Insects at the Smithsonian

Insects at the Smithsonian

When you think of the Smithsonian, insects usually don’t come to mind, do they? But, this is a great site to learn all about insects! It’s even easy to navigate.

All the sections are contained in the white block in the center of the page. Just click the orange links to visit each section. You can also click the image next to each description to visit that section. What are the sections, you ask? Well, I’m just about to tell you.

First up is the Smithsonian Institution Department of Entymology’s Web site. This is where you can learn all about the institution’s insect collection and about the research they are doing for it.

Next, you’ll notice the picture of the pretty little lady bug. This section is Bug Info. Here you can learn about bugs by species or you can learn about insects in general. I liked this section a lot.

The next section is a Highlighted Insect section. This time it’s devoted to the cicada. This section was fascinating. Did you know that cicadas live to be 13 or even 17 years old? I sure didn’t and that is just one of the tidbits of information you’ll find here as you learn about Brood X. (That’s Brood 10, not the letter X).

Do you have a hankering for a virtual tour? Well, you can find one in the next section. You can go on a brief virtual tour of the O. Orkin Insect Zoo. Here, you can learn about habitats (including our homes), ants, tarantulas and whole lot more. If you live near the O. Orkin Insect Zoo and want to visit, there is a downloadable teacher’s guide.

The next section is all about mosquitoes and how the collection is used for research by the government. This section is followed by another section on more insect research.

This site really teaches you all about bugs! Check it out!
