IE 7 Tweak

Friday, May 25th, 2007 by | Filed Under: Using The Internet

IE 7 Tweak

With the launch of Internet Explorer 7, more and more users are now looking for other browser options. I mean, a lot of people still choose to stick with IE 7, but why is everyone looking for other choices? Well, there just so happens to be one problem that most of those users face when they’re looking for other browsers.

For some very strange reason, Microsoft allows you to only download two simultaneous files within Internet Explorer 7 at a time. So, if your best friend sent you an e-mail with 96 photos attached to it, you will have to download them two by two. That’s not a very good or convenient idea. Thankfully, other people faced with the same problem have found a tweak.

First, let me warn you that this tweak requires you to edit your Windows registry. This means that unless you are familiar with the registry and feel comfortable working with it, don’t fiddle around. Damaging the Windows registry is not a good idea at all. However, rest assured that if you follow the instructions below exactly, things should go fine. But I’m still warning you, so be careful!

Let’s start up the registry. Go to Start, Run and in the dialogue box that opens, type in “regedit,” without the quotes. Then press Enter. (Windows Vista users can simply click on Start and type in “regedit” in the search bar). Once the registry opens up, you will see a tree structure that may seem intimidating at first, but as long as you stay with me here, you’ll be fine.

As shown in the above screenshot, navigate to this section: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings.

Once there, right click in an empty space and create a new 32 bit DWord value by selecting New, DWord Value. When the new box opens, name it “MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server.”

Double click this entry and modify the value of this DWord to whatever you’d like the number of simultaneous downloads to be. For example, if you want to be able to download five files together, set the value at five. If you want it to be more, place it at a higher value.

Create another DWord like we did before and name it “MaxConnectionsPerServer.” Again, double click the DWord entry and modify the value to the same number that you put in the previous one above. In the last example, it was five, so go ahead and set this one to five as well.

That’s all we need to do with the registry editor. You can close it now. Then, if you have Internet Explorer open, simply restart it to see the changes take place. Now, remember, as long as you follow the instructions carefully, there won’t be any problems. You just have to navigate along the registry tree and create two new values.

This is a very easy way to increase the maximum downloads allowed by Microsoft in IE 7, which will help a lot of you who do heavy downloading. Now, an even easier way is to switch to another browser like Firefox or Opera, but if you are content with IE, this tweak will surely help you!
