Free Photoshop Alternatives for Mac OS

Monday, December 26th, 2016 by | Filed Under: App Reviews, Digital Photography, Mac OS, Photo Editing

Photoshop can be pretty expensive. We’ve offered alternatives before, but usually, they were for PCs. This time around, we’re going to check out the options for Mac users. And all of them are free! Crop, straighten, resize, adjust the colors, and even fix poor lighting.  Happy editing!

Autodesk Pixlr

This is a full-featured photo editing software for Mac users that does not compromise on features. No wonder it’s won the Editor’s Choice on the Mac App Store. 100 effects, 340 overlays, and 200 borders… you have them all. You can double expose an image or turn an image into a pencil sketch or a watercolor. Remove the red eyes in photos and even blur out the parts of the photo to focus on the part you want to feature. And all of this comes free. If you want more advanced features like masks to create special effects, you will have to fork out a small fee ($14.99 per year). But if you are happy with the basics, you could give this a try.

Filters for Photos

“Your photos. Your creativity. Your look.”  That’s how the promoters are selling this nifty, free photo editing app on the Mac store. And they are right about that all the way. With 30 creative filters ranging from subtle to extravagant, there’s something for everyone. The live preview makes it easy to find exactly the right filter.  The best part of this? It’s a completely free software; there is no premium edition.

Fotor Photo Editor

This one is recommended by the BBC as the definitive ‘lite Photoshop’. And yes, it’s just that and nothing more. If you are looking at basic editing without the masking and other advanced tools, this is it. But that doesn’t mean they don’t add new features. The latest edition has histogram and the ability to tweak the shadow, highlight, and midtone of any image. Perfect for amateur photographers and even professionals – you can process RAW images too!
