Give Me The Value And Just The Value

Give Me The Value And Just The Value

Have you ever found yourself working in MS Excel and wishing you could paste the value of a formula instead of the formula?

Or maybe you found yourself scrolling back and forth in a worksheet or flipping between different worksheets trying to type the value in by hand – desperately hoping you get it accurate.

You know what I’m referring to, the times when you’re trying to copy a value to another location and you only need the value – not the formula it came from.

When you finished the copy / paste what you probably had was a zero or some other incorrect number because the formula was pasted with relative cell references. (That is, if the formula is to add the two cells to the immediate left then the pasted formula is adding the cells to the immediate left of the new location. Therefore, the value has changed because the two cells to the left have changed.)

Wish you had a way to paste the value -just the value?

Good – then you’re in the right place.

What you need to put an end to your nightmare is Paste Special.

(Be careful here – you need Paste Special, not a simple Paste.)

So, how do you get the infamous Paste Special to work for you?

Believe it or not, it’s only a couple extra clicks beyond the usual copy / paste that you perform every day.

Well – enough of that – let’s get started.

The first thing you need to do is to highlight the cell or cells you need to copy.

Next you’ll need to copy just like normal. Either with the copy button,

the Edit menu, Copy choice or with the key combination Ctrl + C.

The third step is to select the cell where you want to paste the values.

Now you’re ready to paste – but instead of the usual paste you’ll need to go the Edit menu, Paste Special choice.

The Paste Special window will pop open allowing you to make your pasting choices.

You’re looking for the Values choice.

Once you’ve made the selection click OK.

In the selected cell you should have the value – not the formula – from the cell originally copied.

And there you have it – the value and only the value. If only it could be so easy to get everything we ask for in life.
