My tech was killed in a auto/motorcycle accident 6 months ago.All of his stuff is being held by the court, waiting for trial. Meanwhile, I can barely use my laptop, I don’t have admin password. How can I take back control of My laptop????? Thank you for any help you maybe able to give.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. You should always know the administrator password to your own computer. In fact, you should have been the one who selected the password.  Your tech should have made sure to share that information with you. Are you positive, it’s not included in some paperwork or perhaps in an e-mail communication with your tech person?  At any time, did he ask you for something to use as a password? Perhaps that was the password.

If you can log on with a user account, but not an administrator account, you should be able to do most things, except for install programs, but your access is limited.  Depending on how your computer is set up, you may be able to grant yourself admin permission by following the steps outlined in this article Help! No Admin Permission On My Computer

If that doesn’t work, here are a couple of options you can try.  You could back up your important documents and files to an external drive and reinstall Windows on your PC as long as you have a boot disc.  This will wipe all of the current files from your computer and give you a fresh start.

You could attempt to reset the password using Offline NT Password & Registry Editor by following the steps outlined in 3 Ways To Reset Your Windows Admin Password.

If you don’t feel particularly tech-savvy, you’ll probably want to find another tech to assist you with reinstalling Windows or the password and registry editor options.  Whatever the case, make sure you put your admin password in a safe place this time.
