed
  • Streamlined UI

As I said before, the Foxit Reader 2.0 is a free program. With the free version, you can view and print your PDF documents, fill out PDF forms and save them, view PDFs as text files and take advantage of critical add ons. Now, if you want any more add ons (the more advanced ones), there is a fee that comes along with that. Some examples of those are the Foxit Reader Pro Pack, the Foxit PDF Creator and the Foxit PDF Editor. While those are all nice, you can do so much with just the free version, so I would definitely just give that one a try first.

You can learn so much more about everything I’ve talked about today and download Foxit Reader 2.0 right from this link here. Give it a try and see what you think. Even if you do use the Adobe Reader, Foxit may be able to bring some new options to the table and it would be perfect for a backup program. Or you can certainly use it as your main confidant too. Check it out!
