Futuristic Cities: 5 Innovative Destinations

The more you travel, the more similarities you see around the world. But when you go to the following cities, something is different. These five cities offer a taste of the future.

Los Angeles

The City of Angels has more to offer visitors than chance celebrity sightings. LA is as design conscious as it gets, and the latest major developments in the city show ample design savvy. From The Broad Museum to the Caltrans Building, LA has no shortage of modern architectural gems that have an otherworldly feel. It’s easy to envision what the future will look like after spending a week exploring this sprawling city.

When paired with its unmatched energy and seemingly limitless possibilities, LA’s futuristic design aesthetic may even tempt you to move and chase your wildest dreams. With so many options in such a massive city, housing choices can be overwhelming, so use a reliable search tool to narrow down the best options. Start by choosing your favorite buildings, coffee shops and restaurants and searching nearby areas.

Eindhoven

You may have never heard of this mid-sized city in the southern area of the Netherlands, but Eindhoven has made quite a name for itself thanks to the spacecraft-looking Hovenring. Weighing over 1,000 tons, the Hovenring is a steel bike-only track that is suspended from steel cables and a space needle over some of the city’s most gridlock-prone areas of high traffic.

What’s more, Eindhoven has gained a reputation for innovation in the business world. The city has the highest average amount of patents per resident, according to research conducted by the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development.

Medellin

While the mention of this Colombian city brings to mind images of violence and drug trade, today’s Medellin is a much different place than it was in the days that “Narcos” was set in. Violent crime has dramatically declined in the past 25 years. From 1991 to 2010 alone, the homicide rate dropped by almost 80 percent, according to the Wall Street Journal.

While the improved public safety rates are impressive, Medellin has transformed in many other ways, thanks to creative solutions like the use of gondolas and escalators to diffuse the city’s major traffic woes. Though it may not look space-age modern, like some of the other cities mentioned here, redevelopment is a high priority and the city’s look and feel is rapidly changing in a way that makes the future seem a little brighter.

Hong Kong

Take one look at Hong Kong’s impressive skyline and it’s hard not to feel like you’ve been transported to the future. This dense urban jungle has more skyscrapers than any other city in the world, at a count of 1,268. HK also has an impeccably refined metro system, the MTR, on which roughly 90 percent of city dwellers’ travel is conducted.

As the financial capital of Asia, HK is unsurprisingly ahead of the curve in adopting the latest technology. Up until 2006, Hong Kong schools were using biometric fingerprinting to take attendance, though the practice has since been discontinued due to privacy concerns.

Dubai

In the early 2000s, Dubai was on the cusp of becoming a city beyond imagination. While financial issues in worldwide markets have since slowed the development and halted the rapid growth that had been previously projected, Dubai still stands as a stunning symbol of innovation and possibility for the future.

Most famously, Dubai has the tallest skyscraper in the world, the Burj Khalifa, standing at 2,722 feet tall. Many compare Dubai to a real life version of SimCity, and it’s easy to see why with the plethora of unusual architecture, development concepts and visitor attractions
