How Do Scammers Know To Call Me?

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2014 by | Filed Under: Quick Tips

You wrote about scammers calling pretending to work for System Mechanic. How do these people know I have System Mechanic? Who gave them my phone number?

Rita, the scammers don’t know for sure that you have System Mechanic and likely no one gave them your number. They call hundreds of thousands of numbers randomly, hoping to hit on someone who has that product. It’s the same technique scammers pretending to work for Microsoft use. They have no way of knowing whether you have a Mac, Windows PC or an Android tablet. They just hope to hit someone with a Windows computer. Scammers also make calls impersonating other security software, so if someone calls your home saying they are from Norton, McAffe, Kaspersky, AVG or any other security service, don’t believe it. These companies DO NOT call you at home. You have to contact them.

This works much like the scammers that call and tell people their grandchildren are in trouble while on a trip and need money. Not everyone has grandchildren and most people won’t have a grandchild on a trip. But all they need to do is hit a few people for whom that scenario rings true.

As are most of your tips, I found this very useful. Very confirming as I’ve gotten several calls from “Microsoft” and ALMOST fell for the first one. Thank you again for great information in all of the emails I get from you Steve.

It’s just as an article at pointed out. Phone scammers don’t know what you got on your computer. They’re just guessing so don’t let that fool you. While most of us may find the scam call obvious right away, we should still report them to the proper authorities to get the scammers investigated.
