Google Homepage Themes

Q:
Awhile back, I set up a Google homepage and even though it’s a great resource, it’s a little boring to look at. Is there anything I can do to dress it up a bit? Anything will do, just please tell me there’s something!

A:
I’m really glad you asked, because there is in fact something you can do. Google just recently announced a new addition to their Google Homepage features and that just so happens to be themes. Yep, that’s right. You can now add a theme to your Google page. If that’s not the best way to “dress something up,” I don’t know what is!

Okay, I first want to make sure everyone is with me on the whole Google Homepage thing. We ran a tip on it a few months ago (which you can read here [1]), but I just wanted to go over the basics of it before we delved into the new themes. With Google Homepage, you can basically design a Web page just for yourself. You can put what you like on it and no one else will be able to have any say in the matter. To get started with your own Google Homepage, you will need a Google account. If you use any other Google programs (such as Gmail, etc.), you can use the same username and password for this, but if you don’t have an account, you’ll need to create one. You can do that by clicking right here.

Once you have that done, visit www.google.com/ig and sign in. Next, click on the Add Stuff link. This will take you to the area where you can choose what content you want to add to your page. There are several items to choose from too. On the left hand side, you’ll see all the categories, such as news, tools, sports, lifestyle, new stuff, etc. Once you find something you want to add, just click on the Add it now button. You can add a weather forecaster, a calendar, a to do list, quotes of the day, jokes of the day, etc., etc., etc. There really is something for everyone!

Alright, when you have all the content added to your page that you want, you can then start on your theme and this is where today’s question comes back into play. Click on the Back to homepage link at the very top of the page to get back to the main area. Click on the Select theme link and you will see seven different ones to choose from. There’s of course, the classic theme, beach, bus stop, city scape, sweet dreams, tea house and seasonal scape.

Choose the one you want and click on it. It will automatically change your homepage for you as a little preview. If you don’t like it, just click on another one. It’s as easy as that to make sure you get the one you want! I personally like the sweet dreams option. It has beautiful colors and it just looks so nice on my page. Now, I haven’t even told you the coolest part yet. These themes are interchangeable, depending on the time of day. If it’s the morning, your theme will be more bright and if it’s night time, the theme will change to a darker mode.

So, for example, my sweet dreams option is now a bright sun since it’s the morning time, but if I check my page later on tonight, it will be darker. When you have your theme chosen, click Save and it will ask you for your zip code so they can change it accordingly. How cool is that?! Also, if you ever want to change it, just go back to the Select theme link and pick another one.

Google Homepage is really easy to work with and if you ever want to change something, you can do so with no worries. I’m so excited about these themes. They are the perfect way to spice up your page a little and having seven to choose from is just amazing. I’ll be changing mine all the time! Give it a try today, you just might fall in love with it too!
