Invasive Species
Welcome to Invasive Species, a website about “species that are (1) non-native (or alien) to the ecosystem under consideration and (2) whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health.”
Invasive species can be plants, animals, and other organisms (e.g., microbes). Human actions are the primary means of invasive species introductions.
Through this site you can find out what invasive species are in your area. Read specific profiles on these species and find out how they are effecting the environment. To browse by Species, please go to “Species Profiles”, to browse by location go to “Geographic Information”.
There are also tons of resources, databases and statistics. Here is an example of an invasive species:
Whirling Disease — This is a disease found in trout. It is almost always fatal and is caused by a parasite. It is highly infectious and spreads easily. This has caused a decline in Rocky Mountain area trout. Symptoms are skeletal deformities and black tail. Some trout exhibit a whirling motion while they swim.
