Q:
I’ve been hearing about this new text service that allows you to search the Web on your cell phone. Can you tell me more about it?

A:
I’m glad you asked! I’ve just recently heard about this too and it’s super cool. This is the perfect time to share it with all of you. The service you have heard about it called Google SMS (Short Message Service) and it lets you search the Internet from your cell phone. You don’t even have to pay the special Web access charges! How great is that? You do however, need to have the text messaging service enabled on your phone.

With Google SMS, you can send a text message and receive back phone book listings, dictionary definitions, product prices and even more. Google SMS is still in the beta form (they’re still testing it), so it only works with major cell phone providers like Alltel, Cincinnati Bell, Cingular/AT&T, Nextel, Sprint PCS, T-Mobile and Verizon. That pretty much covers them all anyway! So, as long as you get service from one of these companies and you are able to send and receive text messages on your phone, you can use this new search finder.

Let’s try it out! What if you were out and about and you needed to take home dinner to your family. You think pizza would be a good idea and you remember there is a new pizza place in town, but you’re just not quite sure of the address. All you need to do is get out your cell phone, go to your text messaging area and type in the numbers 46645 (it spells GOOGL). Since you know it’s a new pizza place and you know the city it’s in, type in “pizza new toledo oh.” (Or whatever fits your query). If you know the zip code, you can even shorten it up to “pizza 43617″ for more accurate results.

In a matter of seconds, you will get a reply back with a listing of the address and phone number of the pizza place. If they’re not sure exactly which one you’re talking about, they will send you up to four choices! So, in no time, you can have the address and phone number of the restaurant and you can order your pizza, pick it up and take it home for dinner.

You can even look up residential and business phone listings with Google SMS. Looking for the phone number of a friend? Type in their name and the city/state they live in and wait for their phone number to show up on your cell phone screen. While writing this article, I did a search for a friend back home and for Magic Wok (one of my favorite restaurants) and received the results within seconds.

If you want to define a word, just type in define and the word (“define apple“). This is the answer I received back: “Apple: fruit with red or yellow or green skin and sweet to tart crisp whitish flesh.” And it even included a source with it. Very cool!

You can even compare prices with this thing! Type in “price dvd player price cd player price 19 inch toshiba television” and wait for your results. It also has a calculator you can use. It really is well rounded and a good information source if you’re in a jam and don’t have anywhere else to look. If you have any trouble, check out http://sms.google.com for some additional information.

And the best part? It’s completely free. This is really worth a look see!
