A reader has an office problem: “I purchased 2007 Student version of Windows Office Suite. It was available for 3 computers. I lost my product key. Where can I find it on my HP desktop? I purchased HP Envy a year ago, and my subscription to Windows Office has expired. Now they want me to purchase this software for $150 for one year. Can you help me?”
I’m afraid I don’t have a lot of good news here. There are programs to help you find lost keys. Click here to learn more. But, security and bug support for Office 2007 ends this fall. It won’t be safe to use after that, so it’s probably not worth reinstalling.
You do bring up a very important point. It’s imperative that you do not lose or misplace product keys for things like Microsoft Office. If you still have the discs for Office 2007, the product key is likely in there with the discs. So take a second look and keep an eye out for stickers on envelopes.
You need to think about replacing Office on that HP desktop as well. You can get a Home subscription for Office 365 for $99 per year and that will cover 5 devices. You could also think about switching to a free office suite like LibreOffice or Open Office.
