I just opened an Outlook internet account, and I’m trying to import my Gmail into it. I am having a really difficult time doing it. In my Gmail, these are the instructions: Open Outlook, Click the Tools menu, and select Accounts or Account Settings… On the E-mail tab, click New… If you are prompted to Choose E-mail Service, select Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP, and click Next. Use the information below to configure POP with your mail client. My problem is that I can’t find the TOOLS menu in Outlook. Can you please help me out with this? I googled it and I’m not the only person with this problem. There is no yellow TOOLS icon. When I tried using the Outlook instructions, it keeps getting ‘hung’ on ‘please change your gmail to POP’ – which I made sure was on. THANKS! – I love getting your email every day.
Answer: Grace, your problem seems to be that you are using instructions for the Outlook e-mail client – a program that you would purchase and install on your computer and not for Outlook.com – the Internet-based e-mail service.
Let’s go over the steps for receiving your Gmail in an Outlook.com account. What follows are the steps to forward you Gmail to your Outlook.com account, link your Gmail contacts to Outlook and import your Gmail into Outlook.com. Ready? I’d suggest having two browser windows open. One logged into Gmail and another logged into your Outlook.com account. This will save time.
Open your Gmail account and click the little cog to the right and click Settings in the drop-down menu.
Under Settings, choose the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab and choose Add a forwarding address. When the box pops up enter your new Outlook.com address, and then save the changes. You’ll receive a confirmation e-mail in your Outlook.com inbox. Open it and click on the confirmation link.
Now go back to the Forwarding tab in Gmail under settings. Refresh the page and select Forward a copy of incoming mail to your new Outlook.com address and the choose Save Changes.
I’m assuming you’d like your Gmail Contacts available in Outlook. Here’s how to link them. Click the drop-down arrow in the upper left.
Then choose your Google Contacts.
You’ll see the window below. Choose Connect. You will have to log into your Google account.
You’ll receive another confirmation e-mail in your Outlook.com inbox. Your contacts may take awhile to import.
Now on to getting your old Gmail messages imported into your Outlook.com account. Follow this link to go to Trueswitch.com. It still reads Hotmail on some of the instructions, but this will switch you to Outlook.com. Fill out the information for you Gmail and Outlook.com accounts.
Then you can choose to copy your email messages and address book and also send an e-mail informing your contacts of your new Outlook.com address if you choose.
You’ll get a confirmation screen. This process could take a day or so to finish. Your Gmail will appear in a new folder called GMAIL Mail and you should receive another confirmation e-mail.
I know it’s a long process, but you only have to do it once.
Hope this helps.
