How To Protect Your Android Phone

Smartphones have become an important part of our life and a useful tool to ease our work. Storing personal information on them, such as photos, emails, contacts, etc. has made them a target for hackers. But what can we do to protect our personal data and use our smartphones safely, without worrying about data theft? How can we make sure our social media accounts, synced files, emails, photos, important documents, and messages are kept safe?

Fortunately, there are a few ways we can protect our smartphones, and in this article, we will focus more on how to protect an Android device, be it a phone or a tablet.

Android Security

Most Android devices come with inbuilt security apps you can use. They offer different types of screen locks, such as password, pattern, pin, fingerprint unlock or even face unlock. You can activate any of these, from your Android device settings. When setting a password or a pin, try using a more complicated one, so it will be more difficult to be guessed by hackers or thieves.

Passwords

This rule applies to your computer as well. Never save important passwords on your device, such as payment or banking app passwords. Social media accounts and email accounts can be linked to your phone, but make sure you protect these as well. Some of them offer additional authentification steps. Also, in case of theft, you should change your passwords immediately.

App Permissions

Don’t install an app from Google Play before checking its list of permissions. This list will be prompted when you try to download the app. Some requested permissions are not even necessary, and in some cases, you can deselect those before installing an app.

Reading the app’s requested permissions is very important. To know what’s required and what’s not, think about what an app has to do. For example, a clock app doesn’t need to access your contacts. Keep in mind that not all apps in the Google Play store are safe.

Locking Apps

If you use some apps that hold private information about you, it is best to lock them. This adds another layer of protection, in case of a security breach. For this, you can use some free apps, or simply check your Android device’s settings, if it already offers this feature. Also, some payment apps have the fingerprint lock available. This adds some more protection, as you can only access them using your fingerprint.

Tomorrow, in part 2 of this article, we’ll look at more ways to keep your phone safe.
