Do you use Gmail as your main e-mail provider and Google Chrome as a web browser? Sure you, do – a lot of people do, in fact. Yet there’s one thing that’s always annoyed me (up until I found this tip, that is) – getting notifications on my desktop whenever I receive an e-mail.
Well, good news, Chromies – it’s easy to enable desktop notifications in Gmail, and here’s how.
First, open Google Chrome, log into your Gmail account and click the gear icon on the upper right.

Under the Desktop Notification section, put a dot in the New mail notifications on radio button, and click Save Changes at the bottom.

Voila – you should now receive a handy little desktop pop-up whenever you receive an e-mail in your Gmail account!

If you’d like to turn off these notifications, just follow the steps again and select the Mail notifications off option.

Explorer 8 does not support desktop notifications. You must have Google Chrome as your default homepage. Simply having a g-mail account is not sufficient
Unfortunately lots of browsers (I use the latest Firefox) do not support this wonderful addition,I wish they did.I know I could use Chrome, which does support it,but I prefer using my existing browser.

There is no listing “New mail notifications” under the gear in my G-mail.
Does this work in browsers other than Chrome? I get a message that says my browser isn’t supported, and to “upgrade” my browser to Chrome.
For this tip to work, you have to use Google Chrome. Internet Explorer 9 does not offer the option you mentioned.
This tip sounds good but is not dupported by Firefox. It asked me to upgrade to google chrome – which I did not do.
Doesn’t work with Firefox either.
Several readers were disappointed to learn that this feature isn’t available for Firefox. There is a Firefox extension that offers Gmail desktop notification, Gmail Checker for Firefox. Just search the WorldStart site for that phrase, if you’d like to read our review.

It’s easy to say “First, log into your Gmail account and click the gear icon on the upper right.”
Exactually, HOW do I ???
Try the extension tab notifier for firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/tab-notifier/
It provides desktop notifications really similar to Chrome’s ones.
Besides, if you want, it monitors the title of the pages to update you about websites that don’t support desktop notifications at all (e.g. other web-based emails).
