Today’s site is a fun browser application that will parse any writing that you paste into it. It checks for the overuse of adverbs, passive voice, and hard to read sentences.
It’s easy to use too! You can copy some of your writing and then paste it into the text box, or write directly in the box. After you’ve added the text it will analyze it and give it a readability rating on the right side of the page.
There you’ll also see color coded categories that match up to the color coded portions of your passage of text. Blue is for adverbs. Green is for passive voice. Purple suggests there is a simplified way to phrase what you’ve written. Yellow is hard to read, and red is very hard to read.
I thought it was fun to paste in some of my favorite literary passages and see how they did. Hemingway didn’t fair so well, but Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock did okay.
