Help – My Touchpad Stopped Working After Upgrading To Windows 10!

Upgrade can sometimes cause issues. Like what happened to Larry. He writes:  I just upgraded to Windows 10, from Windows 7, on my HP laptop. Since the upgrade my touch-pad does not work. I can move the mouse, but cannot click on any links or open folders, or scroll with the touch-pad. I have to left click to open anything. How do I get the touch-pad to work again?

Unfortunately you aren’t the only one to experience some hiccups like this after upgrading to Windows 10, Larry. Plenty of users are going through these little annoyances as issues are discovered with the new operating system.

Resolving this issue will be a bit tricky, as obviously you won’t be using your touchpad to solve the problem! Ideally, you should plug in a separate USB mouse to follow these instructions, but if that’s not an option, you can use keyboard commands only by tapping the Windows key and using the arrow buttons and Enter key to scroll through and select options in the various menu screens.

For a very simple way to reach the Device Manager window without using your touchpad or mouse at all, simply hold down the Windows key and then press “X” to bring up a menu at the lower-left corner of your screen. Use the up arrow key to scroll up to the Device Manager option and then tap Enter.

In the Device Manager screen, press the Tab button to highlight the top entry, and then use the down arrow key to highlight the entry for your touchpad. When its highlighted, tap the right arrow key to expand the menu, then press the down arrow key and Enter to bring up the main menu for your touchpad.

Press the Tab key repeatedly until the “General” tab is highlighted and then use the arrow keys to scroll to the “Driver” tab. Using the tab key, highlight the “rollback driver” option if it isn’t grayed out and hit Enter and then follow the instructions to revert to the older Windows 7 driver you’d been using before.

If the option is grayed out, instead select “Update Driver” and follow the on-screen prompts to download a new version compatible with Windows 10. In some cases Windows may not be able to locate the newest driver automatically – in this instance you’ll have to actually open your web browser and download the new Windows 10 compatible driver directly from your computer manufacturer’s web site.

In some cases, you may instead have to fully uninstall and then reinstall the driver to get the touchpad working. If simply updating isn’t helping, select the “Uninstall” option and then restart your computer, at which point you should be automatically prompted to reinstall the driver.

For most touchpad problems after upgrading to Windows 10 updating the driver should solve the issue, but if you still run into problems there’s one more setting to check. Hit the Windows key and scroll up and select “Settings” to check and see if your touchpad was disabled for some reason during the original upgrade process.



Navigate to “Devices” and hit Enter, and then select the “Mouse and Touchpad” tab at the left side. Select the “Additional Mouse Options” link at the bottom of the window.

Scroll over to the “ELAN” tab (this may be named different depending on your specific make and model of laptop) and then check the “Enable” box and choose “Apply.” You should now be on your way to happy computing again!
