One of the most option-packed features of Safari on iOS can be found, somewhat surprisingly, under the “Add Bookmark” and “Bookmarks” options icons. However, before you go about using these features, it may be best to actually add a few bookmarks to use. To do this follow these Steps:
Adding a Bookmark to Safari
Step 1. Load up the webpage you wish to bookmark in Safari.
Step 2. Tap the “Add Bookmark” icon. The “Bookmark” submenu options will appear.
Step 3. Tap the “Add Bookmark” button. The “Add Bookmark” options window will appear.
Step 4. Review the bookmark properties to make sure they are correct. These properties are:
“Bookmark Name” – Tap this field if you wish to edit your bookmark’s default name.
“Bookmark URL” – Tap this field if you wish to edit the internet location which your bookmark goes to when tapped.
“Bookmark Location” – Tap this field to change where your bookmark appears within the Safari interface (within the bookmarks list, on the bookmarks Bar, or in a user defined Bookmark folder location [more on these options later])
Step 5. Once everything is properly set to your liking, Tap the “Save” button to save your bookmark.
Adding a Bookmark to your Home Screen
A lesser known, yet very handy feature within Safari for iOS is the ability to add a shortcut to a website directly on your Home Screen, with its own shiny icon and all! To do so:
Step 1. Follow Steps 1 and 2 above.
Step 2. Tap the button marked “Add To Home Screen” The “Add to Home” options dialog will appear.
Step 3. Review the name and icon to be placed on your Home Screen. If you wish to change your Home Screen Bookmarks’ name, Tap the Icon name field to make your changes.
Step 4. Tap the “Add” button. Your Bookmark Icon will now appear on your Home Screen.
Now that we have added a few bookmarks, follow these Steps to get them organized for quick and easy access:
Step 1. Click the “Bookmarks” icon. The “Bookmarks List” will appear. By default you will find the following items in your list:
“History” – Tap this option to view a list of your most recently visited web pages.
“Bookmarks Bar” – Tap this option to view the bookmarks currently located on your “Bookmarks Bar.” By default this option list will be empty, until you add bookmarks onto the “Bookmarks Bar.”
“Bookmarks List” – Any bookmarks created and added to the standard “Bookmarks” location will be listed here.
Step 2. – Click the “Edit” button in the “Bookmarks” options header. A number of new buttons/icons/options will appear:
The most prominent options will display on either side of your standard bookmarks in the “Bookmarks” list. These options are:
A red and white “minus” icon to the left of each of your bookmarks,
3 horizontal lines to the right of the bookmark arrow,
and an arrow to the right of your bookmark.
Step 3. To delete a bookmark, tap the red and white minus icon; a “Delete” button will appear to the right of your bookmark.
Step 3-1. Tap the “Delete” icon to remove your bookmark from the bookmarks list.
Step 4. To re-order your bookmarks, Tap and hold the 3 horizontal lines to the right of your bookmark.
Step 4-1. Drag your bookmark up or down the list until it is placed where you would like it to be listed in your bookmark list.
Step 5. To edit a bookmark, Tap the arrow to the immediate right of your bookmark. The “Edit Bookmark” dialog box will open.
Within the “Edit Bookmark” dialog box you will be presented with three options:
Bookmark Name: Tap this field to edit the name of you bookmark as it appears in your Bookmarks List.
Bookmark Location: Tap this field to edit the URL (website location) which your bookmark points to.
Bookmarks List: Tap this field to select where your bookmark will appear – in the default Bookmarks List, or in the Bookmarks Bar at the top of your browser.
Additionally, you can choose to sort your bookmarks into user defined folders, which can themselves be sorted into either the Bookmarks List or Bookmarks Bar. To do so follow these steps:
Step 5-1. Click the “New Folder” button in the upper right corner of your Bookmarks List. The “Edit Folder” dialog will appear.
Step 5-2. Tap the “Title” field and Name your folder
Step 5-3. Tap the Bookmarks List field and select where your newly created Bookmark Folder should appear.
Step 5-4. Select your folder from the Bookmarks List field when sorting your bookmark(s) to add your bookmark(s) to your new folder.
Believe it or not, there is even more fun to be had with Bookmarks in Safari for iOS; which we will cover shortly in a future edition. Enjoy!
