Google Inbox Reads Your Email To Make Life Easier

Google has a new app the company promises will make your life easier. I think. Here’s how the company introduced the new product, “Today, we’re introducing something new. It’s called Inbox. Years in the making, Inbox is by the same people who brought you Gmail, but it’s not Gmail: it’s a completely different type of inbox, designed to focus on what really matters.”

So it’s like Gmail, but not Gmail and it focuses on the love of family and friends? Okay, probably not – but that is what really matters to me.  Really, what this app does is organize your e-mail according to what Google feels are appropriate categories. Much the way the tabs Google introduced for Gmail last year pre-sorted your mail in categories it felt matched the content.

Inbox will look through your email and take what it deems to be the key information from messages, like flight times, photos and documents and group them into what it calls bundles – which sound an awful lot like tabs or a file in Outlook. You’ll also be able to create your own bundles.  How you feel about the many features of this app will probably depend on whether or not you view scanning your e-mails for information, a violation of privacy.

It will also pull up what it feels to be valuable additional information from the web not  contained in the e-mail such as the status of the flight mentioned or the tracking information for a package.

Yeah, so they’re reading your e-mail to help find other stuff they think you want to see. Inbox will then pull out the information it thinks is key from each e-mail and display it to you on what are commonly called cards.

You will also be able to add reminders and Inbox will read that reminder to give you additional information. If you say you need to go to the store, Inbox will get the store’s hours and phone number for you or offer online purchase options should you remind yourself to pick up some shoes.

It will also scan your e-mails to provide helpful extra information. If you make a reservation online, it will add a map to the restaurant to the e-mail.

It’s a little like have a nosy personal assistant. Inbox is all up in your business, but its really just trying to help. Privacy concerns aside, many users who have tested this app seem to absolutely love it. Right now it works only with Gmail accounts, but Google is planning on making it compatible with other e-mail providers in the future.

Some users have already received invites to the beta test of Inbox. But if you don’t want to wait, just e-mail inbox@google.com to get your invite.
