Help! My Inbox is Full!
If you’re like me, your e-mail account tends to outgrow its capacity on a monthly basis. So, if you want to prevent some serious program issues, your best bet is to clean up your mailbox! When your e-mail account gets so full that you can’t receive any more incoming mail, there are a few things you can do to remedy the problem. Plus, if you’re receiving spam or junk e-mail, you can also easily solve the problem by doing one or more of the following. Let’s check it out!
First things first. You need to do your research. Find out exactly how much space you receive (also known as your quota) for incoming messages before setting up your e-mail account. Some services offer a limited space for free, while others, like Gmail, offer unlimited mail storage. In addition, Gmail is not only free, but the amount of storage space keeps growing everyday. It even shows your e-mail statistics on both the page where you log in and where you sign up for an account.
When you set up your e-mail account, or if you’ve already done so, you can change your spam settings. It’s very simple to do and today, I will use Yahoo! Mail as an example. Most junk mail goes into your spam box automatically when you have the spam filter turned on. If you don’t already have it turned on, go to the Options menu in the top right hand corner and select Mail Options. On the next page, select Spam Protection and then select the options for your preferred level of security.
If you already know the offending spam e-mail address, you can add it to your Block list manually. When you’re checking your Inbox, click on the box to the left of the From: column for all of the e-mails you know are spam. After you’ve checked all of those boxes, click on the Spam button and it will automatically block those addresses in the future. If you only have a few minutes to check your e-mail each day, you can scroll down the list of From: addresses and, if none are important, do a Check All and Delete. Or, you can even do a Check All and then manually uncheck the important addresses. If you start doing this as soon as you set up your e-mail account, you will be able to prevent your Inbox from filling up so quickly.
To prevent future spam, one method I’ve found that works very well is to simply not enter your e-mail address on every Web site that requests it. While it may be required, some sites “sell” your e-mail address to other companies for marketing purposes. When an e-mail address is required, you can set up temporary accounts from various clients. Finally, have you ever heard of the “National Do Not Call Registry?” Well, believe it or not, but they have one for e-mails now too! Simply go to www.ftc.gov/opa/2004/02/dnem.shtm to register all of your e-mail accounts. In conclusion, if you remember to check your e-mail daily, you will be able to stay on top of your Inbox and simplify your life for good!
