In the last year, many new features were added into Firefox. However, the feature we are going to discuss is sadly not present in Firefox in spite of all other popular browsers using this feature already. I am talking about speed-dial, and today we will see how to add it to Firefox.
What is Speed Dial?
Speed dial puts your favorite websites at your fingertip with your most visited websites in a neatly arranged display. It’s like bookmarks, but of websites you visit every day. This eliminates the need to remember websites or to type them, and serializes your work on the Internet. I have found speed dials of utmost usage on browsers like Chrome and Opera.
Today, we will see how to add a speed-dial to Firefox. After adding the speed dial, your Firefox will look like the image below.
How to get the speed-dial Firefox extension?
Step 1: Open Firefox browser, and go to the Firefox menu -> Add ons.
Step 2: Enter “Speed dial” in the search area as shown below.
Step 3: You will get a number of results for Speed dial. Look for the specific result marked in the image below. Click on the Install button beside it.
Step 4: Once the download finishes, you will have to restart your Firefox for the speed dial to appear. Click on the “restart now” link as shown.
Note: Make sure you have saved your work on all other tabs.
Step 5: Now, you will get a speed-dial screen whenever you open a new tab.
However, this is only the beginning. Going further, you have to add websites to your sped dial and configure the number of dials you want to see. Let us take a look at how we can use Speed Dial to our fullest advantage.
How to setup Speed Dial for Firefox?
Before using Speed dial, you have to come up with a strategy for placing websites. A random order is fine, but it does not increase your productivity as much as a well thought out order. In my case, the first row is reserved for Google products like Gmail, Google search and Google adsense. The second row is for my blogs, so I have all their login accounts on the second row. The third row is for content aggregators and news streams like Google News, Reddit, etc. there. The fourth row is for social networks like Facebook, Google+, Twitter etc. However, this is my strategy. Yours has to suite your browsing habit.
Step 1: To add a website to a speed dial, simply right click on an empty speed dial and click on Edit as shown below.
You will be presented with a window. Enter the website URL and the update period for the thumbnail as shown below.
Step 2: Now that you know how to add websites to the dial, we will also see how to increase the number of rows or columns in our speed dial display. On the left top corner, look for Group#1 as shown in this image below. Right click on it, and click on Edit Group.
Step 3: Enter speed-dial details as shown below. Change the number of rows and columns as you want.
Now that you have seen how to add speed dials, go ahead and experience a faster web-browsing.
