How Tech Is Changing Your Health Care

The medical industry relies on speed, efficiency, and quality service to ensure experts can both save and improve their patients’ lives. With this in mind, it’s clear that latching onto the IT craze of the modern generation is key to keeping up with modern health problems. As technology has evolved and improved, its influence within the healthcare system has done the same, and this has lead to results that not only improve patient experience but also impact a patient’s bank account.

Here are a few new technologies that have grown within your healthcare, and how IT’s influence is changing both your bank account and your quality of life.

 Improving Patient Experience

Managing and maintaining a hospital is possible only through many professionals and many divisions. When a patient enters with a health issue, the information that the nurses and doctors collect must run through a range of different hands before becoming valuable knowledge. Labs to assess the knowledge, previous health records to offer insights, and many more hoops to jump through are required before a doctor can make an educated decision on how to address patient care. In the case of long-term treatment, doctors must especially gain access to information from other hospitals and specialists before they can address the problem.

With so many databases, servers, and divisions to access, the process becomes slow, difficult, and often times inaccurate. To combat this issue, many hospitals and private practices are turning to a favorite tool of successful businesses – converged infrastructure. Rather than each division working on separate servers, which creates many barriers and slows a doctor’s ability to access data remotely, converged infrastructure collects everything into a single server. This makes the search much faster and more condensed. Now medical professionals can access information and big data solutions exactly when they need it, pharmacies can create prescriptions faster, and labs have the opportunity to both communicate and collect data in record time. This boost in speed and efficiency means the difference of minutes or even hours in response time, potentially saving lives.

Mobile Health – Combating IT Costs

Many patients are unsure about visiting their doctors due to lack of funds, lack of time, and other social reservations. However, technology has allowed for patients and doctors to bypass this issue altogether with the creation of mHealth, which is essentially an app that patients can use on their mobile devices. This equips them with the ability to communicate remotely with their doctor, receive a diagnosis or a private consultation, keep up-to-date with the hospital’s progress on their case from home or in their sickbed, and even gain more ready access to their prescriptions. This not only improves the patient experience, but also allows for hospitals to have fewer staff members, saving on costs.

IT’s growing role within healthcare presents a large price difference to both hospitals and patients. Since the technical industry is so vastly different from the medical industry, taking advantage of what it has to offer means hiring new professionals and buying new equipment, which can be very costly for older hospitals that struggle with the transition towards technology. This leads to a rise in healthcare costs for patients, but devices like mHealth allow many within the medical industry to balance out the difference, ensuring patients get the best without suffering a severe change in price.

Digitized Records – Reducing Healthcare Costs

Most hospitals, even in the modern age, still rely on paper records for keeping track of their patients’ personal information and health history. Yet with the advances in technology and IT’s influence, they can now digitize these records, accessing the information remotely and with greater speed. This improves the patient experience, yet also leads to a massive reduction in costs; hospitals can now store information with less space, eliminating entire archives and the expenses entailed in keeping them safe.

With the advantages it offers, IT’s influence in healthcare has only grown in recent years and will continue to do so. The impact of this relationship between industries certainly creates positive effects on patient experience and a doctor’s ability to provide quality, efficient, fast care, but the price differences also vary. For older hospitals who find the transition to newer technology more costly, patients will experience a rise in cost. However, for newer hospitals that have evolved with the change in technology, patients can enjoy a reduction in their healthcare prices to match an improvement in care.
