As part of a push to encourage girls to pursue science and technology related fields, the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles has teamed with Women in Games International to create a new merit badge for young video game developers.

“Our ultimate goal is to create a STEM-aligned (Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics) video game badge for the Girl Scouts of the United States of America,” Amy Allison, vice president of WIGI, told GirlGamer “Creating this badge will get young girls excited in technology and science and let them know that they, too, can have a career in the video game industry.”

The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles also has two robotics teams that encourage girls to pursue careers in science.

Right now the badge is specific to the Los Angeles area, but there are plans to expand. The Boy Scouts introduced a game design badge in March, but the Girl Scout badge requirements specifically focus on video game development.
