Is Microsoft Dumping Me?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016 by | Filed Under: Security Help, Windows 10, Windows 8

I got a very panicked e-mail from a reader who’d received this bit of information in a newsletter he subscribes to.

He wrote:  IS THIS TRUE THAT MICROSOFT WILL STOP SUPPORTING THESE WINDOWS AND Will Microsoft stop supporting window 8.1, and will I be safe to keep window 8.1.  Did not  understand this e-mail at all. Can you explain it better? If I keep Window 8.1 , will I keep getting support or not get support  from then?  Can you help explain this better to me please?

First of all, time to take a deep breath. As I told you in an article a couple weeks back, Microsoft is ending support for Windows 8 and requiring Windows 8 users to take the free upgrade to 8.1.  Much in the way Windows 7 users, need to have installed Service Pack 1 to receive support.

But if you read the e-mail closely, it doesn’t say Microsoft is ending support for Windows 7 and 8.1. It says that the latest generation of CPUs won’t work with these operating systems. That means that the very latest chips that are being built are designed to function with Windows 10. That makes sense, when yo build a new product, you build it for the latest operating system. But this had no effect on your PC.

If you click through to the article the newsletter links to, you’ll see that it’s clearly about new products and aimed a little more at businesses than the home user.

In the article, it even features a quote from a Microsoft VP assuring users that existing chips would continue to be supported for 7 and 8.1, but that he latest models would be for Windows 10.

You can expect several more years of support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.  Microsoft provides security support for 10 years from the time of release. That mean Windows 7 will be supported until 2020 and Windows 8.1 until 2023.

Before you get too excited about anything, it’s always important to read it carefully and also do a little research. Headlines are meant to be provocative. Don’t assume that the headline is the whole story. They don’t call it clickbait for nothing.
