Instant Messaging on Your Cell Phone
Posted By On August 18, 2006 @ 3:25 PM In Uncategorized | No Comments
Is there any way I can use an instant messenger while on my cell phone? If so, how?
That’s a very good question, because instant messaging with cell phones is one of the most popular up and coming trends of 2006. Just in case any of you aren’t sure, an instant messenger is a program designed for chatting between two or more people.
The most common instant messengers today are:
AIM from AOL and Yahoo! Messenger.
You just have to sign up for the program, create your own screenname, add your friends to your list and just start chatting away! It’s a really fun and easy way to talk to people that you might not get to see very often.
So, now back to the original question. Yes, you are able to chat with your cell phone. If your cell phone has the proper software for instant messaging and you have text messaging enabled, you can use your number keypad to type out words. You have to sign on to your account from your phone just like you would sign on from your computer and as long as another person is signed on from their computer, you can chat.
On the other hand, you can also be signed on from your computer and receive messages from another person using their cell phone. It works both ways and it’s very convenient for all those times you need to talk to someone, but aren’t home by your computer at the time. It’s also nice when you’re in a place where you can’t really talk on your phone. Just start texting and still get your communication across.
Now, how does all of this work? Well, as I said earlier, you need to have text messaging enabled on your cell phone, as well as, AIM or Yahoo! compatible software. Only certain phones have the appropriate equipment, so you can just ask for this when you buy a new cell phone or you can go to your cell phone store and ask for an upgrade. (If it’s possible for the type of phone you have). For an example, I’m going to use AIM, but most everything else is similar for Yahoo! Messenger and other instant messengers that you may use.
Once you have your screenname and your buddy list (all your friends who use AIM as well) all set up, you just have to sign on to AIM from your phone. The first time you do it, a new mobile device group will be added to your phone to create your buddy list. The first 30 people on your buddy list from your computer will be transferred to your phone. You can later add and delete your buddies depending on who you want to talk to at the time. You just have to know your friends’ screennames to add them to your phone.
When you sign on, you will show up as a “mobile user” to your friends using their computers, so they will know you’re on your cell phone and not your PC. When you see someone you want to talk to, you just basically send a text message to them from the AIM service and they will get it on their computer. They can then type back to you from their PC and you will receive it as a text message on your phone. Pretty cool, huh?!
That’s pretty much all there is to it. As long as you know how to text on your cell phone, you can use this service from any location and take your friends with you everywhere you go!
