A reader writes in a panic: “My Mother who is 95 has forgotten her password and we are all trying desperately to unlock it. It brings her such joy. I am just hopelessly lost and don’t know who to ask.
It is disabled as she must have tried to open it several times and failed. And now she isn’t able to open it with a password. This iPad also has never been synced to a computer.”
It’s very important to not lose a tablet password. Losing one can turn a tablet into an expensive paperweight. It’s also very important to make sure that you set up an e-mail address or phone number where you can be reached in case you lose the password. If that’s a bit too much for your Mom, someone else in the family needs to take charge of it.
Fortunately with an iPad, it is possible to retrieve you password. Now this will only work if we’re talking about an actual iPad purchased from Apple. This won’t help if you’re using “iPad” as a generic term for tablet.
Had this device been synced with iTunes, there would be other ways to retrieve it, but here’s what you’ll need to do to restore your device in recovery mode.
You’ll need a computer and this computer will need to have iTunes installed So download it from Apple, if it’s not already there. If you don’t have a PC, you can borrow one from a friend or just take it into your closest Apple store. iTunes will need to be open before we start.
Connect the iPad to your computer with its included cable. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same tip. Don’t let go when it starts. You need to hold those buttons down until you see the recovery mode screen.
You’ll have the option to Restore or Update. Pick Restore.
The necessary software will be downloaded for the device. (If it happens to take longer than 15 minutes, you’ll have to start the process over.)
Once the process is finished, your device will be reset. Now you’ll have to in and set everything up again, including logging on to your account, setting up your WiFi and setting up the e-mail. This time, you’re going to make sure to write down that password and put it in a safe place.
