How To Auto Shutdown & Bootup your Mac

Tuesday, May 30th, 2017 by | Filed Under: Computer Terms, Mac OS

How wonderful would it be if you woke up in the morning and your Mac was already booted up and ready for you? Or if you walked into your home office and the machine was already switched on and ready for you to use?

It might sound lazy, but at times I feel too groggy to even open my eyes let alone press a button to turn on the Mac when I wake up. Given the fact that I do my early morning newspaper reading on the computer, it was a no-brainer for me to program my Mac to start on its own while I fetch the morning cup of joe. The best part is that it is so easy to do that you can do this in a matter of minutes too.

To schedule an auto wake up, we will need to access the Energy Saver section in the System Preferences window. Look for the yellow bulb icon or simply type ‘Energy’ into Spotlight search bar.

Once you are in there look for the ‘Schedule’ button in the bottom right corner and click on it. A window will open up give you two options. As you can guess, the top one is the option for auto starting your Mac, so check  the box and set a time that your Mac should ‘wake up’ at.

You can customize this further by enabling this setting for only weekdays or for a specific day of the week as well. Similarly, you can also schedule your Mac to shut down by itself at a particular time.

This can come handy in a variety of situations. For instance, say you are downloading a big file that will take an hour to download but you also need to step out of the house for a dinner. You can schedule the Mac to shut down by itself once the download is completed. You’ll need to allow plenty of time for the download to finish.

Similarly you can also schedule it to auto sleep or restart at a certain time. Now it is important to remember that auto start up works only when your Mac is connected to the power source, so make sure a power adapter is connected to your computer.
