Help! Windows Update Won’t Install

Monday, January 19th, 2015 by | Filed Under: Security Help

Jill from Australia writes:

Since January 6 when I go to shut down my computer (desktop, running Windows 7) I have Windows saying it is installing update 1 of 5……I just sit & wait & nothing happens until eventually my computer shuts down. When I look at my updates they are all listed and saying (for just one of them):
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2676562)
Installation date: ‎11/‎01/‎2015 10:03 PM
Installation status: Successful
Update type: Important
This next part (printed below) just came up when I was pasting the update that was successful to this email. What should I do? Please can you help me!!!!
A security issue has been identified that could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to compromise your system and gain control over it. You can help protect your system by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this update, you may have to restart your system.
Jill, don’t worry too much about the warning from Microsoft. It’s just telling you what that update is for and encouraging you to install it.  The first thing I’d like you to try is to run the Microsoft Fixit for this problem.  Just click this link to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter .
You could also attempt to manually install the update.
If that doesn’t work, you could attempt a System Restore, though with this particular update, I’m not sure it will help. This update is over two years old and unless you haven’t been installing any updates in the past two years, it has failed to install for a darn long time.
Let us know if any of these solutions work.

The Microsoft warning can be stopped by removing the checkmark next to allow remote assistance in the control panel under Systems category.

Mine won’t install and they have been trying since 7/29 sometimes 2x a day. I finally unchecked it. It says my Dell computer isn’t compatible with windows 10 that I may not be able to connect to the internet. So I gave up on it.
