Install a Stubborn Windows Update

Monday, April 25th, 2011 by | Filed Under: Security Help

Susan from Providence RI asks:

I have a Windows Vista update (KB2446708) that has repeatedly failed to install. Can you help?

Actually Susan, the same thing happened to me, and we’re not alone. A quick search indicated that the problem with this particularly stubborn update is widespread. However, if you follow the steps below, you should be able to complete a successful installation. The first steps are included to demonstrate how to identify the update.

If you’d like to follow all the steps, including the update identification, begin by typing windows update into the Start menu search and click on the Windows Update link.

In the Windows Update window, click the View update history link on the left (or in the lower right).

As you can see below, there were 4 failed attempts to install this Microsoft .NET Framework 4 update on my computer.

Now that we know which one it is, the repair and installation process can begin. Open Programs and Features. This can be done several ways, but I prefer using the Run command. Hold the Windows key and tap the R key (Win+R) to open Run. Type (or copy and paste) the following, appwiz.cpl and hit the Enter key.

In the Programs and Features window, scroll down and right click the Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile link. Click the Uninstall/Change link.

In the dialog box that opens, click the Repair radio button and then click Next.

The repair process should take about 15 minutes. Once the repair is complete, return to Windows Update and click the Install Updates button.

Installation may take another 15-20 minutes, after which you should receive the following message.
