Cloning the Ice Age.

Japanese researchers are launching a project to revive the extinct woolly mammoth, using cloning technology to bring it back in an estimated 5-6 year’s time. They will do this by using the tissue obtained from a mammoth carcass that has been preserved in a Russian research laboratory, the Yomiuri Shimbun (a mass-circulation daily) reported.

The team has invited a Russian mammoth researcher and two US elephant experts into the project and has already established a technique to extract DNA from frozen cells.

Researchers had once given up on cloning the mammoth after mammoth skin and muscle tissue were found damaged and proven unusable. Teruhiko Wakayama of the Riken Centre for Developmental Biology then succeeded in cloning a mouse from the cells of another that had been kept in deep-freeze for 16 years.

Akira Iritani, leader of the team and a professor emeritus of Kyoto University, said, “If a cloned embryo can be created, we need to discuss, before transplanting it into the womb, how to breed [the mammoth] and whether to display it to the public,” Iritani said. “After the mammoth is born, we will examine its ecology and genes to study why the species became extinct and other factors.”

Blow up your own pictures, inflate your own studio.

Yes, there are have been inflatable photo studios before this (I didn’t know that), but nothing like this one.

If you’re a photographer who needs more space to do your developing and want to (for whatever reason) do it outside, you might want to check out the Inflatable Photo Studio (I.P.S), created by New York City-based photographer Brian Hedenberg. The studio can be installed outside – even on a sidewalk (who does that?) in just minutes. The Inflatable Photo Studio is made from a thick black plastic material that is designed to block out sunlight, and it’s available in different sizes. The studio has two entrances, an air vent and can be folded into a 2′ x 2′ x 4′ box. Weighing in at 40 lbs., it’s easy to carry, as well. There are ventilation holes, so you can attach a fan to increase air circulation inside the booth.

Several words of caution from the makers of the I.P.S:

DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE INSIDE WHILE DEFLATING! It is recommended that in the event there is a power failure, you crawl on your hands and knees to the nearest exit. In the event of a rapid deflation is best to NOT PANIC, keep your arms up at an angle in front of you.

It is not recommended that you smoke, cook or have any open flames in the studio. Also lights can become very hot and melt the studio. Do not rest lighting or position it against the sides. Curling irons, hair driers, and steamers can also melt the plastic causing rapid deflation or possible fire.

That second warning pretty much bummed me out, because one thing I always do when I am developing photos is blow dry and curl my hair. Guess I am no-go on this one.

Speaking of photos…

If you’re a photo enthusiast, then you might want to check out this website.

The Ultimate PhotoGuide website (launched just this past week) is focused on providing educational tips and techniques for photography enthusiasts looking to get the most out of their digital SLR (single lens reflex). It expands upon the educational theme by providing additional free video content to digital SLR photographers’ biggest questions on how to catch the great photo. The Ultimate Photo Guide blends traditional print instruction with video-based instruction.

Website highlights include a free e-newsletter, product reviews, and a member forum to facilitate an exchange of ideas on photography topics. There is an extensive resource list, including manufacturers, galleries, and photography workshops.

Perhaps what makes this website unique among photography websites is the video instruction and content. The Ultimate PhotoGuide’s Digital Photography Series is a comprehensive DVD series of in-depth photography lessons demonstrated by professional photographers. The Ultimate PhotoGuide has appeal for all kinds of photography enthusiasts, ranging from beginners to pros.

This refreshing approach to a photo guide website is for new photographers and seasoned veterans to get great how-to video content to enhance their photography skills. If you are a photo enthusiast of any kind, then this one’s for you.

Have a safe week!

The inflatable studio is a studio, not a darkroom. Models would very probably want to do their hair in it.
