Sylvia is in search of a vanishing document. She writes: “How do I locate a file that has gone missing from the document file over the last couple of days?”
First, let’s check the recycle bin to make sue the file hasn’t accidentally been deleted.
Click the top of the Date Deleted column to sort them by the most recently deleted items. If you emptied the recycle bin after deleting your document, you won’t find it in there.
If you don’t see your item in there, check the Documents library.
You can try searching by name or sorting by Date modified.
It’s possible for a document to be saved somewhere other than the documents file. Your best bet is to type the name of the missing document into the search box in Windows 7 or 10 or the search charm in Windows 8.
Also, if you happen to have external drives plugged into your PC, don’t forget to check there. It’s possible a document may have been moved or saved there. The same goes true for cloud storage. It’s possible to save or move an item to cloud storage by mistake.
I have my PC set up to save documents both to the Documents folder on my PC and to my OneDrive.
