Help! Copy/Paste Isn’t Working

Tuesday, March 5th, 2013 by | Filed Under: Computer Terms, MS Excel, MS Office Help, MS Word

Question: My copy/paste operation has failed. Is there a way to fix it? HP Pavillion Windws 7 Home Premium.

Answer: I’m not sure what type of copy/paste operation you’re trying to perform, but I can think of one possibility. The clipboard used in Word and Excel will only hold up to 24 items, and it may not be allowing you to perform that function if you have more than 24 items. In Word, go to Home and click the little arrow below the upper left-hand corner.

Now you can see the clipboard contents and clear it.

You can also clear your Windows clipboard by typing cmd in the Search Menu and pulling up the Command Prompt.

Once you have the Command Prompt window, type the following: cmd.exe /c “echo off | clip” and hit Enter.

That may take care of your problem. Hope the simple fix works.

I have found that copy and paste in my case were affected by Zonealarm firewall. Apparently Zonealarms web security was dumping my clipboard as a safety precaution. It would allow me to copy and paste sporadically after it dumped my clipboard. I believe there are other safety programs doing the same thing so check all your programs that try to protect you by keeping your clipboard clean. Hope this helps someone.

On copy and paste – – mine is working OK, except that the small progrsm 25clips will not install. I used the demo for a year and liked it, but it reached its max usage. So for about $10 I purchased the permanent version. That is what will not install. It gives the error msg “setup_25clips.exe is not a valid win32 application”. The program author says it does not do that for him. He suggested I download it on some other network and transfer it by memory stick, but that is easier said than done. What do I do?

BTW, your writeup implies that MS Word has multiple clips built in. If so, it is the first real advantage I have found for Word over my trusty WordPerfect. Still not worth paying $$$ for, however. Do you have any other multi-clip suggestions? Any comments on Word vs WordPerfect?

That “command prompt” worked great for me! Thanks so much for the tip.

Bummer. It worked for a while, and then my computer got shut off in a power outage, and it’s back to not doing it. The problem is a delay. I can sit and right-click for at least 45 seconds before the box pops up. And sometimes I can right-click until the cows come home and the box still won’t pop up. I did all that you suggested and it’s still not working. I have an HP computer, with XP. My mouse is set up correctly. What should I do?!!! This is so irritating! Please help. :)

You might stop using XP. It’s not supported anymore. Not safe. Get some newer software. Check your Internet provider’s speed. How much stuff do you have on your computer? Slow loading can be a symptom of too much. Delete some things that are taking up a lot of bytes and defrag your computer.
