How Do I Import Gmail To

Tuesday, May 14th, 2013 by | Filed Under: E-Mail Help

Grace from Fairfax, VA writes:

I just opened an Outlook internet account, and I’m trying to import my Gmail into it. I am having a really difficult time doing it. In my Gmail, these are the instructions: Open Outlook, Click the Tools menu, and select Accounts or Account Settings… On the E-mail tab, click New… If you are prompted to Choose E-mail Service, select Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP, and click Next. Use the information below to configure POP with your mail client. My problem is that I can’t find the TOOLS menu in Outlook. Can you please help me out with this? I googled it and I’m not the only person with this problem. There is no yellow TOOLS icon. When I tried using the Outlook instructions, it keeps getting ‘hung’ on ‘please change your gmail to POP’ – which I made sure was on. THANKS! – I love getting your email every day.

Answer: Grace, your problem seems to be that you are using instructions for the Outlook e-mail client  – a program that you would purchase and install on your computer and not for – the Internet-based e-mail service.

Let’s go over the steps for receiving your Gmail in an account. What follows are the steps to forward you Gmail to your account, link your Gmail contacts to Outlook and import your Gmail into Ready? I’d suggest having two browser windows open. One logged into Gmail and another logged into your account. This will save time.

Forwarding Gmail

Open your Gmail account and click the little cog to the right and click Settings in the drop-down menu.

Under Settings, choose the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab and choose Add a forwarding address. When the box pops up enter your new address, and then save the changes. You’ll receive a confirmation e-mail in your inbox. Open it and click on the confirmation link.

Now go back to the Forwarding tab in Gmail under settings. Refresh the page and select Forward a copy of incoming mail to your new address and the choose Save Changes.

I’m assuming you’d like your Gmail Contacts available in Outlook. Here’s how to link them.  Click the drop-down arrow in the upper left.

Select People.

Then choose your Google Contacts.

You’ll see the window below.  Choose Connect. You will have to log into your Google account.

You’ll receive another confirmation e-mail in your inbox. Your contacts may take awhile to import.

Now on to getting your old Gmail messages imported into your account.  Follow this link to go to It still reads Hotmail on some of the instructions, but this will switch you to Fill out the information for you Gmail and accounts.

Then you can choose to copy your email messages and address book and also send an e-mail informing your contacts of your new address if you choose.

You’ll get a confirmation screen. This process could take a day or so to finish. Your Gmail will appear in a new folder called GMAIL Mail and you should receive another confirmation e-mail.

I know it’s a long process, but you only have to do it once.

Hope this helps.

Outlook is becoming a force to be reckoned with. Unlike Gmail Outlook now allows you to use a private domain in Outlook. I can’t remember if it’s free or a small cost but much cheaper than Google’s high fee for this

Android-Sync is all you need. Life time license for $30… I sync contacts between Outlook Contacts and Android phone and I sync Outlook Calendar to my Android Calendar and then sync it up with my desktop Gmail Calendar. Hasn’t let me down yet. You will figure out all the small tweaks so you don’t get double entries. Simple and to the point… CompanionLink for $50 is not worth it.
