Amazon Raises Free Shipping Minimum
Amazon has hiked the minimum purchase to qualify for free shipping. The online retail giant previously offered free ground shipping inside the U.S. with most purchases over $25. The minimum purchase for free shipping has been raised to $35. That’s the first change in the policy in a decade.
Rising costs for fuel and shipping services have made shipping more expensive in recent years. In the last three months of 2012, Amazon spent nearly $1.8 billion on shipping.
Microsoft Slashes Price on First Generation Surface Pro
With the Surface Pro 2 on the market, Microsoft is slashing the price of the first generation Surface Pro to $699 for the 64 GB model and $799 for the 128 GB (which is $200 less than what I paid for my Surface Pro back in March. Serves me right for buying a first-generation model.)
If you want a tablet that’s also a fully functional PC, you might want to consider one. But check out the Surface Pro 2 first. It’s lighter and is available with more hard drive space.
Microsoft: Free iWorks software is “Lightweight”
Microsoft says it’s not at all worried that Apple will be giving it’s iWorks productivity software. Apple made the announcement when it unveiled it’s new line of iPads and announced that its latest version of the Mac operating system, OS X Mavericks would be free to all Mac users.
Microsoft VP Frank Shaw responded, “Since iWork has never gotten much traction, and was already priced like an afterthought, it’s hardly that surprising or significant a move. “So, when I see Apple drop the price of their struggling, lightweight productivity apps, I don’t see a shot across our bow, I see an attempt to play catch up.”
* Not to brag, but WorldStart still offers free shipping within the US on any purchase of $5 or more.
